GE Gas Turbines for Japan’s JS Asahi Destroyer

Two GE LM2500 marine gas turbines power the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Forces (JMSDF) newest destroyer JS Asahi (DD119). This first of two new destroyers in the JMSDF’s Asahi-class destroyer program was recently commissioned by the JMSDF. The ship was built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) at its Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works in Japan. “We work in concert with IHI, our longstanding partner in Japan, to supply LM2500 marine gas turbines to the JMSDF for this new destroyer and other surface combatant programs,” said GE’s Brien Bolsinger, Vice President, Marine Operations.

RJE to Build GE Gas Turbine Modules for Australian Navy Frigates

GE’s Marine Solutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with RJE Global, Morphettville, South Australia, whereby RJE will assemble GE LM2500 gas turbine modules and manufacture a number of components for this engine in support of the Royal Australian Navy’s new SEA 5000 frigate program. The MOU was signed by both companies recently at RJE’s facility in Adelaide. The nine-ship SEA 5000 Future Frigate Program will replace the aging Anzac class frigates. GE’s LM2500 gas turbines are operational on two of the short-listed qualified ship designs -- Fincantieri’s FREMM and Navantia’s F100.

GE Propulsion Onboard German Navy’s New Frigate

The German Navy’s fourth and final new F125 frigate Rheinland-Pfalz was christened during a ceremony held at the ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems shipyard in Hamburg on May 24. This surface combatant uses a GE LM2500 gas turbine-based propulsion system. Several Milestones on US Navy, Coast Guard Builds

GE’s Marine Solutions noted that several milestones were recently marked on U.S. Navy and Coast Guard surface combatant programs that all use GE’s LM2500 aeroderivative marine gas turbines. On December 23, 2016, the U.S. Navy accepted delivery of the fifth Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), the future USS Gabrielle Giffords. GE will provide 20 LM2500 gas turbines for the Austal USA LCS program, part of a contract for up to 10 ships to be built by Austal USA. The two LM2500s are arranged in a Combined Diesel And Gas turbine (CODAG) configuration with two diesel engines.

Engine Startup Aboard New Aussie Destroyer

The gas turbines aboard the Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN) new air warfare destroyer (AWD) Hobart have been commissioned. “This is a huge achievement for the project that everyone should be proud of,” said Michael Clements, Test and Activation (T&A) Manager. In preparation for the engines’ commissioning, a production team undertook the load-out of the gas turbine engines onto the ship, followed by integration, alignment, cable and pipe testing and flushing of the supporting systems.

LM2500 Gas Turbine Powers Turkish Navy's MILGEM Corvette

GE’s Marine Solutions announced that the Turkish Navy’s third MILGEM multi-purpose corvette TCG Burgazada was launched powered by a GE LM2500 gas turbine-based propulsion system. The launch ceremony was held in mid-June at the Istanbul Naval Shipyard; a keel laying ceremony was also held for sister MILGEM ship TCG Kınalıada. The propulsion system for TCG Burgazada (F-513) is the same as sisters TCG Heybeliada (F-511) and TCG Büyükada (F-512), consisting of an LM2500 gas turbine in a combined diesel and gas turbine configuration with two diesel engines. Total propulsion power is 31,000 kilowatts, allowing the ships to reach maximum speed in excess of 29 knots. The corvettes have an overall length of 99 meters with a displacement of 2,300 tons.

The German Navy's third F125-class frigate Sachsen-Anhalt was christened in March during a ceremony held at ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems shipyard in Hamburg. Australian Navy Commissions HMAS Adelaide

GE Marine reports that its LM2500 gas turbines now power the Royal Australian Navy’s HMAS Adelaide which was commissioned in late 2015. Alongside sister HMAS Canberra, these 230-meter-long Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) ships are the largest vessels ever built for the RAN. According to the RAN, HMAS Adelaide was designed with the shallowest possible draft and can deploy an embarked force of more than 1,000 personnel and their equipment, landing ashore via landing craft or helicopters.

The U.S. Navy has recently commissioned and launched two Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) of the Independence-variant, both of which are powered by two GE LM2500 marine gas turbines, GE Marine reports. The USS Jackson was commissioned on December 5 in a ceremony in Gulfport, Miss., following the launch of sister ship LCS USS Omaha in late November, also in Gulfport. Furthermore, according to shipbuilder Austal USA, the future USS Montgomery also is preparing for acceptance sea trials in early 2016.

GE Gas Turbines to Power Turkish Corvettes

GE Marine announced it has signed a contract with Savunma Teknolojileri Mühendislik Ve Ticaret A.Ş. (STM), Ankara, Turkey, whereby GE will provide STM with LM2500 gas turbines. The engines will power the Turkish Navy’s third and fourth MILGEM multi-purpose corvettes, GE reported today during the IDEF ’15 industry trade show. STM is the program manager for these new two ships, and will provide platform systems, construction materials, design services and the main propulsion systems, as well as integration of the propulsion system.

GE Contracted to Service Australian Navy Frigates

GE has signed an in-service support contract with the Australian Defense Materiel Organization’s Maritime Cross-Platform Systems Program Office. Under the contract, GE will provide maintenance and logistic support services for the Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN) GE LM2500 aeroderivative marine gas turbines that power Adelaide- and ANZAC-class frigates. Littoral Combat Ship USS Coronado (LCS 4) was commissioned by the United States Navy on April 5 at its home port of San Diego, California. GE Marine reports that the German Navy’s Baden-Württemberg(F125-class) frigatewas christened in December 2013, powered by a GE LM2500 gas turbine-based propulsion system. The christening ceremony was held at ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems in Hamburg, Germany. According Dr. MTU Friedrichshafen, a GE Marine System Supplier, provided the ship’s propulsion module, which includes one LM2500 gas turbine, two electric motors and four diesel generator-sets in a combined diesel-electric and gas turbine (CODLAG) propulsion arrangement.

GE to Retrofit Gas Turbines on Eight U.S. Navy Vessels

GE Marine reported that the United States Navy has ordered eight Digital Fuel Control (DFC) kits for LM2500 marine aeroderivative gas turbines. The DFC kits provide for improved gas turbine reliability and maintainability, yielding lower maintenance and reduced long term costs. The eight LM2500s, to be retrofitted, will power U.S. Navy DDG Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. The DFC kits incorporate the most state-of-the-art controls available for GE LM gas turbines – a technology now standard on new LM2500, LM2500+ and LM2500+G4 engines.

GE Supplies Turbines for Two U.S. Navy Destroyers

GE Marine reports that it will provide eight LM2500 marine gas turbines to power the United States Navy’s DDG 117 and DDG 118 destroyers, to be named USS Paul Ignatius and USS Daniel Inouye respectively. Each of the LM2500s will feature engine improvements made through GE’s common engine program, including parts upgrade of the compressor rotor, the turbine mid-frame, the compressor rear frame and the power turbine. GE Marine said it will provide Austal USA, Mobile, Ala., with four LM2500 marine aeroderivative gas turbines to power the United States Navy’s 14th and 16th Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ships (LCS). GE is providing 20 LM2500 gas turbines for the Austal USA LCS program, part of a contract for up to 10 ships over a five-year period. The Austal-built LCSs are powered by two LM2500s arranged in a combined diesel or gas turbine configuration with two diesel engines. According to Austal, Coronado (LCS 4) will complete sea trials later this spring.

GE to Provide MTU with LM2500 Gas Turbine

GE Marine reports that it will provide MTU Friedrichshafen, Friedrichshafen, Germany, with one LM2500 gas turbine for the German Navy’s fourth Baden-Württemberg-class (F125) frigate. For each new F125 frigate, MTU will provide the German Navy with one LM2500 gas turbine, two electric motors and four diesel generator-sets in combined diesel-electric and gas turbine propulsion arrangement. The keel for the first F125 frigate was laid in November 2011 at the Blohm +Voss shipyard in Hamburg.

GE to Provide IHI with LM2500 and LM500 Gas Turbines

GE Marine announced that it will provide IHI, Tokyo, Japan, with LM2500 and LM500 gas turbines for the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force’s (JMSDF) new 24DDH destroyer. The GE LM2500 gas turbines will be equipped with integrated electronic controls. “GE gas turbines already are part of the JMSDF’s 22DDH program. GE’s Bolsinger Participates on Expert Panel

GE Marine’s General Manager, Brien Bolsinger, participated in a panel during the United States Navy League’s Sea Air Space industry exposition held recently in National Harbor, Maryland. Bolsinger discussed how GE’s LM aeroderivative gas turbines can help the United States Navy keep ship power costs effective, while employing modern technologies. During the panel session, Obsolescence: From Design to Modernization* held on April 17, Bolsinger indicated he believes the U.S. Select equipment with total ownership cost (TOC) weighted more heavily than acquisition price.

GE Marine delivered eight LM2500 aeroderivative marine gas turbines that will power the United States Navy’s DDG 113 and DDG 115 destroyers, in the DDG 51 restart program. Commencing with this program, the U.S. Navy has adopted GE’s recommended LM2500 common engine initiative. “The U.S. Navy’s adoption of the LM2500 common engine program allows GE to leverage the LM2500 industrial volume to control cost, and improve manufacturing and durability, as well as spare parts lead times, in support of U.S. Navy fleet,” said Brien Bolsinger, GE Marine general manager.

GE Marine announces it has delivered two LM2500 marine aeroderivative gas turbines to Austal USA’s Mobile, Alabama, shipyard. These units will power the United States Navy’s Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship Jackson (LCS 6). GE will provide 20 LM2500 gas turbines for the Austal USA LCS program, part of a contract for up to 10 ships over a five-year period. Similar to the previous two Austal-built LCS Independence and Coronado, Jackson will be powered by two LM2500s arranged in a CODAG configuration with two diesel engines.

GE Marine reports it has delivered two LM2500 aeroderivative gas turbines to ASC in Adelaide, Australia. The LM2500s will power the Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN) third Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD). ASC, the AWD project shipbuilder within the AWD Alliance, is constructing all three Hobart-class AWDs. Each ship features two LM2500s configured in a CODOG arrangement with two diesel engines. The RAN’s new destroyers are based on the design developed and used by Navantia of Spain for the Spanish Navy’s F100 frigate program.
