Maine Maritime Academy’s Board of Trustees announced that Jerald S. “Jerry” Paul has been named as the college’s 15th President. Paul, current President of Capitol Access and a 1989 graduate of the institution, will take office this spring.Paul will succeed President William J. Brennan, who steps down from the position at the end of April following 12 years of transformative leadership at MMA. “I am gratified that the Board has selected such a fine individual to lead this wonderful college when I step down next spring,” says President Brennan.

Crowley Maritime Corp. awarded Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarships to four California State University Maritime Academy (CMA) cadets at the Containerization and Intermodal Institute’s Connie Awards last night in Long Beach, Calif.The recipients earned the scholarships based on their academic achievement, financial need and their interest in pursuing careers at sea.Spencer Hoffman, a third-year student from Loomis, Calif., is currently a junior studying marine transportation. He serves as a cadet ambassador for the academy.

AMOT has announced Gustavo Garza as the new Americas regions sales manager for the marine market. Gustavo obtained his bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering Technology from Texas A&M University at Galveston. Post-graduation, Gustavo expanded his product knowledge working in the marine, industrial distribution, and oil & gas industries while owning his own real estate investment company. Before joining AMOT, Gustavo shared his passion for sales and engineering at Cummins Southern Plains, Atlas Industrial Supply, and FMC Technologies.

Crowley Maritime Corp. presented four California Maritime Academy (CMA) students with Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarships during last night’s Containerization and Intermodal Institute’s Connie Awards dinner in Long Beach, Calif. Crowley’s Jenny Terpenning, recruiter, marine personnel, presented the awards to recipients, Christiana Harrell, Bonnie Claire Muchnick, Taylor Sullivan and Alex Yorkman. The scholarships help to further educational opportunities for the students who were chosen based on their academic performance, financial need and interest in pursuing a career at sea after graduation. Christiana Harrell, a sophomore from Big Bear City, Calif., is pursuing a degree in marine transportation with a minor in marine science. She plans to sail after graduation.

Wärtsilä has donated an 8-cylinder Wärtsilä 20 engine and generating set, to the Marine Engineering Technology Department at Texas A&M University at Galveston. The donation represents a continuation of Wärtsilä's ongoing industry support programme aimed at helping future maritime sector leaders to acquire detailed understanding of marine technologies. The donation includes specialty tools and will provide students with valuable hands-on experience for expanding their knowledge of engine repairs, emissions and fuel economy. In addition to the equipment, Wärtsilä will also offer engine training to the Texas A&M Galveston engineering professors through the Wärtsilä Land and Sea Academy based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The scholarships were presented to cadets Andrew Leonard, Griffin Sims, Bonnie Claire Muchnick and Alex Yonkman by Crowley’s manager for marine development and compliance, Vicky Ellis, at Tuesday’s Containerization & Intermodal Institute’s Connie Awards Dinner in Long Beach, Calif. “Crowley is proud to support the education of these cadets and future leaders in the U.S. maritime industry,” Ellis said. Sea trials, training and scholarship program designed to educate students on clean air technologies. Tenneco, a global supplier of Clean Air aftertreatment technologies is helping engineering midshipmen at the Texas A&M Maritime Academy learn firsthand how advanced aftertreatment technology can help diesel engines meet new emissions regulations while efficiently and effectively powering the ships of the future. Midshipmen received hands-on experience this summer with Tenneco’s latest large engine selective catalytic reduction (SCR) diesel aftertreatment technology on the TS General Rudder, which is operated by the Maritime Academy. The California State University Board of Trustees will begin the search next month for a new president of the California Maritime Academy to succeed  President William B. Eisenhardt, who is retiring after serving as president of the university since 2001. The first meeting of the search committee will be held in an open forum from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, March 7 at the Rizza Auditorium on the Cal Maritime campus, followed by a closed meeting of the committee at 1 p.m. This is the only meeting of the committee that is an open meeting. CSU Trustee Peter Mehas will chair the Trustees’ Committee for the Selection of the President. The other trustee members of the selection committee include Steven Glazer, Bob Linscheid and Henry Mendoza, as well as Trustee Chair Herbert L.

Hundreds of current and future shipbuilders will be trained in Marinette pursuant to a contract signed today by Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC) and Marinette Marine Corporation (MMC). “At Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, we are committed to meeting the marine manufacturing industry’s need for skilled shipbuilding workers,” said Dr. H. Jeffrey Rafn, NWTC president. Through the two-year agreement, NWTC will provide 130,000 hours of training to MMC new hires and incumbent workers. Focusing on electricians, shipfitters, welders, and pipefitters, the training will be provided at the NWTC Marinette campus, MMC facilities, and at the new NWTC North Coast Marine Manufacturing Center which is scheduled to open February 1, 2012, on Main Street in Marinette.

Maine Maritime Academy will honor its best and brightest at a ceremony to be held on the college campus in mid-November. The college will formally recognize student academic success and outstanding faculty at its annual Celebration of Achievement on Thursday, Nov. 11. In total, 24 individuals associated with the college will be recognized for their outstanding accomplishments. The event, an ongoing tradition at the college, consists of several recognition ceremonies that are held jointly each year for the purposes of fostering mutual respect, admiration, and inspiration among all honorees. The ceremonies include the college’s Scheel Scholars and ABS Scholars presentations, and an Excellence in Teaching award.

D.F. International logistics service provider D.F. Young, Inc. has announced the relocation of its headquarters office from New York City to Jersey City, N.J. in the first quarter of 2001. The company is leasing 14,000 sq. ft. at 1 Journal Square in Jersey City, after operating from downtown New York for most of its 97-year history. "When this company was started in 1903, all the shipping companies and banks were located in downtown Manhattan," said Thomas Mosimann, president of D.F. Young. "But the port has moved, and most of the other forwarders have followed it to New Jersey over the last 10 to 15 years. D.F.Young already has its Marine Department located in Port Elizabeth, N.J., as well as offices across the U.S. in Jamaica, N.Y.

The Finnish shipbuilding industry has been in a state of flux for much of 1999 and entering 2000, with the Kvaerner shipbuilding pullout dominating the headlines. But while the search for new owners of the company's yards in Finland has kept the boardrooms busy, the business of pulling in valuable new orders to keep the facilities busy and building top-quality ships has not missed a step. The big and modern shipyards in Helsinki and Turku are world-renowned for the production of high-value, technically advanced ships, and this reputation and accrued expertise will surely remain well after the Kvaerner nameplate comes down. Whereas Kvaerner's exit from shipbuilding has been top news throughout the year, foreign investment and ownership within Finland is hardly a new topic.
