DNV granted an Approval in Principle (AIP) to Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) for a new design of intra-Europe 1,900 TEU feeder containerships. The AIP is the result of a joint development project between DNV and HMD to develop an efficient and reliable feeder vessel design to respond to the European shortsea container market. The design was reviewed for compliance with DNV’s rules for containerships, including the option of using liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a ship fuel. DNV also provided technical support on the basic design in terms of stability…

Forward Ships Receives South Korean Patent

Forward Ships, which enables the adoption of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as the fuel of choice for ships at a global scale, said that its  innovative machinery arrangement received its first official patent right from South Korea, a major shipbuilding nation. The Korean Intellectual Property Office Examiner decided to grant this patent application pursuant to Article 66 of the Korean Patent Act to Arista Shipping S. A.  The Project Forward initiative led by Athens-Based Arista Shipping, demonstrates that with LNG as fuel, an advanced hull design, and highly efficient propulsion machinery, it will be possible to meet the IMO’s target for a 40 percent reduction in carbon intensity by 2030.

Multipurpose vessel Adhémar de Saint-Venant launched

AVIC shipyard in Weihai, China launched Jan De Nul Group’s new multipurpose vessel Adhémar de Saint-Venant. The sister vessel, Daniel Bernoulli, will be launched in March 2017. To perform a variety of functions, different mission equipment is available and can be installed on the vessels: subsea rock installation through an inclined fall pipe or a flexible fall pipe; subsea trenching, installation of cables and umbilicals; installation works by means of a heave compensated crane etc ... This definitely makes them unique. To safely and efficiently perform these functions the vessels are provided with Dynamic Positioning (DP2), a fully diesel-electric machinery arrangement, a comfortable accommodation for 60 persons and a SPS notation.

Con-Green 2000 - Next Generation of Feeder Vessels

The largest container vessels are designed for the greatest possible efficiency – maximum intake, minimum fuel consumption. Their smaller cousins, however, have not received the same level of attention – but this is beginning to change, says Jai Oh Sun, Engineer / Pre-Contract, DNV GL AS. For the last few years, the titans of the container world have stolen the headlines; 18,000, 19,000 and even 20,000 TEU giants have arrived and reshaped the way goods are transported around the world. This has resulted in a need for more feeder services to keep these giants filled and reap the efficiency benefits of their size. For the Korean shipbuilder…

Maintenance: How Well Do You Listen?

A predictive / preventative maintenance program that includes vibration analysis can help save time and money. Are you one of those people who “listen to your gut?” If you are in charge of a vessel’s maintenance program – listening to your machinery is vital to its livelihood. And, if it’s in high demand, or on a tight schedule, chances are your livelihood, and that of your crew, is at stake too. Vibration is annoying and uncomfortable – easy to notice on a pleasure craft – not so much on a commercial vessel.

CAD/CAM: ShipConstructor 2004 used for M/V Cheramie BoTruc 38

To meet the requirements of the BoTruc project, Bollinger's design group chose ShipConstructor2004, the latest version of the 3-D product modeling software developed by Albacore Research Ltd (ARL), Canada. Bollinger has been using ShipConstructor for more than six years. For the near future, Bollinger plans to integrate the ShipConstructor SQL project database with other related business process databases, such as enterprise resource planning, purchasing, and accounting. Among the design demands of the BoTruc OSVs is the significant increase of cargo capacity. Bollinger's executive vice president of new construction, Danny Irby, noted that while the 180-ft vessels could carry 1…

Offshore Design: The Future is Now

The maritime industry has an image problem. Perceived to be an aging industry, many players in the maritime niche deal daily with the very real problem of replenishing its employment ranks, from desk jobs designing and operating vessels, to those at sea and in the construction yards. While the problem is multi-faceted and without a clear solution, this article is not about problems. It's about hope and the future. Traditional industries such as maritime are often lost to the youth, as higher-profile, more glamourous opportunities are found in computing and entertainment, for example. Simply put, many bright minds are lost before the battle has begun.

Carnival's New Spirit

The latest testament to Finnish cruise ship building prowess is embodied in the recently delivered Carnival Spirit, a ship that will become well-known not only for what it contains within, but for what it does not let out. Carnival Spirit, newbuilding no. 499, was built at Kvaerner Masa-Yards' Helsinki New Shipyard for Carnival Cruise Lines, and is the second ship in a series of "Panamax-Max" size ship. (The first, Costa Atlantica for Costa Crociere, was delivered in June 2000). Interestingly, the ship is unique because of its similarity to other vessels. The joint development of the Spirit-class series actually started in the mid-1990s, with KMY presenting its "Project 8000" vision to Carnival in 1994.

An Innovative LNG Carrier Concept

Concurrent with marine industry consolidation on the ship owning, building and supply fronts, increasingly innovative vessels concepts are originating from in-house design teams sitting with the major equipment manufacturers. Single-source supplier is today’s mantra on the commercial and military fronts, with companies such as Wärtsilä leading the way. The company recently published details of an innovative new LNG carrier concept, the Wärtsilä DF-electric propulsion concept for liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, bringing together two technologies: electric propulsion and dual-fuel engines. The Wärtsilä DF-electric LNG carrier concept is designed for a single-screw vessel with four cargo tanks and a capacity of about 138,000 cu.
