The C-Hero Story:

Harken Industrial to manufacture and distribute C-Hero Man Overboard Rescue System.The USCG (SubM) option boats are required to perform a MOB drill for the USCG at the time of COI. In 137.215 (4) a surveyor has to examine systems in support of drills and training to ensure that it operates as intended. In response, the C-Hero MOB system can be an incredibly simple and affordable solution to that challenge. C-Hero founder Shane Smith, worked for more than 30 years as a tug captain performing coastwise towing, pushing barges on the rivers, and ship docking on San Francisco Bay.

Harken Industrial is pleased to announce a manufacturing and distribution agreement for the complete C-Hero Man Overboard Rescue System.The system will be manufactured to ISO 9001standards by Harken Industrial in Pewaukee, Wis., and distributed by C-Hero, a California-based company, in the United States. Harken will sell the system through its industrial products network in the rest of the world.The C-Hero StoryC-Hero founder Shane Smith, a tugboat captain, started his career working with his father in Hawaii during the 1970s doing diving, salvage, bunkering, and ocean towing.

SCI Hosts Industry Conference on Safety

On November 12, 2013, the Seamen’s Church Institute (SCI) and SafeMARINER, LLC will host “Zero Incidents through Training, Competency & Continual Improvement,” an industry conference for key players in inland American maritime transportation. The forum at SCI’s training center in Houston, Texas invites mariners, industry executives and regulators to the table to discuss critical issues surrounding safe transportation on the water. “Various individuals operating from different angles in transportation possess valuable knowledge unique to their roles,” says Captain Stephen Polk, Director of SCI’s Center for Maritime Education. As North America’s largest mariners’ service agency, SCI hosts forums like this one to address concerns facing men and women who work in the industry.

New Course to Reduce Accidents & Costs

With newly released statistics showing marine accidents up on last year and a recent court case, which investigated the deaths of three mariners, resulting in a $461,700 company fine, safety has never been higher on the marine agenda. In response to this, a new training course is being launched to help reduce the number of marine deaths and incidents and save shipping companies millions of pounds in hefty fines and insurance costs.
