The ABB Electric Tow Boat Beckons to Inland Operators

Long a staple for offshore service providers, a more compact and carefully designed version of the diesel electric option is now available for inland pushboats. For budget conscious operators (and who isn’t, in this environment?), the stars may finally be aligned.For many years, electric propulsion has proven to be a viable propulsion solution for many different types of vessels. Most familiar to workboat stakeholders would be the advent of the ‘diesel electric’ offshore serve providers (OSV) that became commonplace during the offshore boom era. Those vessels operated in a different regulatory environment, with the emphasis more leaning towards operational efficiencies and fuel economy.

ABB Wins $160 Million in Orders

ABB won orders worth $160m from Jurong Shipyard Pte Ltd. for the design, supply, supervision of installation, testing and commissioning of the main electrical systems for seven next generation drill ships that will operate in the deep water oil and gas fields off the coast of Brazil. The orders were booked in the fourth quarter of last year and first quarter of this year. The ships will be used to drill wells in the enormous offshore pre-salt fields off the southeast coast of Brazil.

ABB Wins Offshore Contracts of $150m

ABB, a power and automation technology group, recently won six contracts collectively worth more than $150m to supply main electrical systems for drilling rigs and drill-ships built in Asia. The orders were booked during the third quarter of 2008. Among the new orders are three deepwater drilling rigs now under construction at the Jurong Shipyard in Singapore, two drill-ships (Stena DrillMAX ICE and the Pride #4 drill-ship) to be built at Samsung Heavy Industries and another drill-ship for Metrostar to be built at Hyundai Heavy Industries in Korea. Matti Reinikkala, head of ABB’s Process Automation division attributes the recent commercial success to the group’s global strategy.
