Green Maritime Methanol Project Gets a Boost

Shipowners, shipyards, manufacturers and ports have joined forces to investigate the feasibility of methanol as a sustainable alternative transport fuel in the maritime sector.Major shipowners Boskalis, The Royal Netherlands Navy, Van Oord and Wagenborg Shipping will take part in the consortium, together with shipbuilders, Damen Shipyards, Feadship, Royal IHC and major marine engine manufacturers Pon Power and Wärtsilä together with their trade association VIV.Specialized marine equipment suppliers like Marine Service Noord and maritime service providers including C-Job Naval Architects complete the maritime supply chain.Work to study the infrastructure and supply chain for methanol is also addressed by the participation of The Netherlands’ two largest ports…

Rays of Hope Seen for German Marine Equipment Suppliers

Germany’s marine and offshore equipment suppliers will have to continue efforts this year to respond to the continuing weak demand from other countries and growing competition in global shipping markets, says German Engineering Federation (VDMA) who reported a decline in orders in the maritime sector in 2017 as sales slid slightly to €11.1 billion ($12.7 billion). Foreship Establishes Tallinn Subsidiary

Naval architect and marine engineering company Foreship has created a wholly-owned subsidiary located in Tallinn to strengthen ties with shipowners, shipyards and marine equipment suppliers in Estonia, and support the development of locally-based design skills. Foreship OÜ will commence operations on October 1 from its own premises, located in the brand new Öpik building within sight of Tallinn Airport, Lake Ülemiste and Tallinn Old Town. The new company, which is 100 percent held by Helsinki-based Foreship Ltd, will be headed by Estonian national and structural engineer Sven Varushkin. IMO Signs Global Maritime Energy Efficiency Partnerships Project

International Maritime Organization (IMO) the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have signed an agreement to allocate US$2.0 million to a two-year global maritime energy efficiency partnership project, which aims to support increased uptake and implementation of energy-efficiency measures for shipping. The so-called GloMEEP project, formally designated “Transforming the Global Maritime Transport Industry towards a Low Carbon Future through Improved Energy Efficiency”, will focus in particular on building capacity to implement technical and operational measures in developing countries, where shipping is increasingly concentrated.

Market Improving for German Equipment Suppliers

The German Engineering Federation (VDMA) reported a good order situation for German marine and offshore oil and gas equipment suppliers, but the upsurge in incoming orders is not making the sector euphoric. “The boom in world ship newbuilding orders in 2013 gave us strong order growth, particularly from China and Korea. Here our ongoing export commitment in the global market is paying off: Germany remains the leading country for marine equipment suppliers worldwide. At the same time, we registered above average growth in incoming orders in the offshore oil and gas area,” stated Dr. Alexander Nürnberg, Chairman of VDMA Marine and Offshore Equipment Industries, at the association’s press conference held in Hamburg on Wednesday.

New BWM Regs Cometh - Are you ready?

The global market for BWT systems is predicted to grow to over $34 billion through 2020 in response to IMO and USCG-based ballast water discharge regulations (Frost and Sullivan, 2012). BWT systems are now manufactured by dozens of companies around the world, including traditional suppliers of marine equipment, suppliers of municipal water and wastewater treatment equipment, and shipbuilders. As of November 2013, 35 BWT systems have received IMO-type approval from foreign administrations, and 28 of these have been accepted into the AMS program by the USCG.

Dutch Shipbuilding Holds Position in Difficult Market

2012 was a challenging year for the Dutch shipbuilding industry. In general, the industry was able to achieve relatively good results. The various shipbuilding categories however showed a mixed picture. Holland Shipbuilding Association hereby presents you a statistical overview of the Dutch shipbuilding cluster in 2012. Although Dutch shipbuilders had a tough year in 2012, they were generally able to hold their own. Output did suffer though. Deliveries from Dutch shipyards amounted to 95 seagoing vessels – a total of nearly 335,046 CGT with a value in excess of €1 billion.

Greek Shipowners Visit Posidonia 2012

A strong delegation of the Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS) led by Chairman Theodore Veniamis visited the 23rd Posidonia Exhibition today where they met with many decision makers from the global marine community who converged to Athens once again to participate at the world’s biggest shipping trade event. The UGS members visited major exhibitors across the vast four halls of the 60,000 square-metres Metropolitan Expo and met with representatives from Far Eastern, US and European shipbuilders, marine equipment suppliers and classification societies. “This is the best and biggest Posidonia ever with more than 1,800 exhibitors from almost 90 countries.

China Keeps Top Position in Ship Building

In advance of SMM 2012, the leading trade fair for the maritime industries, to be held at the Hamburg Fair site from September 4-7, the duel in international shipbuilding is going into the next round – the Chinese shipyards were just ahead again in 2011. According to the latest survey by Clarkson Research, China delivered a total of 1,177 ships with 67.2 million DWT. The closest competitor was South Korea, which had 531 ships and 53.6 DWT, followed by Japan, in third position (462 ships, 32 million DWT). The three major shipbuilding nations from Asia are prominent exhibitors at SMM 2012, the shipbuilding, machinery & marine technology international trade fair Hamburg, from September 4-7.

VDMA: German Industry Records Upsurge

The VDMA (German Engineering Federation) has noted an upsurge in orders for German marine equipment and offshore suppliers, despite a six percent drop in sales in 2010. “We continue to be successful in world markets and have also found new customers in attractive niches in 2011. SMM Istanbul 2011, Turkish Shipbuilding Subsidies

SMM Istanbul 2011 now has the support of the Turkish Undersecretariat for Maritime Affairs and the Turkish Undersecretariat for Defence Industries (SSM). The second SMM Istanbul is to be held at the modernized and enlarged Lütfi Kirdar Convention & Exhibition Centre (ICEC) from 26 to 28 January next year. At that first event in January 2009, SMM Istanbul attracted more than 4,000 trade visitors from 66 countries, showcasing 150 exhibitors from 30 countries. The high international level achieved right from the start by the first SMM overseas exhibition no doubted owed a lot to the quality standards of the SMM brand, which stands for the world’s leading international shipbuilding industry fair.

Electric Shipping Study, Pose2idon

BMT Defence Services Limited, a subsidiary of BMT Group, is heading a consortium of 30 companies to investigate the commercially effective application of electric ship technology in a $30.3m European Union funded project. The ultimate aim of this study, which will begin in January 2009, is to provide a working guide on how to improve efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of the combined European commercial shipping fleet. The Power Optimised Ship for Environment with Electric Innovative Designs ON board (Pose2idon) project will see BMT Defence Services co-ordinate the activity of the 30 company consortium which includes Converteam Technology Limited, DCNS, DNV, SAM, Sirehna, GICAN, EMEC and BALance.

Cathelco Joint Venture, Brazil

The resurgence of shipbuilding in Brazil has led Cathelco to set up a joint venture with Workship do Brasil, Rio de Janeiro based marine equipment suppliers, which will now be known as Cathelco Brasil. Cathelco, based in the UK, is a manufacturer of marine pipework anti-fouling systems and impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) systems for ships, FPSOs and semi-submersibles. The German marine sector enjoyed 8.4% growth in 2008.

MS&D 2009 Hamburg

The latest surveillance, defence and security equipment is presented by the 60 exhibitors at MS&D 2009, the international conference and exhibition on Maritime Security & Defence (MS&D), to be held at the Hamburg Fair site from 30 September to 2 October 2009. The exhibits include sophisticated optical and acoustic sensors, which have substantially improved the automated monitoring and control technology of security and defence equipment and systems. Thus the exhibiting companies, most of them from the exclusive circle of defence system manufacturers, are contributing to the protection of international shipping. SMM India 2009
