Glosten Tapped to Design Scripps' New Hydrogen-hybrid Research Vessel

UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography today announced that naval architecture and marine engineering company Glosten has been selected as the naval architect for the university’s new California coastal research vessel. Partners Set Out to Develop CO2 Carrier Designs

A team of maritime industry partners has set out to develop new liquefied CO2 carrier designs as carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects advance globally in support of net negative ambitions.“CCS has the potential to make a significant contribution to global emissions reduction strategies and safe and efficient transport of liquefied carbon is going to be key to realizing these goals," said Patrick Janssens, vice president for global gas at ABS, which has embarked on a joint development project (JDP) alongside Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co., Ltd.

DEME Bags Its Largest Ever Dredging Deal

The Belgian dredging and offshore installation firm DEME said Friday it had secured its largest ever dredging and land reclamation contract.The contract is for work for the Abu Qir port project in Egypt. Foreship Appoints Sward to Head US Operations

Naval architecture and marine engineering company Foreship Ltd has appointed Benjamin Sward as President of Foreship LLC to take responsibility for the company’s U.S. activities. Based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Sward will also oversee Foreship’s Seattle operation.The appointment sees a return to Foreship for Sward, who served the company as a Naval Architect and Project Manager between 2015-2018 and led a variety of upgrade projects for high-profile cruise clients such as Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises.

CWind Expands Offshore Vessel Fleet

Vard to Design LNG Bunker Barge for Fincantieri

Vard Marine, a naval architecture and marine engineering company, recently completed the concept design of a new 5,400 cubic meter (CBM) LNG bunker barge for Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding.The barge is being designed for Polaris New Energy’s bunkering operations that will support LNG fueled ships in the east coast of the United States. It will be built at Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin and is expected to be delivered in November 2021.Vard Marine is currently developing a classification design package for the review and approval by the American Bureau of Shipping and the United States Coast Guard.The barge is designed with a philosophy of utilizing proven technology.

Knud E. Hansen Intros New RoPax Design

Danish naval architectural consultancy Knud E. Hansen has released its newest design, a 154-meter RoPax ferry that can transport up to 1,500 passengers and 440 cars.The vessel also offers an additional 657 lane meters for trucks and trailers, said the marine engineering company.The vessel has a service speed of 25 knots and can operate close to optimum engine load even at slow speeds due to its diesel electric propulsion plant and azimuthing pods. The four engines have a combined power of approximately 48 Megawatts and are fueled by marine diesel oil (MDO). There are also two tunnel thrusters located at the bow which, combined with the azipods, allow the vessel to move laterally without any forward or aft motion, a very desirable feature for mooring.

Boskalis Floating Dock to Fix Carnival Vista

Florida-headquartered Carnival Cruise Line has contracted the Dutch marine engineering company Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. to lift its cruise ship Carnival Vista out of the water onto the world’s largest heavy lift ship, Boka Vanguard, and transport it to Grand Bahama shipyard for a dry docking operation.The operation, the first of its kind in the world, will take place in the coming weeks in Freeport, Bahamas. The BOKA Vanguard is the world’s largest semi-submersible ship uniquely positioned to lift and transport extremely heavy cargoes in a dry and safe manner.Carnival Vista is the second largest cruise ship in the Carnival fleet with a capacity of nearly 4,000 passengers and a length in excess of 300 meters.

Philly Shipyard, Vard Marine Win CHAMP Gig

Philly Shipyard (PSI), the U.S. commercial shipyard constructing vessels for operation in the Jones Act market, and the naval architecture and marine engineering company Vard Marine announced that their bid to conduct industry studies for the Common Hull Auxiliary Multi-Mission Platform (CHAMP) program has been selected by the U.S. Navy.The CHAMP program is a multi-phase effort that involves design studies, preliminary design, and detail design and construction (DD&C) to ultimately replace the Military Sealift Command (MSC) fleet of aging ships, which provide transport of supplies and critical support to U.S. forces abroad.CHAMP could affordably recapitalize the current fleet with significant decreases in cost both in ship construction and life-cycle maintenance cost.

GTA Names Sixth LNG-Fueled Tanker

Marine engineering company FKAB said that the sixth vessel ordered by the Gothia Tanker Alliance (GTA), a network of established tanker operators,  has been named at the Avic Dingheng shipyard.The 'Ramelia' is the sixth in a series of vessels ordered for the Gothia Tanker Alliance series.The Ramelia, which is owned by Rederi AB Älvtank, is an ice class 1A environmental friendly tanker, equipped with batteries and dual-fuel engines for LNG operation.It is of 16,300 DWT on design draught & 18,000 DWT on scantling draught, said a press release.This vessel concept is named FKAB T24C1 and was developed by FKAB together with the owner Furetank.Through our FKAB offices in Sweden & China…

Jensen Maritime Provides Design for Shaver's New Tugboat

Jensen Maritime, Crowley Maritime Corp.’s Seattle-based naval architecture and marine engineering company, has provided the detailed design for Shaver Transportation Company’s new, Z-drive tug – Samantha S. The multi-purpose tug was built at Diversified Marine Inc., in Portland, Ore., and is operating along the West Coast. The tug is ABS-classed and carries a FFV1 firefighting notation.The 112-foot by 44-foot tug has a 22-foot draft, was built for escort, ocean towing and ship assist, and has firefighting capabilities if needed. The tug features a raised pilot house and a squared forward end.

Jensen Maritime Designs New Tier IV Tractor Tugs for Foss

Jensen Maritime, Crowley Maritime Corp.’s Seattle-based naval architecture and marine engineering company, has provided the detailed design for an initial four, with an option for six additional, Tier IV tractor tugboats being built by Nichols Brother Boat Builders for Foss Maritime.The 90-short ton bollard pull tugs are based on Jensen’s popular Valor tugboat design, of which 9 have been successfully built and deployed to date and an additional five remain under design/construction. Port Autonome de Papeete Orders Tug for Tahiti

Damen Shipyards said it has won an open tender for the supply of a tug to Port Autonome de Papeete on the Pacific island of Tahiti. Tahiti is part of French Polynesia, an overseas territory of the French Republic. Construction Milestone for RRS Sir David Attenborough

The stern section of Britain’s new polar research ship, RRS Sir David Attenborough, will be transported by barge this week from Hebburn-based shipyard A&P Tyne (Newcastle), part of A&P Group, to the Cammell Laird’s shipyard in Birkenhead. The new ship is a major U.K. Government investment in frontier science. Commissioned by NERC, and built by the world famous marine engineering company Cammell Laird Shiprepairers & Shipbuilders Ltd. The vessel is a Rolls-Royce design, and will be operated by British Antarctic Survey when the ship enters service in 2019.

Guangzhou Shipyard Bags Order for Seven Tankers from Cosco Shipping

Cosco  Shipping Energy Transportation (CSET) has placed an order for seven more ships at compatriot Guangzhou Shipyard International Company Limited (GSI), owned by CSSC Offshore & Marine Engineering Company Limited. The order will include two 64,900 dwt crude oil tankers, two 109,900 dwt LR2 vessels and three 114,000 dwt crude tankers, totaling in an investment worth approximately USD 323 million (RMB 2.14 billion.). Expected delivery dates for the two 64,900 dwt panamax crude tankers are on or before 29 February 2020 and 31 May 2020, respectively. The two 109,900 dwt LR2/Aframax clean products/crude oil carriers of 109,900 dead have expected delivery dates of on or before 31 October 2020 and 31 January 2021, respectively.
