Japanese engine manufacturer JFE has entered a new cooperation agreement with MAN Diesel & Turbo for MAN's 32/44CR, 35/44DF, 48/60CR and 51/60DF modern four-stroke engine types. The agreement applies to marine newbuild projects for ships to be deployed on Japanese domestic trade routes, and where the shipyards and shipowners involved are located in Japan. JFE has produced and supplied medium-speed diesel engines since 1964 under the SEMT Pielstick license, which was acquired by the MAN Group back in 2006.

In the light of indications of possible irregularities during the handover of 4-stroke marine diesel engines produced by MAN Diesel & Turbo SE, the management board of MAN SE has launched an investigation, to be carried out by the compliance department of MAN SE together with external consultants. SAL Schiffahrtskontor Altes Land has put the new building MV ‘Lone’ into service. Just three months after the German-based heavy-lift shipping company has sent the MV ‘Svenja’ - the world’s largest heavy-lift vessel - on its maiden voyage, the company’s fleet has now been expanded by a second vessel of the same Type 183. Just like its sister vessel, the heavy lifter was built at Sietas shipyard in Hamburg in six months. It has a lifting capacity of 2,000 tons and a speed of 20 knots. While the MV ‘Svenja’ features a Dynamic Positioning System 1 (DP1), the MV ‘Lone’ is equipped with a DP2.

The merger announced between MAN Diesel SE and MAN Turbo AG to form MAN Diesel & Turbo SE, based in Augsburg, is now complete, the corresponding entry having been made in the register of companies. The process of amalgamating the two former MAN sister companies into one enterprise has thus been achieved. In economic terms, the merger has come into effect retroactively as of 1 January 2010. By combining the complementary product portfolios of the two firms, the merged company will be striving for growth and looking to strengthen its position in the relevant market segments. “The merger now having become effective, the MAN Group will be seeking to pool its expertise in large bore diesel engines and power plants with its strengths in compressor and turbine technologies…

MAN Diesel SE and MAN Turbo AG are to work more closely together in future with the aim of forming a merger with each other under corporate law. By combining the product portfolios, the merged company will strive for further growth and a stronger position in its respective market segments. “This will allow the MAN Group to combine the engine and power plant expertise of the Diesel Engines business area with the compressor and turbine technology of the Turbomachinery business area to form a strong Power Engineering unit for the long term,” said Håkan Samuelsson, Chairman of the Executive Board of MAN SE. MAN Diesel provides large-bore diesel engines for use in ships and power plants, while MAN Turbo specializes in the development and construction of compressors, gas and steam turbines.

Common rail diesel technology is reliable, clean, economic, durable – and in the MAN Group it is now available for the engine of a small truck up to a large marine diesel. For service on the high seas the electronic injection system has again been improved. “Now this technology is where we wanted to have it,“ says Fritz Pape, Member of the Executive Board of MAN B&W. This in-house development combines conventional components of existing MAN injection systems with up-to-date hydraulic and electronic elements that have been developed further.

Late last month the MAN Group publicly announced the availability of a new engine which fully embodies the advantages of common rail diesel technology, meaning that it is designed to be particularly reliable, clean, economic and durable. "Now this technology is where we wanted to have it," says Fritz Pape, Member of the Executive Board of MAN B&W. This in-house development combines conventional components of existing MAN injection systems with up-to-date hydraulic and electronic elements that have been developed further. "It was a strategic decision to develop common rail for our engines ourselves in order to do better than what would have been possible with existing, external systems," said Pape. The result is the new engine type 32/40CR.

Effective June 9, MAN B&W Diesel has acquired the Alstom Engines business, and effective immediately the Alstom Diesel engine business was renamed MAN B&W Diesel Ltd. with its headquarters in Stockport, Cheshire. Dr. Hans-J. Schulte, President of MAN B&W Diesel, stated: "We welcome the new British members of the MAN B&W Diesel team to the MAN family. The U.K. company manufactures diesel engines under the Mirrlees Blackstone, Ruston and Paxman brand names. The existing engine programs - which will continue to be strongly marketed according to the company - are complementary to the extensive range of engines in the power bracket between 500 and 68,640 kW being designed and produced by the MAN B&W Diesel Group at its other locations in Europe.

As a bastion of ship production in the under 10,000-dwt-vessel range, the industry in the northern Netherlands continues to demonstrate true global competitiveness in its chosen fields of endeavor. While much of European shipbuilding bewails the intensified onslaught from the Orient, impinging on an ever-greater range of ship types and ever-widening circle of European shipowning communities, the yards and allied firms in the northernmost Dutch provinces are putting down building blocks in new market areas. Key points of the investment-underwritten drive to increase market reach and develop business volume are a push towards larger vessels, up to 20,000-dwt in some cases, and the forging of new relationships with builders in Eastern Europe.

The cruise vessel Black Watch, built in Helsinki in 1972, will be equipped with a completely new MAN B&W Diesel propulsion plant. On April 19, 2005, the Black Watch of the Red Band AS Shipping company, Norway, will arrive at the Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg, where she will be completely renewed within a period of only 57 days, including a 2-day sea trial. Conversion and modernization work is focused on a reduction of the noise and vibration levels, as well as on clearly lower fuel consumption rates of new, state-of-the-art propulsion engines. The shipping company, which is mainly known on the British cruise market, has therefore decided in favor of four new MAN B&W 7L32/40 Diesel engines for the propulsion of the BLACK WATCH.

The supervisory board of MAN B&W Diesel AG, a subsidiary of MAN AG, Munich, has appointed Håkan Samuelsson as its new chairman, effective January 1, 2005. In this position he will follow Dr. Rudolf Rupprecht who resigns as chairman as of December 31, 2004. Samuelsson will also act as “working chairman” as of February 2005 and take over for the time being the responsibilities for the MAN B&W Diesel Group’s overall policies and strategies. Currently chairman of the executive board of MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG, he will become chairman of the executive board of MAN AG as of January 1, 2005, succeeding Dr. Rudolf Rupprecht. After 32 years of service with MAN, Dr. Hans-J. Schulte, Member of the Executive Board of MAN AG (Munich) and Chairman of the MAN B&W Diesel Executive Board, officially retired from professional life today. At the farewell celebration attended by 150 guests, Håkan Samuelsson, Chairman of the Executive Board of MAN AG and Chairman of MAN B&W Diesel AG’s Supervisory Board emphasised: “Thanks to his international experience and his extensive knowledge of the diesel engine markets worldwide, Dr. Schulte has always been able to give fresh impetus to the Executive Board of the MAN Group and has pushed the diesel engine division decisively forward.” At the end of January, Dr. Hans-J. Schulte will retire from professional life.

The MAN B&W Diesel Group and the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) agreed upon comprehensive cooperation with regard to the development and production of large diesel engines. The frame agreement, which was recently signed in Munich, also provides for close cooperation in the purchase and production of components, personnel training and licence production of MAN B&W turbochargers. Signing of the agreement was the focus of a comprehensive programme organised for the visit of the CSIC Top Management to the MAN B&W locations in Copenhagen, Augsburg and Munich. “This agreement will deepen and extend our cooperation.

MAN Diesel has renewed its low-speed license agreements with its Chinese partners. Furthermore the company, which forms the Diesel engine division of the MAN Group, signed a license agreement for a ten year period with the newly established joint venture CSSC-Mitsui Diesel Co, Ltd, known as CMD. The joint venture is owned by the largest Chinese and Japanese low-speed engine builders, Hudong and Mitsui, with the additional participation of CSSC. The renewal of the CSIC/CSOC – MAN Diesel licence agreement with the engine builders Dalian Marine Diesel and Yichang Marine Diesel took place in Beijing, while the licence agreement with CSSC/CSTC and the engine builders Hudong Heavy Machinery and CSSC-Mitsui (CMD) was signed in Shanghai. The Chairman of MAN Diesel’s Executive Board, Dr.

Fritz Pape, Deputy Chairman of the Board of MAN Diesel SE, retired on October 31. Pape has been part of the company since 1966, having spent 13 years as a Member of the Board. His successor, Dr. Georg Pachta-Reyhofen has been in charge of the company since July 1 in his role as Chairman of the Board. He is also a Director of MAN AG, Munich. After his training to become an engine fitter, Fritz Pape studied production engineering at the State School for Mechanical Engineering in Düsseldorf. Following graduation as an engineer in 1966, he began his career as a production engineer at MAN. From 1973 onwards, Pape was responsible for the entire mechanical processing of diesel engines.

At the same time the company will change its name into MAN Diesel SE, headquartered in Augsburg, Germany. By adopting SE status, the Executive Board intends to make the Diesel Engine Division of the MAN Group an even more international player showing a single face to the customer. At the same time, in order to better organize the working of its committees, the Supervisory Board , which is made up of an international team headed by Håkan Samuelsson, has been reduced from twelve to ten members, The Supervisory Board’s parity structure between the capital and the employee side will remain unchanged.

Rising Korean aspirations as to market influence and technological standing could alter the established order in an important segment of the engine business. While MAN B&W announced opening contracts for its new L21/31 design as a marine auxiliary, Hyundai Heavy Industries was preparing to roll-out its first-ever, self-originated engine type targeted at a similar power range. The H21/32 signals the emergence of Hyundai, the world's largest producer of marine diesels, as a designer in its own right. The company's development of the in-house Himsen brand denotes a move towards increased technological self-reliance, given the wholesale dependence up until now on manufacturing licenses from foreign engine firms.
