Market Watch: Container Freight Rates Fall, Costs Soar

"So far this year, container volumes have fallen nearly 2% year-on-year while average freight rates have declined, reaching 2019 levels in September. Since then, they have continued to fall. However, the cost to charter a ship remains 25% higher than in 2019,” says Niels Rasmussen, Chief Shipping Analyst at BIMCO.Liner operators continue to struggle with a worsening supply/demand balance, affecting freight rates. On average, the fleet has year-to-date grown 5% and 19% compared with 2022 and 2019 respectively.

WinGD Issues NOL for Chevron's Taro Ultra Advanced 40

Clean piston - it is vital for high performance 40 BN cylinder oils to have excellent performance, centred on their cleaning ability. The test was done on WinGD 9X82 for over 4300h VLSFO. The feed rate during the test was 0.8 g/kWh. (Photo: Chevron)

Chevron Marine Products’ Taro Ultra Advanced 40 oil has successfully passed NOL (No Objection Letter) requirements by engine manufacturer WinGD. This follows the earlier NOL award for Taro Ultra Advanced 40 from MAN Energy Solutions. This latest test validates the suitability of the oil for use in WinGD engines operating with liquid fuels containing sulphur in the range 0.00<1.50 % m/m, which includes very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO). The test also approved the general usage…

Decarbonization Center Finishes Two Trials for Biofuel Bunkering

The Global Center for Maritime Decarbonization (GCMD) has completed trials on two supply chains of biofuel blends for vessel bunkering, the center said on Tuesday. The maritime industry has been trying to source for green fuels to reduce carbon emissions ahead of the International Maritime Organization's 2030 and 2050 decarbonization targets. Biofuel bunkering is gaining traction in Singapore, with more than 90 biofuel bunkering operations completed last year, according to Singapore's Maritime and Port Authority. The trials were part of a $18 million global biofuels bunkering project launched by the GCMD in July last year, which is expected to span 12 to 18 months. The two trials took place from Oct. 31 to Feb.
