The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) coordinated the rescue of three people and a dog Thursday approximately 900 miles northeast of Bermuda. Rescued was 29-year-old Henri Worthalter of Belgium, 55-year-old Leonard Rorke of the United Kingdom, 50-year-old Lisa Rorke of the United Kingdom and Dexter, a Jack Russell Terrier, after the 49-foot sailboat, the Blue Pearl, sank in the Atlantic Ocean. The USCG said its 5th District Command Center watchstanders were contacted at approximately 6:30 p.m.

Christine Cabau Woehrel has taken up her new role as CEO of the Marseilles Fos port authority after two years heading the Port of Dunkirk. She succeeds Jean-Claude Terrier following a French transport ministry nomination that was backed by the port’s supervisory board in February and has now been confirmed by government decree. Her move marks a return to the headquarters city of CMA GGM, France’s biggest and the world’s third largest container carrier, where she worked from 1987-2011.

The Marseilles Fos port authority has signed a five-year renewal of its agreement with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) to provide management training for ports in French-speaking Africa. The collaboration dates from 1996 and runs within UNCTAD’s Train for Trade program. Under the scheme, every two years the leading French port hosts a training visit attended by some 20 directors and senior managers from African ports. InterMoor Inc., an Acteon company, has been awarded a preset mooring project for Noble Energy offshore Equatorial Guinea. InterMoor will be providing the design, engineering, procurement and installation services for preset moorings in the Aseng Field.  Five preset mooring legs will be installed at a water depth of approximately 3,445 ft. The Pride South Pacific and the Atwood Hunter are the rigs Noble Energy will be utilizing for this project, and the Maersk Terrier will be the installation vessel. Personnel will also be provided by InterMoor for the drilling program that will last approximately 14 to 16 months.

Upon completion of the project, the creation of two new terminals due on stream in 2010, capacity will increase from the current 1m teu per year to 2.5m teu. Some 400 direct jobs will also be generated in addition to several thousand in allied sectors. Backing from the BEI – the European Union finance institution – acknowledges that the scheme meets several criteria for the development of European transport networks. During the signing, M. de Fontaine Vive said the project was vital given the strategic location of Marseilles Fos in Motorways of the Sea and intermodal transport networks being put in place. M. Terrier said the port was delighted to have found a stable and respected financial partner offering highly competitive interest rates and repayment terms.

With varied public and private sector experience, 56-year-old M. Terrier has been D-G at the since March 2004and is expected to start his new job in September following ratification by the French cabinet. M. Janin, 61, said he was “honoured and proud” to have been responsible for the development of the port since arriving at Marseilles-Fos in December 2005, adding that he was convinced the large majority of personnel were ready to play their part in building “the great port of tomorrow”. In addition to overseeing construction of the Fos 2XL container terminal to its near conclusion, M. Janin launched the Fos 3XL and Fos 4XL initiatives, which offer the port long-term container capacity.

David Clark's record breaking bid to be the oldest man to sail solo round the world ended in disaster on Thursday as his yacht sank two days after leaving Cape Town, Reuters reported. He survived and has been picked up, but his white West Highland Terrier Mickey -- who had a life-saving operation while in Cape Town -- was lost. "His yacht started taking on water and he radioed for help. He abandoned ship and was picked up by a nearby vessel but his dog was drowned," Sea Rescue Coordinating Center spokesman Jinx Botes said. Clark left Cape Town aboard his 42-ft., steel-hulled boat "Mollie Milar" on Tuesday on the final 7,000 mile leg of a solo round the world journey that would have taken him back to port in Fort Lauderdale on May 17 -- his 77th birthday.

Commander Master Chief Mark Davidson becomes the U.S. Navy's “Old Tar,” symbolic of the senior Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist. The award was presented by Surface navy Association executive director, Capt. Bill Erickson, USN (Ret.), at the USS Constitution in Boston. For Master Chief Mark Davidson, becoming the “Old Tar” doesn’t mean he’s old, it signifies he’s a seasoned and experienced Surface Warrior, just like the USS Constitution. Davidson, the command master chief at Navy Recruiting District St. Louis, recently was presented with the “Old Tar” award from the Surface Navy Association (SNA), signifying that he has the earliest qualification date as an Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS) among all Sailors in the U.S.
