Berkshire Hathaway Launches Marine Insurance Products in France

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has launched a full line of marine insurance products in France and appointed Muriel Birre Julvécourt as Head of Marine. The company said that the new marine offerings included Inland Marine, Ocean Cargo, Stock & Transit, Project Cargo, Freight Forwarders Liability, Ports & Terminals, and Subsea Insurance.Muriel Birre Julvécourtcomes to BHSI with more than 25 years of marine underwriting experience. She was most recently Head of Marine at RSA Group. Before that, she held various management roles in Marine at Groupama Transport.

ICS Names Cresswell Marine Committee Chairman

The Board of Directors of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has appointed Martin Cresswell, Technical Director of the Hong Kong Shipowners Association, as the new Chairman of the ICS Marine Committee. BIMCO: Assisting with EEDI Implications

At its recent 22nd meeting BIMCOs Marine Committee discussed the implications of the recently adopted amendments to MARPOL Annex VI which imposes an Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) to new ships built after 1st January 2013. BIMCO was very satisfied to see IMO adopting technical and operational measures to reduce GHG emissions from ships at the 62nd session of its Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) in July 2011. Ed Waryas, Vice President & Marine Development Manager for Lloyd’s Register North America, Inc. has received the Lauren S. McCready Award for 2009. This award is presented annually by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Association for “Outstanding Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering Contributions to the Maritime Industry.”  The award recognizes alumni who are members of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) and who have made significant technical achievements possible. It is named for Rear Admiral Lauren S.

Blue Ribbon Report: Ferries are safe

For a decade if not longer, it's been the subject of debate among reporters, passengers, WSF crews, maritime experts and others. Now, at last, it appears the question has been answered. After a year-long study, the Blue Ribbon Panel on Ferry Safety has presented the Transportation Commission with a list of findings and recommendations dealing with a variety of safety-related issues. The results are expected to impact the way ferry system managers, staff and crew conduct business for years to come. The consultants were asked to assess the adequacy of passenger and crew safety in the ferry system, perform an evaluation of the level of risk present in the ferry system, and prepare recommendations to improve safety.

Birth of the U.S. Navy

By RP3 Bryan J. The U.S. Navy was born on 13 October 1775 by an act of the Continental Congress. Long-building political tensions between the British Empire and its American colonies had broken out into armed conflict. Peace and reconciliation efforts were failing. If the colonies were going to win their independence, they would need a Navy. 1775 was a tumultuous year for the British Empire and its American colonies. Political conflict became military conflict in April when colonists and British soldiers clashed at the Massachusetts towns of Lexington and Concord. Two months later, colonists and British soldiers clashed again; this time they fought on the outskirts of Boston on Bunker Hill with far greater casualties.
