Flagship Niagara League Announces Partners

Representatives from the Flagship Niagara League were in Toledo on Wednesday to announce two new partnerships --- A new scholarship and training opportunity for cadets at The Maritime Academy of Toledo, and a five-year port agreement with the Put-In-Bay Chamber of Commerce. Around 25 people, including representatives of the Ottawa County Visitor’s Bureau and the Toledo Convention and Visitor’s Bureau attended the press conference held at The Maritime Academy of Toledo. Shawn Waskiewicz, Executive Director, Flagship Niagara League, presented The Maritime Academy of Toledo with a $10,000 check to help launch a $30,000 Scholarship Trainee Cadet Fund for the school.

Education for the next generation, employment for life. A new source of talent emerges for maritime stakeholders everywhere. Primary and secondary maritime schools are sprouting up across the country, inspiring K-12 students to learn about the exciting, yet sometimes obscured domestic waterfront. The goals of these maritime school programs are many and multifaceted, but at the core they motivate and engage students by bringing something new and exciting to the classroom while giving teachers an effective means for capturing the attention of their classes.

Toledo Maritime Academy Hosts Admiral’s Ball Weekend

The Maritime Academy of Toledo Foundation wrapped up a successful Admiral’s Ball Weekend on Saturday, April 12, with the fourth Annual Admiral’s Ball and Charity Auction. More than 130 people attended the event which brought in $22,000 for the educational needs for cadets at the school. The theme for this year’s event was “Chart Their Course for Success With Us”. It was sponsored by The Toledo Blade, Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority, Dickenson Wright PLLC, Genoa Bank, IBEW, Local 8, as well as Ed Conn and Saga Schoffner.

Maritime Academy to Host K-12 Maritime Education Symposium

Renee Marazon, Superintendent, The Maritime Academy of Toledo, announced that the first-ever “K-12 Maritime Education Great Lakes and Inland Waterways Symposium” will be held Friday, April 26, 2013 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Maritime Academy at 803 Water St. in Toledo. The symposium is being held the day before, and in conjunction with, The Maritime Academy’s Third Annual Admiral’s Ball, the school’s annual major fund-raiser. The Admiral’s Ball will be held on Saturday, April 27 from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Fifth-Third Center at One SeaGate in Downtown Toledo.

Toledo Maritime Academy Launches Cruise & BST Training

Cruise Ship Professional Development and STCW Basic Safety Training Begins Monday. Launch Date Set for Two New Job Training Programs

Renee Marazon, CEO, The Maritime Academy of Toledo Foundation, said that applications for people interested in the Cruise Ship Professional Development and STCW Basic Safety Training Programs have been sent out, and that a launch date of  January 16, 2012 for the new programs has been set. In November, The Maritime Foundation received a $25,000 grant from First Energy’s Economic Development Fund through City of Toledo Mayor Michael P. Bell’s administration. “Over the past six weeks we received over 100 requests for information about the two new programs,” said Ms. Marazon. “We completed our development of the qualification and application process. We have met with The Source of Lucas  County so they can help recruit potential applicants.

Maritime Foundation Names New Director

Commander Daniel Kleiboemer has been named the Director of The Maritime Foundation and is expected to oversee course development and curriculum for several maritime adult job training programs as well as recertification programs for those already in the maritime industry. MSC to Host Job Fair

Renee Marazon, CEO of The Maritime Academy of Toledo Foundation, said today that The Military Sealift Command will hold a career fair on Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011 from 11 am until 3 pm at the school located at 803 Water St. in Downtown Toledo. The Military Sealift Command will be recruiting for seagoing careers as civilian mariners. “The Military Sealift Command, based in Norfolk, VA,  transports equipment and supplies to U.S. Forces worldwide,” said Ms. Marazon. “MSC is seeking to fill several vacant Civilian Mariner (CIVMAR) positions in the upcoming months. The Maritime Academy of Toledo Foundation Receives $25,000 First Energy Job Training Grant from City of Toledo. Ms. Renee A. AB&B Marketing to Assist Toledo Maritime Academy

AB&B Marketing, a division of AB&B Ergonomics, signed an agreement Tuesday with The Maritime Academy of Toledo Foundation to assist in marketing and organizing two job retraining programs --- Cruise Ship Professional Development and the U.S. Coast Guard approved Basic Safety Training. The agreement was negotiated between Ms. Betty Osenbaugh, president, AB&B Ergonomics, and Ms. Renee Marazon, CEO, The Maritime Academy of Toledo Foundation. The agreement was approved by The Maritime Academy Foundation Board at its meeting Tuesday. The Cruise Ship Professional Development program is aimed at training people for a variety of high-profile positions aboard cruise ships. Meanwhile the Basic Safety Training is a requirement for those working or who wish to pursue a job in the maritime industry.

Need to Educate More People for Maritime Jobs Stressed at Meeting with Community Leaders. Officials with the Maritime Academy of Toledo met with area community leaders Wednesday and stressed that more has to be done to call attention to job opportunities in the maritime industry, ahead of a predicted shortfall by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Representatives from Toledo City Council; the Board of Community Relations for the City of Toledo; and the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority received a briefing from Ms. Renee Marazon, Superintendent of The Maritime Academy of Toledo.

Training Vessel to Make First-ever Stop in Toledo

Officials with The Maritime Academy of Toledo and the Great Lakes Maritime Academy in Traverse City, MI announced this week that the Great Lakes Maritime Academy training vessel, T/S State of Michigan, will make her first-ever visit to Toledo in late May 2012. The announcement was made Monday at the start of Maritime Education Awareness Week at the Maritime Academy of Toledo by Ms. Renee Marazon, Superintendent of the school. Joining in the announcement was Mr. John Berck, Director of Admissions and Captain Mike Surgalski, faculty member, both from the Great Lakes Maritime Academy.

Maritime Foundation to Offer STCW Training

Renee Marazon, CEO of The Maritime Academy of Toledo Foundation, has announced that The Maritime Foundation has been approved by the U.S. Coast Guard to offer Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW training) effective immediately. The STCW training and certification is required for all mariners. The training includes personal survival, personal and social responsibility, basic first aid, and basic firefighting.
