Coast Guard Recognizes Industry's Environmental Excellence

The U.S. Coast Guard announced the award recipients for the 2012 Biennial Rear Admiral William M. Benkert, Marine Environmental Protection Award for Excellence at the American Petroleum Institute Tanker Conference in Orlando, Fla. The winner of the Osprey award went to APL Co. Pte. Ltd. based out of Singapore in the large vessel category. The winners for the Gold award went to AEP River Operations based out of St. Louis and Holland America based out of Seattle in the foreign vessel category. Ingram Marine Group based out of Nashville, Tenn., Matson Navigation based out of Oakland, Calif., and Marathon Petroleum Co. based out of Tampa, Fla., were winners in the large vessel category. Winners for the Silver award in the large vessel category went to Maersk Line Ltd. based out of Baltimore.

WCI Reflects on Inland Waterways Industry in 2006

As the inland waterways industry looks back on 2006 and forward to 2007, Waterways Council, Inc. • President Bush’s FY 2007 proposed budget requested a record level of federal funding for 11 Inland Waterways Trust Fund (IWTF)-financed projects. The budget request proposed FY ’07 spending of $394 million for Inland Waterways Trust Fund financed projects, of which $197 million would come from the dedicated Inland Waterways Trust Fund. The remainder would come from general treasury funds, as required under current law. The President’s FY ‘07 budget request is the highest funding recommendation for IWTF funded projects since cost-sharing legislation was enacted into law in 1986.

Coast Guard Environmental Awards

The US Coast Guard announced the winners of the Rear Admiral William M. Benkert Marine Environmental Protection Awards for 2006. In the large business vessels operations category, the winners are Ocean Shipholdings of Houston; Marathon Petroleum Co. of Ashland, Kentucky; and Matson Navigation Co. of Oakland. In the large business facility operator category, the winners are Dow Chemical Co. of Freeport, Texas; BP Cooper River of Wando, South Carolina; Odjfell Terminals of Houston; , and Todd Shipyard of Seattle. In the foreign business vessel operator category, the winner is BP Shipping of the United Kingdom. In the small business vessel operations category, the winner is US Shipping Partners of Edison, New Jersey.

GOM Oil Industry Starts Comeback

Following a nearly complete shutdown of the oil and gas business in the Gulf of Mexico in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, signs indicate a comeback is starting, slow but steady. According to a Reuters report, oil and gas operations recovered slowly on Wednesday, with oil companies struggling to contact all of their workers and assess damage to rigs. Refinery progress was slow but steady. Three of eight refineries that Katrina completely shut have returned either full or partially, including Marathon Petroleum Co. LLC's large 245,000 barrels per day (bpd) plant in Garyville, Louisiana. Offshore, oil and gas production has also been on the rise after Katrina shut nearly all output.
