Maersk Reroutes Vessels Around Africa from Red Sea

Denmark's Maersk said on Tuesday its vessels previously paused and due to sail through the southern Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden would be rerouted around Africa via the Cape of Good Hope due to attacks on vessels in the area. As of Monday, December 18, Maersk had paused around 20 vessels, of which half were waiting east of the Gulf of Aden and the rest were waiting south of the Suez canal in the Red Sea or north of it in the Mediterranean Sea, the company said in a statement.

Rotterdam Container Terminal Set for €1 Billion Expansion

A.P. Moller - Maersk's container terminal operating arm APM Terminals announced the expansion of its Maasvlakte II terminal in Rotterdam, increasing the terminal's capacity by approx. 2 million TEU The project involves a site of approximately 47.5 hectares with 1,000 meters of deep-sea quay. The Port of Rotterdam Authority is now constructing the new quay walls, which will be completed by mid-2024. The new section is expected to be operational in the second half of 2026.APM Terminals opened at Maasvlakte II in 2015 as a fully automated facility with zero carbon emissions.

German Regulators Probe Sale of Maersk Container Maker to China's CIMC

Germany's Federal Cartel Office is taking a closer look into the planned sale of Maersk's refrigerated containers maker to China International Marine Containers, a spokesman for the office said on Thursday.The office has opened an investigation into the effects the takeover of Maersk Container Industry by CIMC could have on the affected markets, it said.The Danish shipping company signed an agreement to divest its container manufacturer to CIMC in September for $987.3 million.However, regulatory authorities still need to approve the plans.

CMA CGM Sees Strong Shipping Demand Continuing in First Half

Maersk Tests Containerized Battery System

Danish shipping giant Maersk will install a containerized 600 kWh marine battery system on board the 4,500 TEU Maersk Cape Town in December 2019 to improve vessel performance and reliability while reducing CO2 emissions.“This trial will provide a greater understanding of energy storage that will support Maersk in moving towards further electrification of its fleet and port terminals. A fire broke out in the engine room on board Maersk’s Panamax containership Olga Maersk last week. The incident happened while the vessel was en route from Panama to Cartagena.An official press release from the operator of the ship Hamburg Süd said: "We regret to advise that on January 29th a fire in the engine room on board the vessel “Olga Maersk” was reported while the vessel was on route from Panama to Cartagena. Container Equipment Market Surges Ahead: Drewry

The move towards container leasing and away from carrier ownership continues unabated and the leased fleet now has a clear majority over that owned by transport operators, according to the latest edition of the Container Census & Leasing and Equipment Insight published by global shipping consultancy Drewry. Leasing companies accounted for 55% of container purchases in 2017, which continues the trend seen for most of this decade. With the fleet of containers owned by transport operators growing by a mere 2.4%, the leased fleet added 6.7% and the share owned by lessors is now nearing 52%. “Drewry expects this trend to continue over the next few years,” said Drewry’s director of research products Martin Dixon.
