On March 29, 2021, President Biden announced his ambitious plan to deploy 30 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind power – enough energy to power 10 million U.S. homes – by 2030. US' MARAD Announces Grants to Boost Supply Chain Efficiency

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) awarded nearly $12 million in grants to eight marine highway projects across the nation under the United States Marine Highway Program (USMHP). Voestalpine Böhler Welding Germany GmbH has become the first manufacturer worldwide to be awarded a Type Approval certificate from classification society DNV, for their solid wire 3Dprint AM 70/I1 feedstock. ABS Approves 3D Printed Spare Parts After Tanker Trial

Parts fabricated by additive manufacturing (AM) – also known as 3D printing – and installed on an oil tanker for operational testing have been validated to be in good working condition, marking a significant step for the technology's implementation in the marine industry.The project involving ABS, ConocoPhillips Polar Tankers, Sembcorp Marine Ltd and 3D Metalforge started in February 2021 with the fabrication and lab-testing of functional additive manufactured parts, which were then installed on board the oil tanker Polar Endeavour.

3D Printed Parts Installed On Oil Tanker

Additive manufactured parts have been built, tested and installed on board the U.S.-flagged oil tanker Polar EndeavorTraditionally, parts used in shipbuilding and repair are manufactured via casting or forging techniques. For this project, a consortium consisting of ABS, Sembcorp Marine, 3D Metalforge and ConocoPhillips Polar Tankers Inc. DNV GL: First Class Guideline for Additive Manufacturing

DNV GL has published the first classification guideline for the use of additive manufacturing (AM) in the maritime and oil amid gas industries. The guideline is designed to help manufacturers and sub-suppliers of materials, parts and components, service suppliers and end users adopting AM technologies, by ensuring that the parts or components created by an AM process and the materials from which they are created have the same level of quality assurance as traditionally manufactured products.

CSSC Launches New Marine Service Business

China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) said it has formally launched a new business CSSC Marine Service Co., Ltd, to coincide with the inauguration of its new logistics center within the Yangshang free trade zone, Shanghai. The inauguration was marked with a ceremony on June 30, 2017, attended by more than 150 industry representatives from ship owning, managing and operating companies, along with key cooperation partners ABB, MAN PrimServ and WinGD. Able to accommodate more than 20,000 kinds of original small parts including fuel injection equipment, piston rings, pipes, flaps and valves, and large parts such as cylinder liners, covers and piston crowns. Shippers Want Timeline for Emissions Reduction

APL Extends West Coast 5 Service

APL announced today that its West Coast 5 (WC5) service will be serving the additional ports of Corinto, Acajutla and Puerto Quetzal in Central America, enhancing direct connectivity between the Port of Los Angeles and the Latin American markets. APL said that the WC5 service has been refined to better support trade activities between Central America and the United States (U.S). As the industries of Central America continue to be key exporters of agricultural produce and commodities; as well as manufactured products such as clothes and textiles to the U.S., APL’s enhanced WC5 service will enable a more direct access between the two regions. Meanwhile, shippers can expect to benefit from shorter transit times, compared to trans-shipment options that involve land transportation via Mexico.

Freight volumes in the United States have fallen year on year for the first time since 2012 and before that the recession of 2009, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The total volume of freight moved by road, rail, pipeline, inland waterways and as air cargo in November 2015 was 1.1 percent lower than in the corresponding month a year earlier. Freight demand growth has been slowing since the start of last year but the slowdown intensified in the second half and November marked the first time that year-on-year growth turned negative.

U.S. Seaports: Cargo Volumes Rise 3.1%

Seaports are seeing a steady rise in waterborne cargo volumes according to new numbers from U.S. Army Corps of Engineer’s report. Overall, 2014 freight tonnages increased 3.1 percent over 2013 totals. The Corps of Engineers’ Waterborne Commerce Statistics Center tracks the commercial movement of U.S. foreign and domestic cargo and vessels. Sluggish Freight Movements Have Downside Risks

Global distillate markets remain heavily oversupplied but the glut will not clear unless the world economy avoids recession and there is a renewed acceleration in freight demand. Recent data have been mixed. The consumer side of the U.S. economy appears to be strong but the industrial side is still struggling, and in the rest of the world growth appears to be slowing. U.S. freight movements picked up at the start of the year but demand for moving manufactured products and raw materials across the country remains sluggish. Combined freight movements by road, rail, barge, pipeline and aircraft increased in December and January, the first time freight has increased for two consecutive months since November 2014 (http://tmsnrt.rs/1pa8DbM).

Bosch Rexroth Celebrates Silver

In November 2014, Bosch Rexroth celebrated the 25th anniversary of its Fountain Inn, SC hydraulics production facility. After undergoing an expansion in 2013, the location is home to the company’s largest hydraulics manufacturing facility in the Americas. Opened in 1989, the facility was originally made up of a single 250,000 sq. ft. building and specialized in manufacturing hydraulic pumps. Now, the Fountain Inn facility is more than double its original size in order to better serve its customers in the region and beyond. Rexroth last year converted an existing industrial warehouse into a state-of-the-art manufacturing and assembly facility, bringing the whole campus to a total of 510,000 sq. ft. The plant occupies more than 100 acres of land and employs more than 700 associates.
