Tirrenia Takes Rina High Speed COMFORT
Italian ferry operator Tirrenia has been awarded Rina’s COMFORT class notation for two high speed ferries. The 1,800-passenger 43 knot Scorpio, and the recently built 2,700-passenger 29 knot Bithya, have been recognized by Italian classification society RINA as compliant with COMFORT Class. The certification has been awarded to the two ships following a comprehensive series of tests carried out during normal operations at sea. Scorpio serves the Civitavecchia to Olbia route and Bithya serves the Genova to Porto Torres route. At the end of the tests, the ships have been found compliant with the noise and vibration limits established by RINA to ensure an outstanding level of passenger comfort.
RINA Study Proves LNG Floating Storage Viable
Italian classification society, RINA, has concluded a major study that demonstrates that floating storage terminals for LNG are both feasible and economically viable. The EU-funded study carried out jointly with Fincantieri, shows that an offshore FSRU, (Floating Storage and Regasification Unit) for LNG offers advantages over conventional land-based LNG terminals in particular for environmentally sensitive or congested shore areas. The study was part of the AZURE project, partially financed by the EC under the THERMIE framework, aimed at demonstrating the technical and economic feasibility of a full floating LNG chain. The project investigated the concepts of FPSO, (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) and FSRU for LNG.

Carnival Legend Awarded RINA Green Star
Legend, delivered from Kvaerner Masa yard August 14, 2002, to Carnival Cruise Line. Carnival Legend is also built to RINA class. The 2,124-passenger vessel is a sistership to the already delivered Costa Atlantica (2000), Carnival Spirit (2001), and Carnival Pride (2001). Two more vessels, the Costa Mediterranea (2003), and Carnival Miracle (2004) are due to follow. construction and operation to maximize environmental preservation. Marine Propulsion:Emission-Reduction Test a Success
New emission reduction technology was recently proven in a joint test with Holland America and RINA. The test was conducted aboard Veendam. Pictured is sistership Zaandam. Reduced emissions from diesel engines at sea has become a rallying cry from legislators to ship owners to diesel engine manufacturers to fuel and additive suppliers. Last month a significant milestone in the fight to reduce emissions was achieved, as emission-reduction technology reportedly been tested successfully on Carnival's Holland America (HAL) ship, Veendam. The tests were carried out jointly by Carnival Corporate Shipbuilding, HAL and RINA within a common R&D project. The technology is based on injecting water into fuel to create micro-droplets of emulsified fuel.

Conference Focuses on Fire
Who is in charge when a land-based fire brigade responds to a blaze at sea? What are the fire risks for ships in port and under construction? How can design and technology enhance marine fire protection? Prevention, detection and control on ships and offshore structures will be examined at a new forum in London in March by key personnel including ship owners and managers, ship and harbour masters, safety officers, marine and fire protection engineers, insurance executives and senior fire-fighters. The first International Fire on Ships Conference takes place at the Inmarsat Conference Centre on March 11-12, organised by Lloyd’s List Events and supported by UK body the Chief and Assistant Chief Fire Officers’ Association (CACFOA).
