US Coast Guard Says Calcasieu, Louisiana Oil Spill Contained

An estimated 3,500 gallons of used lubricant oil that spilled near Calcasieu Point Landing, in Louisiana, has been contained, U.S. Coast Guard officials said in a statement on Tuesday.The discharge, reported on Monday, was discovered to have escaped from the secondary containment at Martin Energy Services, the Coast Guard told Reuters in an emailed statement."The source of the spill has been secured and the oil has been contained with boom along the banks of the Lake Charles Industrial…

Oil Spill Reported in Mississippi River

Eight vessels with a combination of skimming packages, boom and absorbents have been deployed in response to an oil spill on the Mississippi River near Gramercy, La. The U.S. Coast Guard said it received a report Thursday morning from the National Response Center of stating oil was discharged from Petroleum Fuel and Terminal Mt. Airy during a transfer from the facility to a barge at mile marker 144.6 on the Mississippi River. Officials estimate that 2,500 gallons has been spilled. The Coast Guard conducted two overflights and deployed multiple teams to assess impacts. Oil spill response organizations OMI Environmental Solutions and Environmental Safety and Health are also responding, while the Center for Toxicology & Environmental Health LLC is conducting air monitoring.

Six Rescued from Grounded vessels

The Coast Guard rescued six people from grounded vessels in Atchafalaya Bay, Louisiana, Saturday. At 2:35 p.m. watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report from a private helicopter of a 17-foot johnboat with three people on board that was taking on water in the Atchafalaya Bay, Louisiana. Watchstanders directed the launch of an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans to assist the people. The mariners reported that their de-watering pump was keeping up with the flooding and requested a tow, and one member requested to be removed. The aircrew arrived on scene at 3:46 p.m. and provided the boat with a radio, blankets and transported one person to Berwick Boat Landing in Berwick, Louisiana, then refueled in Patterson, Louisiana.

Metal Shark Boats Gets Louisiana Governor's Award

Louisiana Economic Development (LED) inform that Gov. Bobby Jindal has presented Metal Shark Boats, (headquartered in Jeanerette in Iberia Parish) with the Governor’s Award for Entrepreneurial Excellence. The Governor’s Award for Entrepreneurial Excellence is periodically awarded by the governor to businesses that grow and provide more opportunity, more jobs and more commerce for the state of Louisiana. Metal Shark Boats has grown from an employment of 75 in 2012 to 200 employees today. LED explains that Metal Shark Boats continues to expand production of boats up to 40 feet in length at its original shipyard, filling customer orders for the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Navy, law enforcement and conservation agencies, and commercial companies.

Tugboat Allides with Inactive Wellhead, Triggers Discharge

The Coast Guard is reponding to limit pollution of the sea in the area 9 miles SW of Port Sulphur (on W. bank of the Mississippi) Louisiana. Coast Guard Sector New Orleans watchstanders received a report Tuesday that the 42-foot crewboat Sea Raider, allided with a wellhead owned by Swift Energy, causing the platform to discharge an oily-water mixture. Swift Energy, the responsible party, has contracted a barge to secure the wellhead. Response crews have deployed 1,800-feet of boom to contain the discharged oily-water mixture from the wellhead.

Super Bowl XLVII & Lower Mississippi Maritime Security Ops

In support of Super Bowl XLVII, a team of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies begin maritime safety and security operations on the lower Mississippi River, Monday. Response boats, patrol vehicles and enforcement personnel from more than 16 law enforcement agencies will conduct maritime security operations in the downtown New Orleans area and at the Port of New Orleans. All agencies will work together within a unified command, lead by the Port of New Orleans Harbor Police Department and the U.S. Coast Guard, to provide a coordinated safe and secure environment for Super Bowl participants and the general public. This level of interagency coordination for the Super Bowl is the culmination of several months of planning involving all law enforcement agencies.

Wellhead Secured in Barataria Waterway

The U.S. Coast Guard continues to work with the Louisiana Oil Spill Coordinator's Office LOSCO, Louisiana Department of Natural Resources LDNR, Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality LDEQ, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries LAWLF, the Louisiana State Police LSP, and Jefferson Parish Emergency Services to minimize environmental damage resulting from an allision between a tow vessel and a wellhead in the Barataria Waterway, which occurred at approximately 1 a.m., July 27. The Unified Command Post, established at U.S. Coast Guard Sector New Orleans, is reporting that the wellhead was secured at 6:05 p.m. August 1 and is no longer emitting oil or natural gas into Barataria Bay. The wellhead is also equipped with a light.

USCG Responds to Barge Explosion

The Coast Guard is responding to a tank barge explosion on the Mississippi River near Sunshine, La., April 24. At approximately 3:30 p.m., watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report from the Iberville Parish Fire Department of a barge explosion at the LBC Tank Terminals. The explosion was reported to have occurred while the barge was loading benzene. The IPFD reported the fire is out and that there were two injuries. The extent of those injuries is unknown. Air monitoring is being conducted, and a Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Baton Rouge 25-ft response boat, barge inspectors, and Coast Guard investigators have responded on scene. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is assisting the Coast Guard in its response efforts.

Restoration Begins for T/V Westchester Spill

Federal and Louisiana agencies settled with Marine Oil Trader 3, Ltd. and Ermis Maritime Corp. for the November 2000 T/V Westchester oil spill into the Mississippi River in Plaquemines Parish, La. With oversight from the Commerce Department’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), U.S. Department of the Interior’s U.S. restoration projects to address the resources injured by the spill. On Nov. 28, 2000, the T/V Westchester grounded in the Mississippi River at River Mile 38, discharging approximately 500,000 gallons of crude oil into the Mississippi River downstream from New Orleans in Plaquemines Parish, La. hunting opportunities. to conduct a natural resource damage assessment to identify and restore injured natural resources.

'Rigs to Reefs' Request Triple

As a result of damage to offshore oil and gas platforms from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the number of request to convert rigs to artificial reefs in the Gulf of Mexico has tripled, according to a report on Forbes.com. According to the report, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries usually gets 10 to 12 requests each year to use abandoned rigs to create fish habitat. But that number has soared to 40 requests this year.

Coast Guard Responds to Oil Spill

Credit: U.S. Coast Guard photographs The Coast Guard is responding to an inland oil spill at mile marker 32 of the Ouachita/Black River. These Aug. 22 photographs show the location where the motor vessel Tulsa, a dredge, sank in the middle of the channel Monday, spilling an estimated 840 gallons of diesel fuel, hydraulic oil and lube oil. All four crewmembers were safely rescued from the water and the waterway was closed to maritime traffic to facilitate the cleanup and salvage operations. Leading the cleanup and investigation of the incident are personnel from Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Baton Rouge, La. Also assisting are personnel from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, Louisiana State Police and Army Corps of Engineers.
