Pelagus 3D and Doosan Enerbility Forge Additive Manufacturing Alliance

ABS Approves 3D Printed Spare Parts After Tanker Trial

Parts fabricated by additive manufacturing (AM) – also known as 3D printing – and installed on an oil tanker for operational testing have been validated to be in good working condition, marking a significant step for the technology's implementation in the marine industry.The project involving ABS, ConocoPhillips Polar Tankers, Sembcorp Marine Ltd and 3D Metalforge started in February 2021 with the fabrication and lab-testing of functional additive manufactured parts, which were then installed on board the oil tanker Polar Endeavour.

Tech File: 3D Printed Prop for French Warship

Naval Group manufactured a new-generation propeller via a metal 3D printing process, mounted on a tripartite minehunter.This propeller is 2.5-m in diameter, supported by five 200-kg blades. The equipment left the workshops of the Naval Group site of Nantes-Indret in October 2020 for the site of Brest in order to be mounted on the ship's propeller shaft. As part of its major technical stop, the assembly was transferred to the submarine base to be mounted on the intermediate shaft of the Andromède in November.

SSI Hires Holder for US Sales

SSI has hired CAD/CAM specialist Robert Holder as part of its sales force in the U.S. market. According to SSI, the hiring is intended to meet the expanding demand for SSI's design and manufacturing solutions in the shipbuilding and offshore industries. Holder, SSI's new Sales Account Executive for Enterprise Solutions, will help businesses assess SSI’s expanded capabilities, including the expanded ShipConstructor CAD/CAM product line, EnterprisePlatform product line and new pricing options that SSI now offers. He will be based in the Gulf Coast Region but will provide technical consultation to the shipbuilding and offshore industry throughout the United States.

Port of Cleveland Europe Express Service Benefits AT&F

Large scale welding & fabrication firm, AT&F, headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, says that the new Port of Cleveland to Antwerp service is a welcome addition to the service lines for AT&F’s European customers. Service direct from Cleveland is four days faster than from U.S. East Coast ports, and at a lower cost. “This regular service coincides with AT&F’s export strategy to deliver around the world the large scale products and components for heavy industrial markets that have been the cornerstone of our business in the U.S. for decades. Access to direct ocean shipping allows us to deliver easily what once took special trucking and rail to deliver to East and West Coast ports prior to loading for overseas deliveries,” stated Michael Forde Ripich, AT&F’s president.

Samsung Uses DELMIA for Digital Shipbuilding Plant

Dassault Systèmes (DS) announced that the shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has built a simulation-based digital shipyard using DELMIA digital manufacturing technology, enabling the company to successfully establish a real-time supply chain network for collaborative production. With DELMIA, SHI’s Korea-based Geoje Shipyard is able to simulate design and engineering processes and digitally manage its facilities, procedures, and engineering schedules by shipbuilding in a virtual environment. “In the future, Simulation-Based Manufacturing (SBM) will play a pivotal role in strengthening the competitiveness of manufacturing by applying IT technologies,” noted Hwang Gyu-Ok, general manager of the Information System Group for SHI.

EDS Issue Statement on ALSTOM Announcement

EDS today gobal specialist in energy and transport infrastructure, to provide information technology (IT) infrastructure and applications services. Once signed, the contract may rank among the largest IT agreements in the history of the manufacturing and energy industries. Under the outsourcing agreement, EDS would manage ALSTOM's IT infrastructure and applications in 14 countries -- Belgium, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK and U.S. Approximately 1,300 ALSTOM employees in these countries would be transferred to EDS. The EDS agreement is expected to reduce ALSTOM's IT costs while delivering improved operational efficiency and higher IT service and quality levels.
