An order for cranes to be used on Nautilus Minerals Inc.’s production support vessel has been awarded to MacGregor, headquarter in Kristiansand, Norway. The contract marks the third major long lead time equipment package to be awarded by the shipyard, Fujian Mawei Shipbuilding Limited. Vancouver Shipyards (VSY) has started design work under the Construction Engineering Contract for the Canadian Coast Guard’s Offshore Fisheries Science Vessel (OFSV). This contract will take a total of ten months to complete and lead to a build contract in early 2014. 1. Initial Design Phase – elements of the design will be matured and an initial cost model developed. 2. Functional Design Phase – design for spaces and systems will be completed, equipment identified, suppliers engaged and regulatory approval for the design obtained. 3. Production Design Phase – a detailed 3D model of the ship will be started to define final requirements for material and layout of spaces and systems.

Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE:HII) said that its Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division has received a $43.4 million modification to a previously awarded contract from the U.S. Navy for purchase of materials for the construction of the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN 79), the second ship in the Navy's newest class of carriers. The funds awarded to NNS will be used to purchase major, long-lead-time equipment, such as the ship's elevator machinery and large pumps.

The U.S. Navy has exercised contract options funding Austal’s acquisition of long lead-time equipment associated with the construction of two additional 338 ft Joint High Speed Vessels (JHSV). As the prime contractor, Austal currently has contracts to build the first three JHSVs as part of a 10-vessel program valued at up to $1.6b. The most recent award funds the acquisition of long lead time material for JHSV 4 and 5. Austal was awarded the initial contract to design and build the first 338 ft JHSV in November 2008, with contracts for an additional two vessels awarded in January this year.

The U.S. Navy awarded Ingalls Shipbuilding, a Northrop Grumman company, a $154.9 million contract to begin advance procurement of materials for the construction of future DDG 51 Class Aegis destroyers. The contract is to purchase a variety of DDG class equipment items for three additional Aegis destroyers authorized by Congress. Actual ship construction contracts are to be awarded to Ingalls and Bath Iron Works in a single, multiyear procurement process to be conducted later this year. The multiyear procurement plan calls for a total of six ships -- three to Bath, three to Ingalls -- with funding scheduled during a three-year period from the 2002 through 2004 fiscal years.
