Finland's marine engine and equipment maker Wärtsilä said Friday it would deliver the steerable and tunnel thrusters for two new wind farm turbine installation vessels being built for the China Three Gorges Corporation (CTGC), a China state-owned power company. The ships will serve China’s expanding offshore wind power sector. The orders were placed by CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding Co, the yard building a 2000-ton wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV), and by China Merchants Heavy Industry (Jiangsu) Co, the yard building a 3000-ton heavy lift vessel.

German shipowner Oldendorff Carriers revealed on Tuesday that earlier this year it ordered two 61,300 dwt Ultramax newbuilds from Dalian Cosco Kawasaki Ship Engineering Co Ltd (DACKS) for delivery July 2022.The 61,300 Ultramaxes are of the Kawasaki eco design, of which Oldendorff had previously built nine units at DACKS and sister yard NACKS until 2019. Workers at Croatia's largest shipbuilding group Uljanik on Monday held their second strike in less than two months, this time over unpaid salary for September.In late August, the workers downed tools because of uncertainty over payments for July and August. Marine Design & Research Institute of China (MARIC), a subsidiary company of China State Shipbuilding Corporation group (CSSC), has signed a licence agreement with Lloyd's Register (LR) for use of their ShipRight FastTrack software. ShipRight FastTrack assists ship designers with the increased requirements demanded in Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Under the latest IACS and Classification Rules the scope for FEA requirements is increasing and initial structural designers need to spend more time on FEA as a result. Time savings can be made with the use of this software that can generate the qualified FE mesh model quickly from 2D/3D plans without the need for excessive and expensive human intervention.

ABS joined the Unmanned Cargo Ship Development Alliance to work with industry partners, including class organizations, shipyards, equipment manufacturers and designers to advance autonomous shipping. DNV GL signed a newbuilding classification agreement with Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (SWS) for the classification of three 20,000 TEU ultra large container ships (ULCS) for COSCO Container Lines Co., Ltd. (COSCON). The first Wärtsilä low-speed two-stroke dual-fuel (DF) engine destined for a commercial application has reportedly completed its Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) at a Chinese licensee of Winterthur Gas & Diesel (WinGD), the Switzerland-based designer, developer and licensor of Wärtsilä brand low-speed two-stroke engines. The engine is a five cylinder, 50 cm bore 5RT-flex50DF built by Yuchai Marine Power Co., Ltd. (YCMP) at its factory in Doumen, Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province, in the South of the People’s Republic of China.

Lomar Corporation, a Libra Group company, has again added to its fleet of container ships with the purchase of three vessels plus an order for up to four new buildings from the Yangzijiang Shipyard, says a company press release. The new vessels are the latest ‘widebeam’ specification with a nominal intake of 2,700 TEU and are designed by the Marine Design & Research Institute of China (MARIC). They will feature the very latest eco-fuel-efficient ‘GType’ engines which meet current emissions regulations. These ships are notable for having a very high reefer intake (600 FEU) and a higher than normal homogeneous intake of 2,300 TEU at 14 tonnes. Furthermore, the reduced overall length of the vessels makes them ideal for ports with an LOA restriction.

The new generation of 10,000 TEU container vessels contracted in China by Seaspan represents major improvements in energy efficiency, cargo capacity, operational efficiency and emission reductions. The new features have been developed in a collaboration between Seaspan, the Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group, MARIC and DNV. The order for seven 10,000 TEU container vessels plus 18 options which was signed in Shanghai on June 8, 2011 is the biggest ever container contract entered into in China. The vessels will be built to DNV class. The improvements due to new design features are substantial.

Waigaoqiao-controlled Shanghai Jiangnan Changxing Heavy Industry has signed a shipbuilding contract with CSSC Shipping (Hong Kong) to build three 16,000 TEU ships, the largest ever built by Chinese yards, reports China Logistics Portal. Jointly designed by Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding and CSSC-affilated Marine Design & Research Institute of China (MARIC), two of the ships will be built at Jiangnan Changxing Heavy Industry and one will be built at Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding. International classification society Bureau Veritas will class three Ultra-Large Container Ships (ULCSs) to be built for China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) and chartered to French operator CMA CGM. The ships are due for delivery in 2015. The 16,000 teu vessels will be the largest container ships built in China to date. One will be built at the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS) yard, and the other two at Shanghai Jiangnan Changxing Heavy Industry, part of which came under the management of SWS this year.

Seaspan Saver, a 10,000 TEU container vessel is setting new standards in container ship design. MARIN and Marine Design and Research Institute of China (MARIC) developed the hull lines of this unique vessel, which has been entirely designed with a low operational cost profile in mind. Canadian owner Seaspan requested a hull form that facilitates very low fuel consumption in the operational speed range, but at the same time it had to be able to keep an acceptable top speed. This approach is in stark contrast to previous ideas, which have focused on having the highest possible top speed.
