Birdon, a defense contractor specializing in maritime solutions, announced it has expanded its U.S. Board of Outside Directors through the recent election of two members with extensive backgrounds with U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard shipbuilding and ship repair. Construction Begins on UK’s Next Warship
Construction of the U.K. Royal Navy’s second new Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) has begun, marked by a ceremony led by Defense Secretary, Michael Fallon, at BAE Systems in Glasgow. NNS Supports SCA Welding Education Program
Huntington Ingalls Industries informs that its Newport News Shipbuilding division has donated training materials to the Southern Carolina Regional Development Alliance (SCA) for a welding program in Allendale County, S.C. The SCA's Advanced Manufacturing Skills Training Program has already provided 47 students with welding training. The SCA is now working to expand the program by implementing curricula developed and used by Newport News Shipbuilding. In addition to the training materials presented to the SCA today, a shipyard welding instructor will work with the training facility to implement the curricula. Wärtsilä will begin manufacturing propellers in China. Wärtsilä's wholly owned company Wärtsilä Propulsion and Zhenjiang CME Co. Ltd (CME), wholly owned by the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), have today signed a contract to establish a joint venture company. The company will be 55%-owned by Wärtsilä and 45%-owned by CME and its name will be Wärtsilä-CME Zhenjiang Propeller Co. Ltd. "China's shipbuilding industry is growing rapidly and 15% of new ships are currently built in the country. China also is developing into a significant production country for ship equipment. The propeller manufacturing in China is Wärtsilä's first step in developing its production in this growing market", says Wärtsilä's President and CEO Ole Johansson.

Savi Technology and Oneseal to Develop Revolutionary Electronic Bolt Seal
Savi Technology announced at today's opening of the U.S. Maritime Security Expo in New York that they will jointly develop and market a disposable low-cost electronic bolt seal that automatically transmits alerts over radio frequencies when locking mechanisms on cargo containers are tampered with or violated. The new electronic seal will combine EchoPoint, Savi's latest, sixth-generation, active radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, with OneSeal's design and manufacturing skills for high-security locks. The partners plan to introduce a widely affordable product by early next year that will dramatically improve the security and management of cargo containers moving throughout the global supply chain by ship, rail and truck.
