CMA CGM, a world leader in maritime transport, is to take a long-term lease and invest in a build-to-suit, multi-temperature warehouse facility at DP World London Gateway Logistics Park. The CMA CGM Group will occupy, through its international freight forwarding and logistics solutions subsidiary, a one hectare cold store facility within a 2.4 hectare logistics plot development on the River Thames and located close to main road access into the London area. This state-of-the-art facility, fitted with IT traceability and management systems, represents a major milestone for the CMA CGM Group’s strategy to develop a global range of products in maritime transportation but also in inland solutions and logistics.

A new off-dock empty container storage yard is to be opened at DP World London Gateway Port. The five acre yard will be operated and managed by Solent Stevedores, an award-winning stevedoring company with a broad range of bulk and general cargo handling and storage services at ports in Southampton, Jersey, Immingham and London. The facility will be located on Berth 7, outside of the terminal’s ISPS perimeter but adjacent to the port’s main gate. A number of associated container services will also be offered by Solent Stevedores from the site. Work to develop the yard will commence next month, with it then due to become operational by the first quarter of 2018.

CMA CGM’s European Caribbean Service is to begin calling at DP World London Gateway Port following enhancements to the rotation. It means that this particular service will be calling in the UK for the first time on Friday, January 6. Dedicated to reefer transport, the service will provide one of the shortest transit times on the market between Central America and North Europe. It also enables the UK to connect with the whole of the Caribbean region through CMA CGM’s strategic hub in Kingston, Jamaica. The new ECS rotation will be: Puerto Limon, Kingston, Rotterdam, DP World London Gateway, Hamburg, Antwerp, Le Havre, Caucedo, Kingston, Santo Tomas de Castilla, Puerto Cortes and Puerto Limon.

DP World London Gateway Port has announced a new shipping service to Australia, the Mediterranean and other key markets. CMA-CGM’s NEMO (North European Mediterranean Oceania) and Hapag Lloyd’s EAX (Europe, Australia Express) combined service will begin calling at DP World London Gateway Port in early January 2017, with CMA CGM’s Rossini as the first to call on the service. The new business will mean DP World London Gateway is handling all of the UK’s direct services to Australia. In addition to four port calls at cities in Australia, the service will provide the Port with more direct links between Singapore, Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Malta and Italy.

Enormous quay cranes, which arrived at DP World London Gateway on Wednesday morning, will enhance U.K. Two more of the U.K.’s most technically advanced quay cranes were brought up the River Thames on Wednesday, completing the sea voyage from China on vessel Zhen Hua 10 via the Cape of Good Hope to arrive at DP World London Gateway Port, just 25 miles from Central London. The new cranes are for the third Berth at the DP World London Gateway container terminal, providing additional trade infrastructure for the U.K. when the berth opens later this year.

The Port of London saw larger ships than ever calling last year as the tonnage of cargo handled at Thames terminals climbed to 45.4 million metric tons (up 2 percent from 2014). PLA chief executive, Robin Mortimer said, “Last year a number of operators introduced new, bigger ships and records were broken. The record breakers included containership, UASC Barzan and cruise ship Viking Star. The 400 -meter-long Barzan set a new benchmark as the biggest-ever ship on the Thames when she called at London Gateway Port in September.

Maersk Line, container shipping line, has switched the UK call of its Samba service from Tilbury to DP World London Gateway Port. The first call on the service will be made by the Maersk Lanco on Monday, March 21. The rotation of the service includes calls at Santos, Paranagua, Itajal, Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Rio Grande, Santos, Pecem, Algeciras, Rotterdam, DP World London Gateway Port, Bremerhaven, Antwerp, Algeciras and Santos. DP World London Gateway has welcomed one of the world’s largest container ships carrying a record 18,601-teu. The UASC-owned Al Muraykh called at DP World London Gateway to unload 3,800 containers. Al Muraykh, a new generation of ultra-large container ships, is one of the largest in the world measuring 400 metres in length. The containers are loaded 11 storeys high above deck and 23 containers across the ship. With thousands more stowed below deck, the ship can carry up to 18,800 containers. The ship left Malaysia’s Port Klang carrying more shipping containers than any vessel on record and arrived at DP World London Gateway Port as its first port of call in Europe. Many of the goods being unloaded will be on the high streets of the UK in the coming days for the January sales.

DP World London Gateway Port has appointed James Leeson to the role of Head of Port Commercial following the announcement that Tabare Dominguez is to become Commercial Director at DP World Vancouver. Leeson started in the role this month, bringing with him more than 20 years of international experience in the shipping and ports industry. He was most recently Head of Commercial for Associated British Ports (ABP) Humber region, covering the ports of Immingham, Hull, Grimsby and Goole.

The MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A Australia Express Service will begin calling at DP World London Gateway Port, the U.K.’s newest deep-sea terminal, following changes to the service. The service will now provide direct calls between DP World London Gateway Port, King Abdullah port in Saudi Arabia, Colombo in Sri Lanka and ports around the Australian coast. It will reportedly be the fastest direct service between Northern Europe and Australia in the market. The call is a new trade lane into DP World London Gateway Port, further enhancing the suite of services on offer to U.K.

U.K. inland container service operator Pentalver opened a new five-acre site at the U.K.’s newest deep sea container port, DP World London Gateway, the London Port Authority announced. Plans for the site – which will be built in two phases – were revealed in January and position Pentalver as the largest container service operator at the port. The new yard, located adjacent to the port’s main gate, can be expanded to nine acres over the coming years. Pentalver has been providing empty storage, dry repair and reefer services at its temporary premises at DP World London Gateway since April 2014.

The Munkebo Maersk became the largest ship to ever sail up the River Thames as it called at DP World London Gateway, the U.K.’s newest deep-sea port hub. The 399-meter-long, 60-meter-wide, 195,000-ton Triple-E class vessel – equivalent in length to almost four football pitches and capable of carrying more than 18,300 TEUs – is one of the largest container vessels in the world, operating on Maersk’s new East-West Network. It was drawn alongside DP World London Gateway Port, adjacent to Europe’s largest logistics park, at 7:30 a.m.

DP World London Gateway plans to move forward with a third berth at the UK’s new deep-sea hub port, which will increase deep-sea access for ships carrying UK imports and exports. Berth Three will enable the use of an additional 400 meters of quay length with a dredged depth of 17 meters alongside, to handle the largest containerships. New birth will become operational in late 2016. It has also developed technology to ensure the port remains open in bad weather. The location of the DP World London Gateway Port, which has 16 million consumers within 50 miles, enables imports to enter the UK closer to where the goods will be consumed. A ground-breaking ceremony was held at DP World’s London Gateway Logistics Park to mark the start of construction on a 316,000 square foot distribution facility. The building is being developed speculatively as an equal joint venture between DP World, one of the world’s largest port operators, and Prologis, the global leader in industrial real estate. The ceremony took place on Friday, February 6 and was attended by Jamal Majid Bin Thaniah, Non-Executive Director and Vice Chairman for DP World, Mohammed Sharaf, DP World Group Chief Executive, and Hamid R.

As Britain’s new hub port celebrates its first birthday DP World London Gateway has expanded its network of shipping links and destinations, attracting a series of new deep-sea container shipping services. Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has confirmed that from next month (December), its service from South Africa to UK/Northwest Europe will make a direct London Gateway call, switching from the Port of Felixstowe. The new rotation will offer the best possible UK port coverage, MSC has told shippers.

New shipping services are being announced as the second berth at DP World London Gateway opens for business. Britain’s newest port doubled its capacity as the second berth began operations in May. Five new shipping routes to North America, South America East Coast and West Coast, the Middle East and Europe are starting. New rail, road and container services are also announced. The G6, one of the world’s largest shipping alliances, will start a new service at DP World London Gateway on Friday, May 16.

UK Transport Minister, Stephen Hammond, goes to see London Gateway’s state-of-the-art port technology. Fully automated stacking cranes (ASCs) currently being installed at the UK’s new national hub port will increase reliability and ensure smoother, more efficient operations 24 hours a day, even in weather conditions that would force non-automated systems to close. One of the first to view the new equipment being erected was UK Transport Minister Stephen Hammond, who witnessed the first of 40 ASCs being constructed at London Gateway, which opens later this year.
