Chinese Yard Orders ABB Propulsion System for Giant Offshore Wind Installation Vessel

China's Yantai CIMC Raffles Shipyard has ordered an integrated power, automation, and propulsion system from ABB for a newbuild offshore wind installation jack-up vessel (JUV) being built for the Dutch marine contractor Van Oord.The vessel, Boreas, is due for delivery to the owner in the second part of 2024, and it is said that it will be one of the largest and most technologically advanced hybridized units of the type in operation, measuring 175 meters in length. Rolls-Royce Plots Further Ship Intelligence R&D

Rolls-Royce has announced the latest stage in its research and development plans to make remote and autonomous shipping a reality and reap the benefits of increasing digitalization in the marine industry. The company said it is looking to develop partnerships and opportunities with other organizations around the world to, create the capability, competencies and jobs to supply the technology and components required. Today, the latest part of that program has been confirmed with the announcement, in Finland, of a significant research grant by Tekes – the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation.

Reforma Pemex Now Under BSM Management

Following a two-year period of plan approval and newbuild supervision services provided by Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement’s project focused business, Schulte Marine Concept, BSM's Mexico based Ship Management Centre has commenced management of Reforma Pemex, the first of two offshore ‘flotel’ accommodation vessels owned by Petroleos Mexicanos International (PMI) and chartered to the Mexican National Oil Company Petroleos Mexicanos (PEMEX). Commencing operations from the beginning of January 2017, Reforma Pemex set sail in late November from the Barrera Shipyard in Vigo, Spain en route to the Gulf of Mexico where she will host up to 700 PEMEX personnel working on offshore platform fields in the Campeche area.

Port of Portland Chooses NetSuite Software

NetSuite Inc., provider of cloud-based financials/ERP and omnichannel commerce software suites, announced that Victoria's Port of Portland has gone live with NetSuite. Port of Portland replaced its existiny systems for financial; shipping, accounts payable and receivable; payroll and maintenance, projects and operations, with a single instance of NetSuite for financials, payroll, project management, asset management and shipping. Port of Portland said it was able to improve the efficiencies of its financials and project management capabilities with NetSuite, as well as streamline its ship scheduling process to support its growing customer base of exporters.

Keppel Details FY 2011 Results

The Directors of Keppel Corporation Limited advise the following unaudited results of the Group for the full year ended 31 December 2011. The FY 2011 Report Card and the Address by Mr Choo Chiau Beng, Chief Executive Officer, are below. I am pleased to announce that 2011 was yet another record year for Keppel Corporation. Our net profit grew by 14% to a new high of nearly $1.5 billion. This is the fifth year running that our net profit has surpassed the $1 billion mark. Also for the fifth consecutive year, our Return on Equity has remained above 20%. Economic Value Added has also increased to $1,024 million for the year. With these strong results, the Board of Directors will be recommending a total distribution to shareholders of 43 cents per share for the whole year.

Rising Demand for Technical Shipping Candidates

The latest report by shipping industry recruiters Faststream reveals that there is a rising global demand for ex-seafarers in shore based positions. In its Maritime Employment Review - Technical Shipping published today (20 May 2011), Faststream reveals an upsurge in candidate placements in 2010/11. Globally speaking, the average age of a technical shipping candidate in the past 12 months was 42 and the average salary of £55K (USD $89K / SGD $111K). Typically, the company was able to find and place a candidate within nine weeks.

Tognum Expands Production Network

Friedrichshafen, 21 March 2011. The specialist for propulsion and power solutions Tognum is expanding its production capacity in Europe. KPI Bridge Oil, a global bunker broker and trader, has appointed Jesper Rasmussen as Senior Key Account Manager in its London office. Rasmussen, a Danish national, has management and sales experience in the global maritime industry and speaks Danish, English, German, Norwegian and some Dutch and Greek. Rasmussen holds a degree from Copenhagen Business School and has completed various business courses at Management Centre Europe in Brussels and Cranfield University in the UK.
