Moody's Threatens Downgrade of Maersk

Denmark-based shipping and oil company A.P. Møller-Mærsk A/S (Maersk)'s decision to split the group into two parts now get the credit rating agency for questioning to the light blue conglomerate's debt. It ends "probably" with a downgrade, because large parts of the oil revenue will no longer contribute to upholster transport division. "We have placed the ratings of Maersk on review for downgrade because we believe that its business diversification will reduce significantly with the separation of its energy businesses which represented 62% of EBITDA as of the first half of 2016," says Maria Maslovsky, a Moody's Vice President-Senior Analyst and lead analyst for Maersk.

Fitch: Maersk Gets Little Solace from Sectoral Diversification

The decision by A.P. Moeller-Maersk A/S to split into two separate divisions - Transport & Logistics and Energy - reflects the challenging fundamentals in the sectors in which it operates, and diminishing counter-cyclical benefits of operating in them in the current economic cycle, Fitch Ratings says. We do not expect the split to significantly improve the performance of the group's separate units, although the increased focus may help long-term strategy execution. We believe operational diversification does not consistently provide material benefit to Moeller-Maersk's business profile because the industries in which the company operates are highly cyclical and volatile.

Container Insulation: Maersk Uges EU to Act

Maersk Container Industry calls for tougher enforcement of European environmental legislation regarding reefer containers. "We urge the European Commission to ensure enforcement of existing EU legislation regarding insulation foam in reefer containers," says Peter K. Nymand, CEO for Maersk Container Industry. "This would benefit the environment, and it would help European innovation and environmental investments pay off," Nymand adds. Current EU legislation bans the "import" or "placing on the market" of reefer containers with significant potential to damage the climate and ozone layer. But thousands of such containers nevertheless circulate in Europe's internal market on virtually the same market conditions as more environmentally friendly reefers.

Maersk Ship Plastic Balls as Fruit

Maersk Container Industry (MCI) purchased 116,000 plastic balls for a trial to test & increase the effectiveness of its refrigerated containers in delivering fresh produce. The balls were adapted so they would respire in much the same way as fresh fruit and vegetables do, enabling MCI to assess various improvements to its reefer box service. MCI's container technology manager Lars Lübker explains why the company opted to run such a large trial: "The challenge by transporting fruits and vegetables is that they respire. They are living organisms and they need to be taken special care of. "In order to improve the performance of a container we had to develop a specific artificial fruit. We did that by purchasing 116,000 plastic balls.
