MAN Unveils Dual-fuel Methanol 175D Engine

MAN Energy Solutions has unveiled a dual-fuel version of its MAN 175D high-speed engine, capable of operating on methanol, that's scheduled to become available to the market by the end of 2026. The new variant, designated MAN 175DF-M, will be available both as newbuild and retrofit variants.MAN Energy Solutions states that the 175DF-M will be optimized for diesel-mechanical and diesel-electric propulsion to achieve the largest methanol share and best efficiency for various applications and load profiles.

Shipbuilder and designer VARD has ordered 4 × MAN 12V175D-MEM gensets in connection with the building of a new purpose-built, cable-laying vessel (CLV) for Danish subsea specialit NCT Offshore.The gensets will form part of the vessel’s diesel-electric DP2 propulsion system, which also includes a hybrid battery package.The high-speed 175D gensets will each come accompanied by compact MAN selective catalytic reduction systems. FMD's New High-speed Engine to be Tested for US Navy’s LUSV Platform

Fairbanks Morse Defense (FMD) announced it has been contracted to provide and test one nForcer high-speed engine to qualify for the Navy’s large unmanned surface vessel (LUSV) platform. To qualify, the engine must perform for a minimum of 720 hours in a land-based test environment without human intervention. Testing will begin in Q3 2023.“The LUSV platform has unprecedented power and propulsion requirements, which means that the Navy needs a power-dense engine with a reliable track record,” said FMD CEO George Whittier.

Big Win for Maersk Fluid Technology’s BOB System

In the second half of 2015, Maersk Fluid Technology introduced a new version of its cylinder oil ‘Blending-On-Board’ (BOB) system, targeting medium-sized 2-stroke propulsion engines with a cylinder bore between 420 and 680 mm. Now the first volume order has been placed for retrofit of the SEA-Mate B1000 system onto 12 tankers delivered to Maersk Tankers between 2005 and 2008 – ten vessels equipped with Wärtsilä (WinGD) RTA and RT-Flex engines with a bore between 580 and 620 mm and two vessels with engines designed by MAN Diesel & Turbo. The order has been placed after careful evaluation of the expected payback time, which was found to be less than 2 years when taking the proven fuel savings, system oil and cylinder oil cost reductions into account.

Maersk to Address ‘Blending-On-Board’

Visitors to the 2016 European Marine Engineering Conference in Amsterdam this year will be able to hear a keynote speech from Maersk Fluid Technology managing director Jens Byrgesen, who will talk about his company’s success with “Blending-On-Board” lubrication technology. Maersk’ SEA-Mate Blending-On-Board concept is based on proprietary technology designed to enable the operator to custom blend a fit-for-purpose cylinder lubricant from recycled two-stroke system oil and a cylinder oil concentrate with a base-number up above 300 BN.

Bulk Carriers to Adopt Wärtsilä Dual-Fuel Engine Technology

 A new cement carrier for JT Cement will feature a 6-cylinder Wärtsilä 34DF main engine, making it the first bulk carrier to adopt Wärtsilä's multi fuel capability.

The increasing use of LNG as a marine fuel is further emphasized with the latest order for Wärtsilä's dual-fuel engine technology. A new cement carrier being built at the Scheepswerf Ferus Smit yard in the Netherlands will feature a six-cylinder Wärtsilä 34DF main engine, making it the first bulk carrier to adopt Wärtsilä's multi fuel capability. (TMPS) announced that Chuck Kissee has joined its leadership team as the Director of Business Development to support Anglo Belgian Corporation (ABC) diesel engine sales. EMD, MaK Asia Expand Marine Offering

Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD), part of Progress Rail Services Corporation, a Caterpillar company, announced MaK Asia will be adding the EMD 710 two-cycle engine to their marine sales portfolio. Caterpillar Unveils the M 32 E, Increased Power Rating

Caterpillar Marine Power Systems announce the development of the MaK M 32 E, a new high performance marine diesel engine platform for the commercial marine industry based on the M 32 C engine series. The M 32 E engine boasts an increased power rating of 550 kW per cylinder @ 720 and 750 rpm and with total output ranging from 3,300 kW for the six cylinder configuration to 4,950 kW for the nine cylinder configuration. First engine deliveries are foreseen for fall 2014. Offering both 720 and 750 rpm and the higher power output ideal for the offshore market in diesel electric and auxiliary applications with multi-engine concepts, the M 32 E is the first MaK “5 Mega Watt” power solution in the 320 mm bore segment.

MAN Diesel Powers Fall-Pipe, Rock-Dumping Vessel

Construcciones Navales del Norte (La Naval de Sestao) of Spain’s Basque country delivered the Simon Stevin to Jan de Nul in February. Driven by a diesel-electric propulsion system comprising a series of MAN Diesel 32/40 engines, the new addition to the Belgian group’s fleet is claimed to be the world’s largest fall-pipe and rock-dumping vessel with a capacity of 19,500 m3. Construction of the ship lasted 26 months, with keel-laying taking place in April 2008 and launching in March 2009. The Simon Stevin recently departed for Australia for its first commercial projects. The Simon Stevin is powered by five MAN Diesel nine-cylinder 32/40 main engines. Each delivers 4,500 kW at 720 rpm and is manufactured by STX Engine Co., Ltd., MAN Diesel’s Korean licensee.

EMD’s EPA Part 1042 Emissions Kits

Electro-Motive Diesel, Inc. announced that it received US EPA certification for emissions kits according to EPA rule 40 CFR Part 1042, which requires a 25% reduction in particulate matter emissions. The new kits will allow marine operators of EMD Model 645 and 710 engines, both roots-blown and turbocharged, to comply with the mandated EPA emissions requirements when the engines are overhauled. The new Part 1042 kits reduce lube oil consumption by more than 25% and reduce fuel consumption by up to 3% over EPA defined marine duty cycles.

LR: Flexible Ships Needed in Volatile Times

High or volatile oil prices and environmental concerns, point to the need for new designs capable of operating efficiently at different speeds. Lloyd’s Register warns that care needs to be taken when running at reduced power outputs. Most container ships trading today, and on order, were designed for a world of relatively low energy prices. With oil at recent high levels many owners have been implementing or considering slow steaming strategies. Slow steaming may also be seen at present as an answer to over-capacity.

Western Moves Ahead with High Tech Power

On June 15, Western launched its largest piece of high-performance machinery to date: the 120-ft. (36.6 m) Gulf Titan which is 12 ft. longer than Western's two previous builds, the Western Titan and Pacific Titan. As with those two vessels, Western built the new Gulf Titan with design assistance from Jensen Maritime, Seattle. The added length will improve sea-keeping characteristics and increase fuel capacity by 40,000 gallons, says Bob Shrewsbury, Jr., president of Western Towboat Co., Inc. And a new five-blade propeller design with added pitch is expected to coax an extra 2,000 lbs. of bollard pull from the twin Z-drive propulsion system with high-performance nozzles.

Conoco To Build New Towboats

Conoco is building four new towboats with innovative safety, environmental and design improvements that set new standards for the inland towing industry. "We are raising the bar for towboat design, machinery and marine systems by constructing American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) class boats," said Karen Stacey, director of Conoco domestic marine. Contrary to the name, towboats actually "push" cargo barges along the Intracoastal Waterway and major rivers. The new towboats, being built by Orange Shipbuilding of Orange, Texas, will have safety enhancements such as CO2 extinguishing systems, fuel shutdowns, fire detection systems and fire fighting systems.

Marine Innovations

In extending its adherence to delivering cost-efficient and safety driven technologies, DNV has introduced a new means of quickly and accurately determining steel thickness can speed ship surveys. It is especially valuable in inspecting old and corroded steelwork. Present-day methods, based on ultrasonic thickness measurements, are said to have dubious reliability on heavily corroded plates, and for large vessels are also considered too slow. The basic technological challenge was to transmit 100 percent of the signal energy through corroded steel plates, and receive and interpret the reflected signal to give an accurate thickness measurement. The basic principles of the new measuring method (half-wave resonance) have been known for 40 years.

TOWBOAT TECH: Tougher, Kinder and more Hospitable

The design challenge for towboats in the new Millennium is they are being called upon to do tougher jobs on the water but at the same time have be more environmentally friendly to the water on which they sail. Also, many of today's towboats are light years ahead of their predecessors of just a few years ago in crew amenities and berthing spaces. "Much of the new technology we are seeing on towboats is because of new IMO, EPA, OSHA and ABS regulations," said Terry Boffone, president of Progressive Barge Line, Westwego, La. Progressive's business is mid-streaming fueling, so careful delivery of the products they carry such as diesel fuel and gasoline from the tank barge to the ship is critical.

GE to Power Tuna Clipper

GE Transportation's marine business, in conjunction with its distributor Marinsa Ecuador S.A., announced it has delivered a GE 16-cylinder 7FDM diesel engine for installation aboard the Cap. Berny B tuna clipper. The vessel, owned by Berni Buehs and Sons, Manta, Ecuador, is being repowered from a dual-engine propulsion system to a single GE medium-speed diesel engine arrangement, GE reported today at Nor-Shipping 2005.
