Top Ships Adds Tanker to Fleet

Top Ships Inc, which owns and operates tanker vessels worldwide, said that it took delivery of the 50,000 dwt newbuilding product/chemical tanker M/T Eco Marina Del Ray.According to the international owner and operator of modern, fuel efficient "ECO" tanker vessels currently focusing on the transportation of petroleum products, Eco Marina Del Ray is constructed at the Hyundai Mipo shipyard in South Korea.The Greece-based company also said that the vessel is scheduled to commence its five-year charter employment with Cargill on March 18, 2019.The ship-owning company has recently concluded Financing Agreements with a major Chinese leasing company…

Two Saved in Multiagency Search

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) reported that a multiagency response lead to the rescue of two men after their boat capsized outside Marina Del Rey Harbor, Feb. 17, 2014. Search and rescue watchstanders from Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles/Long Beach received two reports of red distress flares near Marina Del Rey Harbor from a Good Samaritan and a sailing vessel returning to Marina Del Rey from Catalina Island at approximately 6 p.m. Using the information provided by the good Samaritans, such as elevation of the flare and angle of observation, watchstanders determined a likely location of origin and then issued an urgent marine information broadcast to which Marina Del Rey Harbor Patrol and Bay Watch responded.

U.S. Seeks Death Penalty for Three Somali Yacht Hijackers

Federal prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty against three Somalis charged with murder in the fatal shooting of four Americans aboard a hijacked yacht last year. Ahmed Muse Salad, Abukar Osman Beyle and Shani Nurani Shiekh Abrar could also face the death penalty on numerous other charges related to the February, 2011 hijacking. They include hostage taking resulting in death, violence against maritime navigation resulting in death and kidnapping resulting in death. In total, 22 of the 26 counts the defendants are charged with are death-eligible offenses. The decision to seek the death penalty is made by U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder. Prosecutors were required to tell the court if they planned to seek the death penalty before the Somalis’ trial started.

Denison Yacht Sales Adds to its Team of Brokers

Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Marina Del Ray, Calif. - Denison Yacht Sales, a full-service global yacht brokerage and yacht charter firm, recently hired eight new yacht brokers and a charter fleet manager. The new hires will expand the company's presence at its Florida and California offices. Joining the Fort Lauderdale brokerage are Skip Denison, Juan Pasch, Peter Quintal, and Gene Echols. Pasch will specifically be assisting in the sale of new Beneteau G.T.'s. New brokers to the California location include Dave Millett, Rick Peters, John Zagorski and Ed Gillespie.

Kvichak Marine Delivers

Kvichak Marine recently delivered a 40-ft. Fast Response fireboat to the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACFD). Designed by Jensen Maritime Consultants of Seattle, the fireboat has a beam of 13.5 ft. and is powered by twin Caterpillar 3126B engines coupled to Twin Disc MG-5075A gears, which provide a speed of ~27 knots. To optimize vessel control and firefighting capacity, LACFD chose a Cummins 6BTA5.9-M3 dedicated fire pump engine, directly coupled to a Hale 80-FC 2400 GPM pump. A Stang fire monitor provides 1000 gpm of water flow and the fireboat has a 50-gallon AR firefighting foam system. "Our mission is to protect and ensure the safety of the Marina del Ray community," said Chief Barry Nugent.

In addition to continual patrol use, this vessel is also fully equipped for search and rescue missions and has fire fighting capabilities. The boat will be assigned to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Marina del Rey Station.
