Finnish provider of auxiliary wind propulsion systems for ships Norsepower has completed a joint project with China’s Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS) for the development of an energy-efficient dual-fuel 300,000 dwt very large crude carrier (VLCC) design.The design has already received an approval in principle (AiP) from classification societies Lloyd’s Register and ABS.Under the agreement, Rotor Sails were implemented in the VLCC design for improving the fuel efficiency and reducing emissions, the engineering company said.The impact of the installation of Norsepower’s Rotor Sail solution, including a review of structural reinforcement and visibility calculation…

Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co. Ltd. (DSIC) has received Approval in Principle (AiP) certificates from classification society DNV GL for a new shuttle tanker and a column stabilized crane unit designs. The certificates were handed over at the Marintec China trade fair in Shanghai. Lu Xiao Hui, Vice President and Chief Technical Officer of DSIC, said, “DSIC and DNV GL have successfully collaborated on joint design development and classification for various ship types and offshore units since the 1980s. With these two latest AiPs, DSIC further enriches our product portfolio to the benefit of our clients. Torgeir Sterri, Regional Manager for Greater China at DNV GL – Maritime, presented the AIP certificates to the shipyard.

The maritime industry has taken a step closer toward ballast free shipping with the award of a new approval in principle (AiP) at Marintec China on Tuesday. GTT and Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co. Ltd (DSIC) received AiP from Lloyd’s Register (LR) for their ballast-free shipping solution, a 30,000m³ B-FREE liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier design, which the developers say could combine environmentally-friendly features, increased efficiency and lower build and operating costs. “While we are still in the initial stage of the project and the design is subject to ongoing change, the initial results are indicating that we will meet our goal of having a ballast-free ship that is equal to, or better than existing conventional designs,” said Ma Yingbin, Vice Chief Engineer, DSIC.

“With fast-paced advances in technology, we are on a journey to autonomous transportation at sea,” said ABS Executive Vice President for Global Marine Dr. Kirsi Tikka, at the 2017 Marintec China conference in Shanghai, China. Tikka, who chaired a panel session on the marine industry’s journey to autonomy, described the benefits that will come during interim phases of the voyage to autonomous shipping. “The transition to the next generation of shipping is fueled by automation, data and connectivity.

The maritime world is in the middle of a period of rapid change, with increasing digitalization, new regulations and shifting markets. Classification societies can help to remove barriers, speed up the process, and assist stakeholders make the most of the new landscape, IACS Chairman Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen said at DNV GL’s press conference at Marintec China today. “One of the major contributions of class in current times of transformation is to bring familiar assurance processes to new and unfamiliar technologies,” said Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, Chairman of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) and CEO DNV GL – Maritime. MAN Diesel & Turbo signed a Technical Cooperation Agreement with the China Classification Society (CCS) on December 1, 2015, during Marintec China 2015. The Agreement provides for the strengthening of the cooperation between the two companies in Intelligent Ship research with regards to data exchange, online monitoring and online service. Global cooperation must remain an absolute priority of European shipping policy. That was the principal message of ECSA’s contribution to the Senior Maritime Forum of Marintec China, the largest maritime event in Asia, which is being held in Shanghai this week. DNV GL presented Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co. Ltd (DSIC) with an Approval in Principle (AiP) certificate for their new DSJ-500 jack-up design for drilling in depths of up to 500 feet. Tor E. Svensen, DNV GL Group Executive Vice President, handed over the certificate to Liu Wenmin, DSIC Deputy Technical Director, at the Marintec China trade fair in Shanghai. “I am very pleased to be able to present this certificate to DSIC, continuing a very productive and longstanding relationship,” said Svensen. “DSIC has been engaged in a continuous process of development, with their 350ft and 400ft designs, and we have been very proud to support them.

DNV GL has presented Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company Limited (DSIC) with an Approval in Principle (AiP) certificate for a new LNG-fuelled very large crude carrier (VLCC) design at the first day of the Marintec China trade fair. The new, innovative design has been found to comply with the Gas Fuelled notation as given in the DNV GL rules for the classification of ships and the recently adopted IGF Code. “This AIP is another step toward the more widespread adoption of LNG as a fuel for shipping,” says Torgeir Sterri, DNV GL Vice President and Regional Manager in Greater China. “The emissions and efficiency benefits of LNG mean it is almost sure to become an important part of the fuel mix over the next few years.

Marintec China exhibition has grown by 14% since its last edition to cover 80,000 sq m with over 2,000 exhibiting companies  from 34 countries  defying the talk of a slowdown in China and its hard-hit shipyards. MAN Diesel & Turbo reaches IMO Tier III milestone for entire four-stroke engine portfolio. At an awards ceremony held on April 15, 2015 at the PrimeServ Academy in Shanghai, MAN Diesel & Turbo SE was awarded approval in principle for its SCR system for the entire medium-speed engine portfolio fulfilling IMO Tier III regulations by the China Classification Society (CCS). Testing took place on an MAN 8L21/31 auxiliary engine with an integrated SCR system but the certificate applies to the entire medium-speed engine portfolio .

The design was developed by the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI) with support from DNV GL. Managing Diriector of W Marine Inc., Nikolaos Triantafyllakis says: “The aim of the company, in line with the wishes of its founder, Yiannis Sarantitis, is to build up a homogeneous fleet of vessels ranging in size between Panamax to post-Panamax.
