Leavitt tapped to head Northrop Grumman Maritime Systems Business

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) named Todd Leavitt, vice president of the company's Maritime Systems business unit, effective immediately. Leavitt will have executive responsibility for all Maritime Systems programs and products. He will lead all domestic and international programs within the Maritime Systems business area to include naval radars, electronic warfare capabilities, navigation systems, machinery controls, and power and control systems. Leavitt joined the company in 2007 as manager, Surface Navy Futures. In 2010, he was appointed director, Maritime Sensors and Shipboard Integration, and served in that role until his present appointment. Prior to joining Northrop Grumman, Leavitt served 21 years as a surface warfare officer in the U.S.

Northrop Grumman to Supply Steering for USN Destroyers

Northrop Grumman Corporation has been awarded contracts totaling $14.4 million by prime contractors General Dynamics Bath Iron Works and Huntington Ingalls Industries to supply the steering gear system for three new DDG 51 Class Arleigh Burke destroyers. The steering gear system is vital for the control and maneuverability of the ship and is directly linked to the integrated bridge, as well as the navigation and inertial navigation systems that Northrop Grumman is supplying under separate contracts for the DDG 51 Class destroyers. Northrop Grumman has been the sole provider of the steering gear system for the DDG 51 Class since production began during the 1980s. This contract award brings the program's total to 69 steering systems.

A Unique new Fireboat for the City of Chicago

In April 2011, The Chicago Fire Department took delivery of a new Fireboat to replace the aging Victor L. Schlaeger. The vessel was named in memory of Firefighter Christopher Wheatley, who lost his life in active duty in 2010. The new vessel was designed by Robert Allan Ltd., Naval Architects of Vancouver BC, and was built by Hike Metal Products of (serendipitously!) Wheatley, Ontario. This fireboat is one of several fireboats designed by Robert Allan Ltd. and built in Canada for US cities in recent years…

Rolls-Royce Contract for Chinese Research Vessel

Rolls-Royce won a $32.2m order from Chinese conglomerate Sinopec to design and equip a specialist seismic research vessel. When operational it will carry out detailed surveys of the seabed to identify oil and gas reserves. The contract includes efficient power and propulsion systems and a range of advanced automated handling systems for seismic equipment. Rolls-Royce has a growing presence in the subsea and seismic technology markets, and during the last three months, inclusive of this contract, the Group has secured seismic orders totalling more than $80.6m. “Rolls-Royce has decades of experience in designing specialist vessels to meet the needs of the oil and gas industry and continues to develop industry leading technology.

A ceremony was held on November 19, 2001, to rename the Naval Ship Systems Engineering Station’s (NAVSSES) Surface Ship Systems Engineering Complex, the Richard C. Cunningham Engineering Complex. The building (77H) was renamed to honor Cunningham’s pioneering work and engineering innovations in machinery controls and other accomplishments in naval machinery engineering. During the ceremony, Rear Admiral William Cobb, Jr., the Program Executive Officer for Theater Surface Combatants at the Naval Sea Systems Command, presented a special AEGIS Program Lifetime Achievement Award to Mrs. Debra Cunningham on behalf of Richard. KCI Konecranes to Supply Goliath Crane to Ingalls

KCI Konecranes has won the contract to supply one of the world's largest cranes to Ingalls Shipbuilding, Pascagoula, Miss. The crane, in a category known as Goliath due to its massive size, is one of fewer than 100 in the world. Eighty percent of the Goliath cranes built in the past decade have been built by KCI Konecranes. Ingalls has announced a major facility refit program that will directly benefit a variety of shipbuilding programs for Ingalls military and commercial customers. The shipyard recently was contracted to build the first cruise ships in the U.S. in more than 40 years for American Classic Voyages, Co. Under the terms of the contract, with a potential value of $1.4 billion for three ships, Ingalls will initially build two 1,900 passenger cruise ships.
