Dalian to Produce and Sell Kappel Propellers in China

On August 30, 2013 MAN Diesel & Turbo signed an agreement regarding the production of its Kappel propeller portfolio with Dalian Marine Propeller Co., Ltd (DMMP) – part of the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) Group – at its facility in Frederikshavn, Denmark. The deal allows DMMP to produce and sell MAN Alpha Kappel design propellers in China. MAN Diesel & Turbo subsequently announced that DMMP has signed a Kappel design propeller contract with Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry Co.

Germanischer Lloyd Certifies SimulationX

ITI GmbH today announced that for the first time a marine application of the interdisciplinary simulation software SimulationX has passed Germanischer Lloyd’s (GL) type approval certification. The SimulationX software module marine propeller for the calculation of ice impact induced loads on the powertrain was designed and developed by ITI in collaboration with GL in accordance with the specifications laid down by GL, the Finnish-Swedish Maritime Administration and the IACS. The software certification conducted by GL proves the software’s high quality standards and is evidence of ITI’s commitment to safe, reliable and energy efficient ship propulsion systems.

UMC and MPR Join Forces

Worldwide underwater ship maintenance specialists UMC International and Dutch based marine propeller repair specialists Maritime Propeller Repairs (MPR) have signed an agreement to cooperate for workshop and in-water propeller repairs. The agreement was signed in Asperen, The Netherlands on 23rd September 2011, at an open day hosted by MPR. More than 300 visitors attended the event, and all were very enthusiastic about the new joint service. Alan Trevarthen, MD UMC, and Gert Hendriksen, MD MPR, signed the agreement in front of local press and shipping company representatives. Established in 1972, UMC has an extensive network of office locations around the world from where they offer a global underwater engineering vessel support service.

IMarEST President's Lecture Focuses on Failure

Engineering failures in the marine industry certainly cost time and resources to correct and, sadly, sometimes resulting in loss of life. At his President’s Day Lecture, Professor John Carlton FREng, Professor of Marine Engineering, City University London and the 109th President of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST), will retrospectively discuss some of the marine failures that he has encountered, with the aim of teasing out the underlying issues that have contributed to their causes. The President’s Lecture will be held Tuesday 11 October at IET London in Savoy Place, London WC2. Tea will be served from 17.30, the President’s Lecture will begin at 18.00 and a Reception will follow at 19.00.

HydroComp Propeller Design & Analysis Course

HydroComp’s new two-day comprehensive PROPS2010 Bootcamp is an intensive professional development workshop on marine propeller design and analysis. Wärtsilä Acquires Propeller Repair Business

Wärtsilä has signed an agreement to acquire the entire business of the South African company Marine Propeller (Pty) Ltd in Cape Town, South Africa. Marine Propeller (Pty) Ltd is privately-owned and focuses mainly on repairing propellers. A minor part of the business is casting small propellers. This acquisition will expand Wärtsilä's offering in South Africa to include propeller repair. The knowledge, good reputation and customers that Marine Propeller will bring provides a good basis for this. Along with an increase in the marine and power plants businesses, Wärtsilä is looking for further expansion and a broadened services offering in southern Africa.
