There are large numbers of boats and service craft that provide essential services to the sea services, the nation and its partners. The U.S. Navy procures about 100 small boats per year. Some of these boats are based on commercial designs, procured to a Navy developed specification that tailors the requirements to the end user needs. U.S. Navy Awards Contracts for FFG(X) Conceptual Design

The Navy awarded five (5) Conceptual Design (CD) contracts for the Guided Missile Frigate (FFG(X)). The contracts based on these requirements will facilitate maturing multiple designs during the 16 months of the Conceptual Design phase, and will allow the Navy to better understand the cost and capability drivers across the various design options. Furthermore, this will inform the final specifications for a full and open competition with a single source award in FY20 for Detail Design and Construction (DD&C) of the FFG(X). The entrance criteria for the Conceptual Design phase is that offerors must have a parent design that has been demonstrated at sea and must already be paired with a domestic shipyard for potential production, which will reduce the necessary development timeline.

Feeding the ERP Beast: Properly Integrating CAD and ERP

ShipConstructor Software Screenshot

ERP systems are beasts. To be happy, they have to be well fed. Computer Aided Design/Drafting (CAD) systems are a source of the food for Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems since they contain significant information regarding the plans and materials needed to construct a ship. ERP systems are data hungry. They can only be effective at planning purchasing and production as long as the beast is consuming the information that the CAD system provides. In fact, there is a direct link between the success of an ERP system and how well it is fed the information it requires to do its job.
