NYK, ABS, WinGD Working on Battery-Hybrid System to Cut GHG Emissions from Ships

NYK and NYK Group company MTI Co., Ltd. (“MTI”), together with the American Bureau of Shipping (“ABS”) and Winterthur Gas & Diesel Ltd. ("WinGD"), have started joint research for optimization of ship design by utilizing a battery-hybrid system to aid ship propulsion and thus reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from vessels.A vessel’s main-engine revolutions may increase significantly when a vessel tries to maintain its sailing speed during strong waves and winds.This phenomenon is called “load fluctuation.” The shaft generator may also increase the burden on the main engine.

ABS Class for First Taiwan-built Offshore Installation Vessel

Marine classification society American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) will provide classification services to the first floating heavy lift and installation vessel to be built in Taiwan.The vessel named the Green Jade has been commissioned by CDWE, a joint venture between Taiwanese company CSBC and Belgian offshore contractor DEME, and will be built at CSBC in Taiwan for delivery in 2022 for deployment in the region’s offshore wind market.“This is a key development for the region’s offshore wind capability and for the Taiwanese shipbuilding industry and we are delighted to be able to support it…

LR Chalks Out Energy Growth Strategy

Wärtsilä Environmental Seal Systems First to Gain Recognition

Wärtsilä has received an important service level recognition for its Wärtsilä Airguard and Wärtsilä Oceanguard propeller shaft sealing systems from Lloyd's Register. Cummins Launches QSK60 Power Emergency Genset

Cummins announced the latest addition to the C Power product line, the QSK60 C Power (CP) emergency generator set. Engineered by the Cummins Center of Excellence for the demands of offshore applications, the QSK60 C Power genset is driven by the QSK60 marine auxiliary engine with MCRS fuel system. Five Cat Engines to Power World’s First LNG-Hybrid Barge

Caterpillar Marine announced the first shipment of Cat 3500 series marine gas engines from its Lafayette, Indiana manufacturing facility. Five Cat G3516 marine engines were selected to power the Becker Marine Systems subsidiary, Hybrid Port Energy, LNG-Hybrid Barge, the world’s first LNG-powered barge in the Port of Hamburg. The LNG-Hybrid barge will provide clean and efficient shore power to cold ironing cruise ships and serve as a backup power provider for the local Hamburg electric power and heat grid. The G3516 is a spark-ignited, gas engine specially designed to operate in commercial vessel applications. The solution is compliant with the strict Marine Classification Societies requirements, SOLAS and is certified by Bureau Veritas.

Lloyd's Register Committed to Strengthen Position in India

Lloyd's Register, an independent quality and risk assurance firm, highlighted the momentum seen by the company in India. Mark Stokes - Group Communications Director for Lloyd's Register and R.S. Sharma - Chairman shared the overall progress the company has made in India, the advancements in power and energy sectors and the "Water Matters" campaign for water management. Lloyd's Register also underscored its strategy to strengthen its position in the growing Indian power and the energy market. Lloyd's Register's chairman, R.S. CAT Debuts C175-16 in Germany

On the occasion of SMM 2012, Caterpillar Marine launched new diesel, dual fuel and gas engines. The C175-16 from Caterpillar is the first Cat engine with core ACERT Technology, designed and built from the ground up, according to Robert Hallengren, Marine Products Director, Caterpillar Marine Power Systems. It offers maximum performance along with EPA Marine Tier 3 and IMO Tier II emissions compliance with no after treatment, and is positioned to comply with EPA Tier 4 and IMO Tier III rules.

Two 171 MW Floating Power Plants for Venezuela

Waller Marine, Inc of Houston, Texas will soon launch and christen what will become the world’s largest floating power generation facility when installed at a designated site in Venezuela. The two power barges, which Waller has under construction at the Signal International Shipyard in Orange, Texas, will be transferred from their land based construction locations to the water during the next few days and christened by Venezuelan dignitaries at a ceremony at the shipyard on August 21.

Pamarine Black Box for Ships

Marine safety equipment supplier Pamarine launched its Blu Veritas Voyage Data Recorder (VDR). Similar to black boxes fitted on the aircraft, the Voyage Data Recorder collects data on board vessels so that it can be examined in the event of a shipping accident. With the launch of the Blu Veritas Voyage Data Recorder, the company plans to expand its global distribution footprint to Brazil, Greece, Norway, Korea and Australia. The Blu Veritas VDR is designed in accordance to the requirements specified in IMO A.861 (20), and fully complies with standards as outlined under IEC 61996, IEC 60945 and IEC 61996-2. 1. An optional removable memory stick to facilitate data archiving and retrieval.

Wärtsilä has decided to cooperate with MTS within the marine e-business market and has through the MTS infrastructure integrated its Spares Online service. Spares Online gives ship owners/operators full control of their parts ordering and delivery process directly in their existing purchasing system. Spares Online keeps track of all ship owners / operators installations and provides an updated view of the equipment installed in their plant. GE Transportation's marine gas turbine business has launched a program to obtain American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) certification, to the Steel Vessel and the new Naval Vessel Rules, for its LM6000 aeroderivative gas turbine. GE plans to certify the LM6000 at a power level greater than 36 MW based on U.S. Navy standard day conditions (100oF).

Marubeni and Teekay Join Sea NG in Global Alliance

Sea NG Corporation said that Marubeni Corporation and Teekay Shipping Corporation have formed an alliance with Sea NG for the worldwide commercial deployment of Sea NG's Coselle system for transporting compressed natural gas (CNG) by ship. The Coselle ship is the only marine vessel fully approved by any international marine classification society for the carriage of CNG. Coselle ships will transport moderate volumes of natural gas (30 to 700 mmscf/d) over medium distances (200 to 1500 miles). Coselle(TM) CNG will economically and reliably serve the segment of the market that cannot effectively be supplied by pipelines or liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Cat Delivers 3412C Marine Genset as a Complete MCS-Certified Package

The 3412C marine genset from Caterpillar Marine Power Systems now arrives at shipyards as a complete MCS-certified package. Vessel builders receive the ready-to-install genset as a complete package to be installed as a single component on-board in a simple “plug and play” fashion. Caterpillar provides Marine Classification Society (MCS) certification direct from its factories. Vessel builders are assured a familiar genset electrical interface that is well documented in advance, allowing the shipyard to plan the installation and be prepared for simple on-board wiring configurations. In addition, the genset arrives complete with a functionally tested alarm and protection system.
