Gondan Cuts First Steel for New Northern Lighthouse Board Vessel

Spain's GONDAN Shipbuilders announced it held a steel cutting ceremony marking the start of construction on a new vessel it is building for the Northern Lighthouse Board (NLB), a non-departmental public body responsible for marine navigation aids around coastal areas for Scotland and the Isle of Man.The NLB, which has been responsible for the management of lights, buoys and beacons in the region since 1786, plays an essential role in safe navigation.The new hybrid-powered vessel…

Gondán to Build Hybrid Buoy Tender for Scotland

The Northern Lighthouse Board (NLB), the General Lighthouse Authority for Scotland and the Isle of Man announced the award of a £51.8 million contract to Spanish shipyard Astilleros Gondán S.A, for the build of a hybrid powered buoy tender vessel to support its vital safety service to mariners.The tender includes a commitment to place over £2 million of contracts with U.K. suppliers with a requirement for any contract over £25,000 to be advertised in the U.K. As part of the deal Gondán will also create a special fully funded internship program for up to 15 U.K.

ADNOC L&S Acquires Ultramax Bulk Carrier

ADNOC Logistics & Services (L&S), the maritime arm of Abu Dhabi's national oil firm ADNOC, has acquired an Ultramax bulk carrier Al Karama. The purchase follows the acquisition of two Ultramax carriers earlier this year.The Al Karama bulk carrier vessel was built in 2019 and has a deadweight of 64,000 metric tons, ADNOC said. According to data from VesselsValue, the vessel was previously known as Isabella Manx, owned by MX Bulk.According to ADNOC L&S, the bulk carrier will immediately be deployed on key ADNOC L&S trading routes…

Isle of Man Ship Registry’s QUALSHIP 21 Status Confirmed by USCG

The Isle of Man Ship Registry has retained its place within the United States Coast Guard’s QUALSHIP 21 program, designed to recognize foreign-flagged vessels that maintain the highest safety and quality standards.Isle of Man Ship Registry director Cameron Mitchell said continued inclusion in the scheme through to July 2021 was great news for the registry and its clients, representing further independent verification of the quality of the Manx fleet.Entry into the program is based on data gathered during Port State Control inspections in the United States.

Coastguard Responds to Sinking Vessel Off England

At 4: 30 a.m. Falmouth Coastguard received a mayday call from sinking fishing vessel Nemo, 15 miles south of Salcombe, England.Falmouth Coastguard received all the relevant information from the radio operator on the fishing vessel who reported their location and that they had two people on board and were taking on water and listing. HM Coastguard sent the Coastguard helicopter from Newquay and the RNLI all weather lifeboat from Salcombe and made a broadcast to vessels in the area. Several large merchant vessels and two other fishing vessels called Manx Ranger and Celtic Dawn responded to the Coastguard broadcast and went to help; they were able to find and intercept the Nemo using AIS.

RV Polarstern Starts Arctic Season

Scientists from the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) are setting out with the research vessel Polarstern towards Spitsbergen, to use newly developed equipment in the Arctic Ocean. Autonomous instruments on the seabed, in the water column and in the air will complement the long-term measurements of the deep-sea research group. In this way researchers can analyse the climatic changes in the Arctic and their impact on the fauna in the future with higher temporal and spatial resolution. For the first time the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) "Tramper" will be set on its own for a year on the Arctic seabed. "The newly developed device is to measure oxygen along the depth gradients on a weekly basis.

Liam Means Business for Shipping Cluster

Enterprising student Liam Finch has been putting his summer days to good use by working on an important survey for the Isle of Man Shipping Association (IOMSA). Liam, 20, is involved in a project aiming to shed light on the value of the marine industry to the island. He has based himself at the premises of Bibby Ship Management Group Ltd on the Isle of Man Business Park. Bibby commercial director Mark Robertshaw is also vice chairman of the IOMSA and welcomed Liam onboard to undertake the work. Liam, from Derbyhaven, is studying Viking Studies at the University of Nottingham. The scheme itself takes place during the summer over a period of six to 12 weeks depending on the size of the project and needs of the business / organisation.

Bibby Ship Management 'Girl Power'

Intrepid trekkers – Jess Kramer, Sarah Ryan, Nicky Davenport and Sandra Corrigan have just arrived home from a trip of a lifetime. All four Bibby Ship Management (BSM) Isle of Man employees took part in the Bibby Line Group ‘Giving Something Back’ Dalai Lama Trek in India, in October. The five day trek saw the team reach an altitude of 3,500 meters, camping in some extreme weather, however with such a fantastic support crew keeping the team firmly on the ground the trip was a great success.

Tasmania’s Manx Connection

When the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company purchased its latest Incat-built high speed ferry for service on the Irish Sea it continued a relationship established 22 years ago. In 1987, Incat’s chairman Robert Clifford was invited by naval architects Hart Fenton, acting for then Steam Packet shareholder Sea Containers, to visit the Isle of Man with a view of building a high speed craft to serve the island’s needs. Three years later, in November 1990 the first generation Incat car ferry Hoverspeed Great Britain arrived in the island for trials.

Manannan Arrives in the Isle of Man

The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company’s latest Incat fast ferry has arrived in her new home waters after completion of a major refit in the United Kingdom. high speed craft on the Irish Sea with greater cruising speed and increased vehicle and passenger capacity than the vessel she replaces. Onboard facilities have been enhanced to include lounges, various bars and eateries, and pre-bookable executive seating which equal or better anything found on similar vessels operating around the British Isles.
