Holland America Line Named 'Marine Environmental Business of the Year'
Holland America Line was named the 2014 Marine Environmental Business of the Year by the Port of Seattle. Port commissioner Courtney Gregoire presented the award to Keith Taylor, senior vice president, fleet operations, at the Seattle Propeller Club’s Maritime Festival Lunch held Tuesday, May 13, 2014, aboard Carnival Miracle, which was docked at Port of Seattle. The cruise line was recognized for its efforts to reduce its global environmental footprint through a series of objectives that greatly reduce consumption of fuel and water, engine emissions and generation of solid waste, along with increasing recycling across its fleet of 15 ships.
Data Science Researcher Joins Marinexplore as New VP
Marinexplore, the ocean’s big data platform, today announced that Dr. Christopher W. Clark, Director of the Bioacoustic Research Program at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, will join the Silicon Valley company as Vice President of Acoustic Data & Environmental Science. Cruise Line to Promote Ocean Conservation On Board
In collaboration with the Marine Conservation Institute – a national and globally focused nonprofit organization based in Washington State dedicated to maintaining healthy, living oceans – Holland America Line will debut an in-stateroom video series onboard all its 15 cruise ships highlighting the importance of ocean conservation. Titled "Our Marvelous Oceans," the series was developed to educate Holland America Line guests on important marine conservation issues and feature topics that relate to the oceans around them. The first video in the series introduces these important subjects and the partnership between the Marine Conservation Institute and Holland America Line.
Coral Reef Research – New Program for Educators
Tempe Arizona based high-school teacher Mike Trimble became the first CREW (Coral Reef Educator on the Water) member of the Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation Global Reef Expedition. From March 25th-30th he joined the Foundation's research ship the M/Y Golden Shadow and a team of international scientists as they conducted coral reef research round Navassa Island in the Caribbean. The launch of the CREW project is a milestone in the Foundation's education program and future CREW members will participate in upcoming research missions.
Study on Cruise Ships' Waste Will Continue
According to the PI Reporter, work will continue on a study of whether it is feasible and desirable for the 150 Alaska-bound cruise ships that visit Seattle's waterfront every summer to pump their wastewater ashore rather than dumping it in the ocean. The study is being undertaken by the county's wastewater division and the Port of Seattle in light of the new $60 million cruise terminal being developed by the port at Terminal 91 in Interbay. The new terminal is set to debut in April 2008. A separate project to expand its capacity for handling storm water and sewage at Interbay could be outfitted to transmit the summer cruise waste to Magnolia's West Point Treatment Plant.
