Japan Takes the Lead on Ammonia as Maritime Fuel

NYK Group to Build New Heavy-lift Vessels

NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd., an NYK Group company and the only shipping company that owns and operates heavy-lift ships in Japan, signed a contract with Nanjing Jinling Shipyard Co. Ltd., which is part of the China Merchants Group, to build a pair of heavy-lift vessels. The ships will be equipped with a pair of 400-ton cranes and be able to lift up to 800 tons of heavy cargo. The hold will be about 95 meters in length at its maximum without any bulkheads, i.e., upright walls within the hold.

NBP Orders 2 Heavy Lift Vessels at CSC Jinling

The NYK group company, NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd. (NBP) has signed the contract with Nanjing Jinling Shipyard (CSC Jinling), which is part of the China Merchants Group, to build two next-generation energy-saving heavy-lift vessels.Each vessel will be equipped with two 400-ton cranes; cargo up to 800 tons will be able to be loaded through tandem operation.The  vessel will have one hatch and one hold, and the hold shape will be an open-hatch type, making the vessels very efficient for cargo handling and reducing cargo damage.The on-deck length will be about 110 meters, and the in-hold length will be about 95 meters at a maximum.

Sino-Danish Focus on Energy Efficient Ships

A delegation from the Chinese Ministry of Industry is visiting Denmark as part of the cooperation between the two Administrations. A Danish-Chinese workshop on energy efficient ship design and marine equipment will be held during the three-day visit. The workshop will be attended by the Danish Maritime Authority, the Chinese Ministry of Industry and other Chinese authorities, as well as shipowners, marine equipment manufacturers, the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and Danish Maritime. Director General Andreas Nordseth from the Danish Maritime Authority said: ”Cooperation between the Danish and Chinese authorities is a strong tool that facilitates the exchange of knowledge and experiences.

Hodge to Lead Pirie & Smith’s DP Division

Ship-borne Internet of Things Will Benefit Marine Industry

In 2017, the Danish Maritime Authority will contribute to a pilot project on the development and testing of a system that collects real-time data from various components on board ships. The data flow will be transmitted continuously to shore-based organisations allowing the authorities, shipowners and marine equipment manufacturers to use the information in real-time. The Aalborg-based company GateHouse is behind the pilot project. A number of other companies and the Danish Maritime Authority will contribute to the testing of the new technology. They include shipowners such as Uni-Tankers and other companies such as Logimatic and two major Danish equipment manufacturers.

HHI Inks Local Equipment MOU

Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) announced today it has signed a “Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the Establishment of Industrial Cluster for Localizing Marine Equipment Between Marine Equipment Manufacturing and Supply Companies” at Hotel Hyundai Ulsan. Under the MOU, HHI will join forces with KOMERI, a domestic marine equipment research institute and 25 local marine equipment manufacturers to cooperate in the field of research and planning, product development, verification test, certification and engineer exchanges. Starting with the goal of localizing 18 marine equipment including pressure sensors for marine engines and gas injection valves, the three parties plan to increase production of the equipment that they can produce independently.

Korean Register Opens Green-ship Certification Center

The Korean Register informs it has formally opened the Green-ship Equipment Test Certification Center in Gunsan, Jeonbuk, Korea. This large-scale facility will be operated by KR and has been built with the full support of Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the governments of Gunsan City and Jeolla-buk province. In recent years, KR, an IACS member classification society, has been developing eco-friendly technologies through collaboration on a range of R&D activities with marine equipment manufacturers. The creation of this new international-level facility enables KR to carry out testing and evaluation beyond its routine R&D work and establishes a firm base from which to lead the international standardization of eco-friendly vessels.

Del Mar Signs Agency Agreement with Ciramar

Del Mar Marine Corp. announced it has signed an agency agreement with Ciramar Shipyards allowing the company to promote Ciramar Shipyard´s docking and facilities in Dominican Republic as well as its services globally. The agreement was signed during the event Maritime Week Americas (MWA) held at Riu Hotel in Panama City on May 22, 2014, at the Ciramar Shipyards booth. Del Mar Marine Corp. was established on 1999 in Miami with two overseas branches in Panama (Del Mar Panama SA) and the United Kingdom (Del Mar Europe Ltd.) and represents more than 50 shipyards around the world.

Jastram Named Canadian Agent for Hydrex, Ecospeed

The ice class passenger ferry Lomer-Gouin was coated with Ecospeed on the Isle-aux-Coudres in Québec, Canada.

IMO NOx Emission Requirements on Course for 2016

IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee has reached agreement on the entry into force date of new, stricter requirements for ships’ emission of NOx in emission control areas (NECAs). At the last session of the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee, uncertainty arose about the entry into force of regulations on ships’ NOx emissions. A number of countries, headed by Russia, questioned the technical possibilities of implementing the regulations and, consequently, obtained support for postponing the entry into force until January 1, 2021. Since then, Denmark has been in close cooperation with a number of other countries, including the United States and Japan, in order to retain 2016 as the entry into force year. The efforts made had a great impact on the result of the negotiations.

LNG for the Maritime Sector Closer to Reality

The European Union will support with over €1.2 million from the TEN-T Program a study aimed at identifying and addressing the potential barriers to the construction and operation of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) fueled vessels. The project, which was selected for funding under the 2011 TEN-T Annual Call, will examine the technical requirements, regulations and environmental operation permits that need to be met in order to shift from traditionally fuelled engines to LNG. LNG is rapidly emerging as a cheaper and more environmentally friendly fuel for the maritime sector and its uptake is encouraged by the European Union. Specific aspects related to the manufacturing, conversion, certification and operation phases of a LNG fuelled vessel will be analysed.

Maritime Cabotage Task Force is now American Maritime Partnership

American Maritime Partnership (AMP) is the new name for the Maritime Cabotage Task Force, the largest coalition of maritime interests in the United States, which has been in operation since 1995. The new moniker better reflects the coalition’s focus on the domestic maritime industry’s role in promoting national, homeland, and economic security. To increase awareness of itself in the social media world, AMP has launched a new website (www.americanmaritimepartnership.com), and has new social media applications on Facebook and Twitter. “A strong domestic maritime industry is critical to our national security, makes our homeland more secure, and fosters nearly 500,000 American jobs,” said James Henry, President of the Transportation Institute and Chairman of the Board of Directors of AMP.

ABS Reports Continuing Success, Record Fleet

118-ft. Yacht Designed to Travel to 70 Knots

Three Vericor Power Systems' TF50 marine aeroderivative gas turbines have been selected to power the 118 Wallypower high-speed yacht being built by Intermarine Shipyard, Sarzana, Italy for Wally Yacht. This is Wally Yacht's first foray into high-speed power yachts, and the company's initial application of gas turbines. Wally Yacht, based in Monte Carlo, Monaco, is a world-renowned designer of high-speed sailing and power yachts. The 118-ft. yacht will feature three TF50 gas turbines in a Combined Diesel Or Gas (CODOG) turbine configuration. Two TF50s will be used as side or "wing" engines, with one small auxiliary diesel engine connected to each wing engine. The diesels will provide for very slow maneuvering only.
