A Swedish consortium aims to launch commercially by 2025 a wind-driven car carrier that will emit 90% less carbon dioxide than a conventional roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) cargo ship, it said on Thursday.The 25-meter-long carrier will have a capacity for 7,000 cars and have a maximum height of 105 meters when its four 80-meter upright "wing sails" are fully extended - bringing to mind a futuristic version of the wings of a 19th century clipper."This will of course challenge our habits and when this vessel will be in the ocean sailing…
Wärtsilä's Propulsion For First CNG Carrier
The world's first ever carrier vessel for compressed natural gas (CNG) is to be powered by an integrated Wärtsilä propulsion system, chosen for its energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. The vessel is being built at the Jiangsu Hantong shipyard in China ordered by CIMC ENRIC and designed by CIMC ORIC for end user Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), the Indonesian state owned energy company. The order with Wärtsilä was placed during the fourth quarter, 2014. The new vessel will feature a 9-cylinder Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel main engine operating primarily on gas. Wärtsilä will also supply the controlled pitch propeller and gearbox, all of which will be fully integrated so as to optimise the propulsion efficiency.
Sherwin-Williams Navy Vessel Contract
Sherwin-Williams has been awarded the contract to supply marine coatings as part of a three-year overhaul of the supercarrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71). The project began in August and will continue through late 2012 at Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding Newport News, where the vessel was constructed and launched in October, 1984. The 1,092-ft long carrier has seen duty in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. The coatings contract was awarded by Mid-Atlantic Coatings, Chesapeake, Va. Sherwin-Williams will provide just-in-time coatings as work progresses for the exterior topside, underwater hull and freeboard. Tank coatings include potable water, ballast, feedwater, reserve feedwater and damage control voids.
Intrepid to Close for Repairs, Renovation
The aircraft carrier Intrepid, the military museum that has been docked on the Hudson River for 24 years, is scheduled to close on Oct. 1 and will be moved soon afterward to New Jersey for repairs and Staten Island for renovation. The New York Times reported that about a month after the museum closed, the carrier would be towed away from its mooring at Pier 86 and is not expected to return for 18 months. The museum's directors approved the general plan last week after Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and the City Council agreed to provide a total of $17 million over the next two years for the overhaul of the carrier and the pier. Gov. George E. Pataki pledged an additional $5 million in state economic development funds.
