Tanker Aids Ailing Boater Off Louisiana

Injured Tug Captain Medevaced Near Key West

The U.S. Coast Guard medevaced the captain from the tugboat, Capt. Beau, after he reportedly sustained a fall near Long Key, Fla., Wednesday.Coast Guard Sector Key West watchstanders launched a Coast Guard Station Marathon 33-foot Special Purpose Craft—Law Enforcement boat crew who embarked the captain and transferred him to local emergency medical services at Conch Key Marina. The 52-year-old patient was taken to Fisherman's Hospital.Watchstanders received a medevac request from the Capt. Beau crew stating the captain of the vessel fell and sustained an injury.

Bulker Catches Fire on the Detroit River

A fire broke out in the engine room of a lake freighter on the Detroit River on Sunday afternoon, the US Coast Guard reported.A contracted firefighting team boarded the 641-foot Canadian bulk carrier Tecumseh and extinguished the fire overnight after all 16 crewmembers were safely disembarked and evaluated by local emergency medical services, the Coast Guard said.Vessel traffic has not been impacted and no pollution has been reported in the area.The 1970s-built vessel, which had been on the US side of the Detroit River near Zug Island at the southern city limits of Detroit when the fire occurred, is currently anchored by Windsor, Ontario…

Improper Crane Use Caused Crew Death -USCG

Inadequate training and improper shoreside crane operations were found to be the cause of a fatal accident earlier this year in the US Coast Guard buoy yard in Homer, Alaska.A shoreside crane mishap on January 31 lead to the death of Chief Warrant Officer Michael Kozloski, who was working in the buoy yard at the time of the accident. Crane Accident Kills USCG Member in Alaska

A Coast Guard member assigned to the Coast Guard Cutter Hickory (WLB-212) died following an accident at the Coast Guard buoy yard in Homer, Alaska, last Thursday.Deceased is Chief Warrant Officer, Michael Kozloski, 35-year-old male, from Mahopac, New York.According to the Coast Guard, Kozloski was injured while working in the buoy yard when a crane accident occurred. Local emergency medical services personnel performed CPR and transported him to South Peninsula Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.“It’s with great sadness that we announce the passing of a devoted shipmate, husband and father following this tragic accident,” said Rear Adm. Matthew T. Bell Jr., Coast Guard 17th District commander.

USCG Medevacs Elderly Cruise Ship Passenger

The U.S. Coast Guard medevaced an 81-year-old man from the cruise ship, Norwegian Getaway, Monday approximately 44 miles southeast of Marathon, Fla. The crew of the Norwegian Getaway notified Coast Guard 7th District watchstanders at approximately 11:50 p.m. Sunday of an 81-year-old man aboard the cruise ship suffering from heart attack-like symptoms. Watchstanders directed the launch of a Coast Guard Station Key West 45-foot Response Boat—Medium crew who arrived on scene, embarked the individual and transferred him ashore to awaiting local emergency medical services. He has since been transferred to Lower Keys Medical Center.

Crewman Medevaced from Tanker near Key West

The U.S. Coast Guard said it has medevaced a 40-year-old man suffering seizure-like symptoms from the motor tanker Oreon Voyager Tuesday approximately 26 miles south of Key West, Fla. Coast Guard Sector Key West watchstanders received a medevac request from the U.S. flagged tanker at approximately 1:25 p.m. Coast Guard 7th District Watchstanders launched an Air Station Miami MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew who arrived on scene at approximately 3 p.m. The man was transferred to local emergency medical services at approximately 3:30 pm. He has since been transferred to Lower Keys Medical Center.

Tug Crewman Medevaced off Key West

The U.S. Coast Guard said it has medevaced a 23-year-old man with vision complications from the tug Tiny Pyne Sunday approximately 9 miles south of Key West, Fla. Coast Guard Sector Key West watchstanders received a report of the injury at approximately 1:50 p.m. Sunday. Watchstanders launched a Station Key West 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew and embarked the patient at approximately 2:50 p.m. The man was transferred to local emergency medical services at approximately 3:20 p.m.

USCG Assists in Delaware Aircraft Emergency

The Coast Guard assisted a pilot involved in an aircraft emergency in Georgetown, Delaware, today. A Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew was returning from routine training with members of Coast Guard Station Crisfield, Maryland, when crews heard an aircraft emergency broadcast on the radio. The helicopter crew diverted to respond to the incident at Delaware Coastal Airport, where they came upon an airplane that was on fire, at about 3 p.m. Once on-scene a Coast Guard rescue swimmer and flight mechanic provided emergency assistance to the injured pilot until local Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived. “Unique cases like this illustrate the well rounded nature of our rescue personnel,” said Lt. Clint Lemasters, pilot at Air Station Atlantic City.

Man Rescued Off Rhode Island Coast

The Coast Guard and Jamestown Police Department rescued a 60-year-old man Sunday off Fort Wetherill, Rhode Island after he fell off his sailboat. At approximately 12:20 a.m., Coast Guard Station Castle Hill received a call from Jamestown Police reporting a man in the water who had been clinging to his boat for about two hours. A police officer was on the scene in his kayak, but could not get the man to safety. During the rescue attempt, the police officer fell from his kayak, and it was lost under the sailboat. A 45-foot response boat crew launched from the station and arrived on scene. It was dark and visibility was poor, so the crew deployed one mk 127 flare to illuminate the area.

Man Rescued near Grays Harbor, WA

A Coast Guard Station Grays Harbor crew aboard a 29-foot Response Boat-Small II rescued a man who was swept out to sea while wading in the water near the Grays Harbor north jetty at Ocean Shores, Washington, Sunday. The man, in his early twenties, who drifted approximately 300 yards past the tip of the jetty, was rescued from the water by the small boat crew, treated for hypothermia, and taken back to Station Grays Harbor where he was met by local emergency medical services for further medical care. Watch standers at Coast Guard Sector Columbia River received the call from personnel at Grays Harbor County 911 dispatch about the man in the water without a life jacket, who was reported as being swept away  from the jetty and calling for help.

Distressed Surfer Rescued near Cape Kiwanda, Ore

A Coast Guard Air Station North Bend MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew rescued a surfer in distress 150 yards offshore near Cape Kiwanda, Saturday. The surfer was safely transferred to local emergency medical services at the Pacific City Airport for further medical care. Watchstanders at the Sector Columbia River Command Center received the report of the surfer in distress via Tillamook County 911 dispatch. The Dolphin crew, who were already airborne on a training mission from Newport, were diverted, quickly located the surfer and hoisted him to safety. “This case illustrates the importance of unit and interagency relationships,” said Chief Petty Officer Justin Urbano, Command Duty Officer at Sector Columbia River.

USCG Conducts Medevac

The Coast Guard medically evacuated a 69-year-old-female Sunday 56 miles south of Nantucket. Watchstanders at the Coast Guard’s 1st District command center received a call from the cruise ship Norwegian Gem requesting a medevac of a 69-year-old woman suffering from possible internal injuries at approximately 9 a.m. Sunday. An Air Station Cape Cod MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew launched shortly before 10 a.m. and arrived on scene at approximately 11 a.m at which time they hoisted the woman from the deck of the vessel. The Jayhawk crew brought the woman to Barnstable Municipal Airport at around noon where she was transferred to local Emergency Medical Services personnel. EMS was expected to transport the woman to Cape Cod Hospital.

USCG Medevac Man from Sailboat on Lake Huron

U.S. Coast Guard crews conducted a MEDEVAC of a 74-year-old man from a 35-foot sailboat involved in the Bell's Beer Bayview Mackinac Race early Sunday morning on northern Lake Huron. The man's name is not being released by the Coast Guard and there is no video or imagery available for this case. Just before 6:30 a.m., the crew of Coast Guard Cutter Alder, homeported in Duluth, Minnesota, and deployed to assist with the race, was contacted by the sailboat stating that a crew member had lost consciousness for approximately three minutes and had a history of heart issues. Alder diverted to assist and it was determined by the on-call Coast Guard flight surgeon that a MEDEVAC was necessary.

USCG Rescues 2 Boaters Near Willapa Bay, Wash.

A Coast Guard Air Station Astoria MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew rescued two stranded boaters near Willapa Bay, Wash., Saturday. The 67-year-old man and 57-year-old woman were safely transported to an airfield in Raymond, Wash., where they were met by local emergency medical services for evaluation. Watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Columbia River command center received the call for assistance via Pacific County Dispatch late Saturday night after the boaters reported their 12-foot aluminum skiff was aground on a mud flat. The two individuals became stuck in the mud after leaving their vessel to attempt to walk to shore prompting another 911 call. The command center watchstanders dispatched the Jayhawk crew to respond.

Is This a Record? 93-Year-Old Medevaced From Cruise Ship

The U.S. Coast Guard inform of the medical evacuation of an injured  93-year-old male passenger (with his wife) from the cruise ship 'Grandeur of the Seas' in the Lower Chesapeake Bay. Grandeur of the Seas contacted Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads Command Center watchstanders via VHF-FM to request medical assistance for the elderly passenger who had suffered a head injury. Ailing Tug Crewmember Medaveced near Alaska

A U.S. Coast Guard Station Ketchikan 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew medevaced a diabetic 59-year-old male suffering from seizure like symptoms aboard the tug vessel Pacific Ocean, near Ketchikan, Alaska Tuesday evening. The Coast Guard crew rendezvoused with the 117-foot tug vessel 19 miles south of Ketchikan, safely brought the man aboard and transferred him to local emergency medical services in Ketchikan for further medical care. Coast Guard Sector Juneau watchstanders received the request for medevac from the master of the tug vessel. The duty flight surgeon was contacted and concurred with the need for the medevac. “This case illustrates the preparedness of our small boat station crewmembers,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Matthew Powers, a watchstander at Sector Juneau.

Update: Bald Head Island Ferry Salvage

The U.S. Coast Guard is monitoring salvage attempts Wednesday of the Bald Head Island Ferry Adventure, which ran aground Tuesday in the vicinity of Battery Island near Southport, N.C. Personnel from Bald Head Island Transportation attempted to refloat the Adventure at approximately 10:30 a.m. Wednesday during high tide without success. The owner of Bald Head Island Transportation is working to submit a salvage plan of the Adventure for Coast Guard approval before any additional action is taken.

Response Boat Evacuates Casualty From 1,000-ft Laker

The Coast Guard has conducted an emergency medical evacuation of a sick crewmember from the 1,000-foot laker 'Edwin H. Gott' operating approximately 40 miles northwest of Bayfield, Wis. in Lake Superior. The laker reported that a crewmember aboard was experiencing symptoms of a stroke and the captain later  reported that the 60-year-old man's medical condition had been deteriorating rapidly throughout the early morning. SAR coordinators at Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste Marie, Mich., immediately directed the launch of a boatcrew from Station Bayfield, Wis., aboard a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium.

USCG Medevacs Man from Bulk Carrier off Va. Coast

The Coast Guard medevaced a 46-year-old man Monday from a 968-foot bulk carrier while the ship was anchored near Cape Charles. The ship's agent of the KM Osaka contacted Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads watchstanders at approximately 6:45 p.m. reporting a man broke his arm and requested a medevac. Sector Hampton Roads watchstanders diverted a crew aboard a 45-foot Response Boat - Medium from Coast Guard Station Cape Charles to assist. Natural Gas Leak on Supply Vessel in Gulf

Houma Incident Command received a report of an incident that occurred at about 9:25 a.m. Friday, June 11, involving a supply vessel that was mooring to a natural gas riser platform and pipeline in waters near Cocodrie, resulting in a release of natural gas. Of the 41 people on board, 36 were transported to shore, treated by emergency medical services and taken to five local hospitals. Symptoms ranged from scratchy throats to coughs and nausea. Of those 36 people, two were characterized as more serious, complaining of shortness of breath, disorientation and chest pains. One of those two was airlifted to a local hospital for emergency care. Five crew members are still on the vessel and moving it to a safe mooring, where they will be evaluated by local emergency medical services.

Staten Island Ferry Strikes St. George Terminal

A team of Coast Guard investigators and inspectors was on scene at the Staten Island Ferry terminal after a ferry struck the pier around 9:30 a.m. on May 8. The ferry boat Andrew J. Barberi reportedly lost propulsion and struck the pier, resulting in serious damage to the facility's ramps and the main decks of the boat above the waterline. There were 252 passengers and 18 crew members onboard at the time of incident. There have been reports of minor injuries. There have been no reports of pollution. A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station New York was also on scene after the incident. The New York Port Authority prepared to move the ferry to a different slip while the investigation is being conducted.
