Yemen War Risk Could Strangle Sea Trade Routes

With Middle East giants Saudi Arabia and Iran squaring up on opposing sides in the Yemen war, the dangers to vital oil tanker and goods voyages are growing daily. Millions of barrels of oil pass through the Bab el-Mandeb and Strait of Hormuz everyday to Europe, the United States and Asia - waterways which pass along the coasts of Yemen and Iran respectively. Insurance costs for shippers are likely to jump. Last week Iran released Marshall-Islands container ship Maersk Tigris and its crew which were seized in the Strait of  Hormuz. This prompted the United States to send vessels to temporarily accompany U.S. flagged ships through the strait. Iranian patrol boats had shadowed a separate container ship earlier last month.

In October 2013, a fire blazed through Brazil’s Santos port, destroying six warehouses and the 180,000 tons of raw sugar inside Sugar Company Copersucar’s terminal. The fire hit all of the sugar giant’s warehouses at the port and left many exporters holding contracts for sugar with an empty bag. Teekay Tankers Announces New CEO

Teekay Tankers Ltd. announced the appointment of Mr. Kevin J. Mackay as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Teekay Tankers, effective June 20, 2014. Mr. Mackay will join Teekay Tankers from Phillips 66 Corporation (Phillips 66), where he is currently head of the global marine business unit for this industry-leading downstream company. In this role, he is responsible for all aspects of marine transportation, including chartering, operations, demurrage, strategy & freight trading, business improvement and marine risk management. He held a similar role as the General Manager, Commercial Marine at ConocoPhillips from 2009 to 2012 before the formation of Phillips 66. Mr. Mackay started his career working for Neptune Orient Lines in Singapore from 1991 to 1995. He then joined AET Inc.

Suncor Questionaire Integrated for Ship Operators

Heidenreich Innovations LLC announced the completion of a project to integrate Suncor's vetting system with Q88.com's questionnaire system. Ship operators are required to complete the Suncor questionnaire on the Suncor Marine Risk Management System prior to each fixture. The integration will enable the ship operators to populate the responses to the Suncor questionnaire with the vessels' data stored in their Q88.com account.
