LR First to Certify Small Caribbean Ships

After becoming the first classification society to issue Cargo Ship Safety and Small Commercial Safety Certificates to two Trinidad and Tobago vessels LR was recently authorised by several Caribbean flag administrations to carry out surveys and issue certificates under new codes on their behalf. Code of Safety for Caribbean Cargo Ships (CCSS). This applies to ships of under 500gt. The administrations authorising LR are: The Bahamas, Belize, Cayman Islands, Trinidad & Tobago and St. Kitts & Nevis Code of Safety for Small Commercial Vessels operating in the Caribbean (SCV). This applies to ships  up to 24 metres long. The administrations authorising LR are: The Bahamas, Trinidad & Tobago and St. Kitts & Nevis.

Strainstall Supply Load Pins for Shell Stones Project

Strainstall UK Limited has been selected to work alongside SBM offshore on the prestigious Shell Stones project, which is an ultra-deep Oil and Gas development in the Gulf of Mexico and is currently the deepest production facility in the world at approximately 2,900 meters. The project involves the use of an FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Off loading) which has a forward mounted turret with a disconnectable buoy (Buoyant Turret Mooring or BTM) allowing it to weathervane in normal conditions and disconnect from the FPSO upon the approach of a hurricane so that the FPSO can sail to a safer area. The unique BTM design required six specially designed load pins to measure the forces between the Buoy and the FPSO as they are an integral component of the detachable buoy system…

ABS Grants Energy Management Certifications

ABS announced the certification of several maritime industry leaders for adopting energy management systems. Gaslog LNG Services Ltd., Consolidated Marine Management and Goodwood Ship Management Pte Ltd. are among the first organizations to certify their energy management systems using the ABS Guide for Marine Health, Safety, Quality, Environmental and Energy (HSQEEn) Management. These forward-leaning companies are exceeding maritime industry requirements for energy efficiency and establishing systems that will allow them to manage operations that align with increased environmental awareness. This certification recognizes the addition of energy efficiency to these organization’s existing marine management systems.

Lloyd's Statutory Alert:

12 months until the ILO Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 comes into force. On 20 August, 2012, the Philippines ratified the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), 2006. Thirty members of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), with a total share in the world gross tonnage of ships of more than 33 per cent, have now ratified the Convention. This means that the Convention will come into force on 20 August, 2013. • of 500 gt or over, flying the flag of a member and operating from a port, or between ports, in another country.

Lloyd’s Register Spreads the Word on Maritime Safety

Lloyd’s Register to Collaborate with IDS International

Lloyd’s Register is pleased to announce its collaboration with Initiative Development Services International Ltd (IDS International), a maritime and corporate security specialist based in the UK. The alliance with IDS International will play a key role in Lloyd’s Register’s preparations for attaining recognized security organization (RSO) status under the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code included in the recently adopted amendments to the Safety of Life at Sea Convention (SOLAS). IDS International will help Lloyd’s Register meet the RSO criteria, boosting the organization’s maritime security service capability.

LR Publishes ISPS Practical Pack

Lloyd’s Register has published its ISPS Practical Pack, a guide designed to help owners and operators to meet the requirements of the forthcoming International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code. The pack was developed by Lloyd’s Register in conjunction with maritime security expert IDS International Ltd.
