Ann Phillips Confirmed as Next MARAD Administrator

The U.S. Senate on Tuesday confirmed Ann C. Phillips as Administrator of the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD), filling a position that has been left vacant at the Department of Transportation (DOT) since January 2021. Phillips was confirmed by a vote of 75-22.Phillips, a retired U.S. Navy rear admiral, takes over as head of the DOT's maritime agency amid continued shipping and supply chain disruption as well as historic levels of government funding for maritime and port infrastructure projects. She succeeds Mark Buzby, who resigned from the role in the wake of the insurrection at the U.S.

Jones Act Fleet a Catalyst for Growth Says Jaenichen

At the inaugural recent Tradewinds Jones Act Forum, MARAD Acting Administrator Paul 'Chip'  Jaenichen discussed the changes affecting the coastwise U.S.-flag maritime industry -- also known as the Jones Act fleet. Since its enactment, the Jones Act continues to ensure a level playing field for U.S. vessels moving cargo within the nation. The Act keeps skilled American mariners employed aboard American ships by requiring that products moved between U.S. ports be carried by U.S. vessels manned by U.S. crews.

Plan to Clean Up Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet

U.S. Transportation Deputy Secretary John D. Porcari announced that the Department’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) will begin to clean up and recycle obsolete vessels at the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet (SBRF). MARAD has awarded the first contracts for the removal and recycling of two WWII-era cargo ships currently moored in Suisun Bay, Calif. – the first ships to be disposed from the fleet since January 2007. “The Obama Administration is committed to good environmental stewardship, and these deteriorating vessels pose a risk to the marine ecosystem in Suisun Bay,” said Deputy Secretary Porcari. “We can maintain our national defense sealift assets at the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet with a much smaller footprint on the surrounding environment.

Waterways Council Praises Schubert

Waterways Council, Inc. (WCI), the national public policy organization that advocates for a modern and well-maintained system of ports and inland waterways, today praised the three-and-a-half year tenure of U.S. Maritime Administrator (MarAd) Captain William G. Schubert, who announced his resignation, effective February 12. Throughout his service to MarAd, Captain Schubert met regularly with WCI in Washington, DC, and devoted untold time and attention to the issues facing the inland waterways industry. More Ships to Leave Ghost Fleet

Two more ships are leaving the James River, headed for disposal facilities in Virginia and Maryland, in what has become a regular occurrence since the Bush Administration took over management of the nation’s ship disposal program five years ago, the U.S. Maritime Administration announced. The Howard W. Gilmore is scheduled to leave the James River Reserve Fleet at Fort Eustis on Thursday, making it the 50th ship to leave the river since January 1, 2001. It is one of the last World War II-vintage ships still at the fleet, which is good news for the ship disposal program, according to John Jamian, MARAD’s Acting Administrator. In a news conference at the fleet site today, Jamian said, “Our disposal efforts can keep moving to newer ships, which bring better prices in the scrap steel market.

The US Maritime Administration (MARAD) posted the biography of Ms. Julie A. Nelson. Ms. Nelson is the Chief Counsel of MARAD. She is also the Acting Deputy Administrator.
