Commission Appointments at Long Beach Port

The Long Beach City Council on Tuesday confirmed the appointments of Long Beach City College executive Lou Anne Bynum and former City Councilman Doug Drummond to second terms on the Board of Harbor Commissioners. Mayor Robert Garcia announced the reappointments last month. Both Bynum, the Harbor Board Vice President, and Drummond, a former Board President, were originally appointed by Garcia’s predecessor, Mayor Bob Foster. “These commissioners have done outstanding jobs helping to lead the Harbor Department,” Garcia said. “Their commitment to continuing public service will provide stability and consistency to the decisions governing Long Beach’s most important economic engine.

Port of Long Beach Awarded FEMA Security Grants

The Port of Long Beach’s Security Division has been awarded $3.4 million in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grants to fund ongoing projects that protect the port. The grants will enhance port security systems such as physical security equipment and monitoring and detection systems, including the Virtual Port System, and improve the resiliency of port security systems, the port said. “Protecting workers and the community, as well as ensuring business continuity, are top priorities at the Port of Long Beach,” said Lori Ann Guzmán, President of the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners. Long Beach Picketers Not Striking -Port CEO

Port of Long Beach CEO Jon Slangerup issued a statement addressing the status of picketing truckers at the harbor, pointing out that the demonstration is not a strike. “The Teamsters union started informational picketing this morning at the Port of Long Beach. To be clear, this is not a strike,” Slangerup said. “Dockworkers have reported to work and truckers have been able to enter and exit the affected terminals without delay. We do not expect that there will be any adverse impact to Port terminals or our ability to continue the outstanding progress that everyone has made in recent weeks to clear the congestion backlog and return to normal operations.

Moose Boats Delivers Two Patrol Vessels

Moose Boats, an aluminum boat designer and manufacturer in the San Francisco Bay Area announced the delivery of two patrol boats in late 2013. Moose Boats delivered a new M1-44 Catamaran Patrol Boat to Bridgeport Police Department on Long Island Sound. The M1-44 all-aluminum catamaran is powered by twin Cummins QSC8.3 600hp marine turbo diesel engines coupled via TwinDisc MG5075SC transmissions to twin Hamilton 322 water-jets with Hamilton Blue Arrow Controls. Underwater Inspection System for Port of Long Beach

Long Beach Police Department takes delivery of Coda Octopus Underwater Inspection System (UIS™) system. The Port of Long Beach is the second busiest seaport in the United States and is a major gateway for trade with Asia, handling over six million containers annually. The UIS™ which includes Echoscope® real-time 3D sonar technology will be used primarily for underwater inspections of the port's 10 piers and eighty berths and other critical infrastructure. It will also be used for preventative maintenance such as keeping the shipping channels clear of dangerous debris and other objects.

Ports Conduct Security Exercise

Harbor residents of and will see increased law enforcement activity this Wednesday and Thursday as area emergency responders participate in a 2-day U.S. Coast Guard lead counterterrorism exercise. The exercise is designed to test the Area Maritime Security Plan that was mandated by the Maritime Security Transportation Act of 2002 (MTSA). The exercise will take place in both the Ports of Los Angeles and and include simulated bombings that law enforcement and fire agencies will respond to in real-time. USCG Hosts Intermodal Container Strike Force

The U.S. Multi-Agency Strike Force Operation (MASFO) for the purpose of inspecting the transportation of intermodal containers to ensure compliance with various federal, state, and local regulations. “The Coast Guard is primarily checking containers for proper blocking and bracing of hazardous materials,” said Coast Guard Ensign Tony Migliorini, Director of Compliance and Security. Local police departments check drivers for proper driving credentials, search for contraband, and inspect trucks for safety regulations. Coast Guard Responds to Bomb Threat Aboard Cruise Ship

Coast Guard Los Angeles joined Long Beach Police Department, Long Beach Harbor Patrol, and Customs and Border Protection in responding to a bomb threat made against the Carnival cruise ship Paradise Friday afternoon. The threat was phoned into the Carnival cruise line reservation center and reported to the Coast Guard by company security officials. Cruise ship Carnival Paradise is following its comprehensive security plan to include security sweeps of the ship and reinspection of all cargo and passenger luggage. The Coast Guard is working closely with partner agencies and the cruise line to ensure the safety of the ship's passengers and crew.
