NMC Prepares for Potential Government Shutdown

The U.S. National Maritime Center issued a notice giving precautionary information due to the potential Government shutdown. If the government shutdown occurs, the National Maritime Center (NMC) is authorized to maintain a very small cadre of personnel to support National Security emergent issues. •Push notification via the Website and List Server. •Maintain the Customer Service Call Center. 888-IASKNMC will be open and monitoredfrom 0800 until 2000 Eastern Time Monday through Friday. REC and NMC phones will not be monitored. •Maintain the website. We will attempt to keep the industry up to date on our status via the website. •Regional Exam Centers will be closed. oExam Appointments will be cancelled and must be rescheduled after the shutdown is lifted. Online scheduling will be disabled.

Coast Guard's NMC Reaches Out on Server Problems

Mariner Credentialing Program List Server Issues. Recently the National Maritime Center (NMC) experienced some technical difficulties with the Mariner Credentialing Programs (MCP) information List Server service. Our recent consolidation and simplification to the lists required changes to control settings, some of which inadvertently left the Mariner Credentialing Program Information list open allowing all list serve members to post. Currently all three List Server categories are back on line having been assured the control setting issue has been resolved and tested.

CG to Reduce Credentialing Process Time

The U.S. Coast Guard announced ongoing actions to reduce processing time for mariner credentials. The National Maritime Center, the Coast Guard's new centralized mariner credentialing processing facility in Martinsburg, W.Va., consolidated the Mariner Licensing and Documentation program that was performed in the 17 Regional Examination Centers throughout the nation approximately one year ago. The NMC receives mariners applications and conducts detailed evaluations to ensure the mariners' meet applicable requirements for the credentials sought. All mariners are evaluated in three areas including a professional qualification evaluation, a safety and security evaluation, and a medical evaluation.

Navy Reserve Launches Next Phase of Forcewide Communication

Communicating with more than 100,000 Navy reservists and other key constituents worldwide has been a daunting task over the years. However, the commander of Navy Reserve Forces Command (CNRFC), launched 21st century technology June 25 to solve an age-old challenge. Reservists and others interested in the Navy Reserve Force can sign up for CNRFC’s list server for reserve-related information via e-mail. The list server, a computer server designed to automatically manage mailing lists with thousands of subscribers, will replace the current force e-mail distribution list (FEDL), which currently uses large distribution lists in the Microsoft Outlook program to send information to 8,000 recipients. People can subscribe for up to 13 e-mail groups at https://listserv.navyreserve.navy.mil.
