Ailing Liftboat Crewmember Medevaced in US Gulf

An ailing crewmember was medevaced from a liftboat approximately three miles south of Pecan Island, La., Saturday morning, the U.S. Coast Guard said.The Coast Guard said its watchstanders at Sector New Orleans received a call at approximately 1:12 a.m. from the captain of the vessel requesting assistance to medevac a 42-year-old man on board reportedly having heart-attack-like symptoms.The watchstanders then coordinated the launch of a Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew to assist.Once on scene…

Worker Medevaced from Bulk Carrier Off Louisiana

An ailing shore labor worker was medevaced off an Indian-flagged bulk carrier Thursday near Pointe a la Hache, La., the U.S. Coast Guard said.The Coast Guard said its watchstanders at Sector New Orleans received a call at approximately 10 a.m. stating a man on board Great Eastern's Kamsarmax bulker Jag Arnav was unresponsive due to unknown circumstances.A spokesperson for Great Eastern Shipmanagement said the man is a shore laborer who was not feeling well while performing hatch cleaning at Magnolia anchorage on the Mississippi River.

Safety Insight on Offshore Wind Industry

New safety analysis can be used to harmonize safety on board offshore vessels carrying wind turbine technicians. The Danish Maritime Authority is striving to make the International Maritime Organization (IMO) develop international standards. The Danish Maritime Authority has hosted two workshops with experts from the offshore wind industry at which a safety analysis was made for vessels carrying wind turbine technicians – now, this has resulted in a report. Fleet's Support Capability Gets Sirius Boost

The Royal Australian Navy’s replenishment capability is operating at capacity once again with HMAS Sirius back in the brine after four months of maintenance at Captain Cook Graving Dock, Garden Island. The fleet tanker cut an impressive figure against the city skyline as she sailed out of Sydney Harbour and into the Pacific Ocean for sea trials recently. She will return to Sydney briefly to take on bulk fuel at Gore Cove before commencing her transit home to Rockingham, Western Australia. It will be the first time a Navy tanker has ‘bunkered’ fuel at Gore Cove since HMAS Westralia did so in 1993. The crew of 73 are looking forward to the upcoming increase in pace. “We are excited about getting Sirius back to sea to do our job”, said Ship’s Warrant Officer Dale Young.

Quicker and Easier Man Over Board Retrieval

All lifejackets are fitted with a lifting becket, which in comparison with the size of body in rough seas, is like finding a needle in a haystack. Lifesaver is 3 meters of brightly visible yellow line, spliced into a loop with a triangle at one end. The other end is fitted to the lifting becket in an automatic life jacket. When the life jacket inflates, the Lifesaver floats out onto the water and is much easier and faster for the rescuer onboard to grab with a boathook and secure the casualty to the boat.

Bulgarian Naval Academy Acquires VSTEP Simulators

On the 6th of August 2016, the official opening ceremony for The Centre for Integrated Management and Monitoring of the Coastal Zone was inaugurated by Mr. Boyko Borisov, the Prime Minister of Bulgaria. At the opening ceremony were present the Rector of the Academy, Commodore Prof. DSc Boyan Mednikarov and Deputy Chief of Educational and Scientific Activities, Captain Prof. Dr Kalin Kalinov. Among the official guests were parliament members from the Bulgarian government, representatives of other Bulgarian authorities, members of the military, ambassadors and representatives of the maritime industry. Coast Guard IMSARC Demo a Success

The Irish Coast Guard coordinated a successful Marine Search and Rescue demonstration on Saturday 16th July. The exercise in Moville Co Donegal involved some of Ireland’s principal Search and Rescue resources. Participants included Donegal based volunteer Coast Guard units, the Sligo based Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter, Naval ship LÉ Orla,  Air Corps Casa, RNLI’s new Shannon Class All Weather Lifeboat, Bord Iascaigh Mhara, UK Maritime Coastguard Agency, Irish Water Safety, Mountain Rescue Ireland and the Civil Defence. The event included a series of water based safety demonstrations: “Prevention and adherence to basic safety is the key element in minimising loss of life at sea and on our waterways”, concluded SARs Manager Gerard O’Flynn.

USCG Medevac Man from Sailboat on Lake Huron

U.S. Coast Guard crews conducted a MEDEVAC of a 74-year-old man from a 35-foot sailboat involved in the Bell's Beer Bayview Mackinac Race early Sunday morning on northern Lake Huron. The man's name is not being released by the Coast Guard and there is no video or imagery available for this case. Just before 6:30 a.m., the crew of Coast Guard Cutter Alder, homeported in Duluth, Minnesota, and deployed to assist with the race, was contacted by the sailboat stating that a crew member had lost consciousness for approximately three minutes and had a history of heart issues. Alder diverted to assist and it was determined by the on-call Coast Guard flight surgeon that a MEDEVAC was necessary.

Tall Ship Docked for Repairs

Tall ship Stavros S Niarchos in for general maintenance and repairs

The largest brig to be built in the U.K. in a century sailed into in a Greenock dry dock yesterday for general maintenance and essential winter repairs. The Stavros S Niarchos has arrived at the Garvel Clyde site, which is owned by Aberdeen-based Dales Marine Services, after a Liverpool to Glasgow youth voyage by the Tall Ships Trust. The sail training vessel, which has an 18th Century-designed brig with 18 sails on two masts and was commissioned in 2000, had a youth voyage on board for the journey and will have adults on the return leg.

Rescuers Struggle to Reach Burning Ferry in heavy Seas

Passengers aboard a car ferry that caught fire off the coast of Greece early on Sunday pleaded for help as rescue vessels struggled to approach the burning vessel in high winds and rough seas. The Norman Atlantic, carrying almost 500 passengers and crew and more than 200 vehicles, was 44 nautical miles northwest of the island of Corfu when it sent a distress signal after a fire started in the lower deck, Greek coast guard officials said. close. "We are burning and sinking, no one can save us," Nikos Papatheodosiou told Greek TV by telephone. "Please help us! Don't leave us," he said before hanging up. Cold winter temperatures would make survival in the sea difficult unless rescue came quickly.

Dacon Rescue Scoop Gains Momentum in Offshore Wind

Dacon announced it has again been contracted to deliver its Dacon Rescue Scoop to a service vessel in the offshore wind industry. This is the fifth vessel in a series of carbon fiber SWATH designs that Odfjell Wind AS are building at Danish Yachts, all of which have been equipped with the MOB rescue system, Dacon said. These systems have traditionally been in use on standby vessels that provide rescue capability to oil and gas rigs but are now gaining momentum in the offshore wind industry.

Naval Fleet Review Draws to a Close

Rolls-Royce Subsea Construction Vessel Delivered to Island Offshore

Island Crown is the latest vessel to come from the relationship between Island Offshore and Rolls-Royce. Once again the UT 776 CD has been selected as the basis for a vessel to meet some special offshore requirements. Over the past few years, the Norwegian shipowner has added several batches of the UT 776 platform supply vessel to its fleet, including two fuelled with LNG. This time around, the design brief was a vessel that will usually spend its time connected to an offshore platform, acting as a hotel for people working on the platform.

This Day in Coast Guard History – October 13

1775-This is the date that the Navy recognizes as it's "official" birthday. The United States Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy, which the Continental Congress established on 13 October 1775 by authorizing the procurement, fitting out, manning, and dispatch of two armed vessels to cruise in search of munitions ships supplying the British Army in America. The legislation also established a Naval Committee to supervise the work. All together, the Continental Navy numbered some fifty ships over the course of the war, with approximately twenty warships active at its maximum strength. After the American War for Independence, Congress sold the surviving ships of the Continental Navy and released the seamen and officers.

USCG Searches for Man Over Board

The Coast Guard is searching for a 26-year-old Myanmarese crewmember reported to have fallen overboard from the 792-ft container ship Cap Gilbert approximately 450 miles south of Adak Island Jan. 25. The Coast Guard 17th District command center in Juneau was notified of the missing man at approximately 8:20 p.m. and issued an urgent marine information broadcast requesting the assistance of any vessels in the area. A Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules aircraft crew was launched at approximately 10:16 p.m. from Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak. The HC-130 aircraft arrived on scene at approximately 1 a.m. joining the crew of the Cap Gilbert in the search. No signs of the man were found over night. A second Hercules aircrew departed Air Station Kodiak at about 8 a.m. Jan.

This Day in Coast Guard Hisory – Oct. 13

1883 - Between 4 and 5 o’clock in the afternoon, a small sailboat, owned at West Hampton, New York, capsized In crossing the bay with one man on board. Three of the crew of the Petunk Station (Third District) sprang into a skiff, rowed out, rescued the man, and towed the boat ashore. 1988 - The first U.S. merchant marine World War II veterans received their Coast Guard issued discharge certificates.  Congress gave the merchant mariners veterans' status and tasked the Coast Guard with administering the discharges. 1995 - The cutter Ida Lewis was launched, the first of the new 175-foot Keeper class buoy tenders. Kongsberg Launches New Simulation Software

Kongsberg Maritime launched of Polaris 4.4.0, the latest version of its Polaris bridge simulation architecture. simulation systems or multi-channel full mission simulators based on real-life bridge consoles and layouts.
