Marlins Approved Test Centres Open in Panama, Ethiopia
Marlins, V.Group’s training business, has approved two new test centres in Panama and Ethiopia. The test centre in Panama is the first Marlins approved test centre in Central America. The centres – E4Seafarers in Panama and Andromeda Marine Surveying and Consultancy PLC in Ethiopia will offer both Marlins UK Maritime and Coast Guard Agency (MCA) approved STCW testing and certification as well as English language testing. IMO has adopted guidelines and applicable IMO Code amendments for the mandatory carriage of damage stability verification instruments onboard new and existing tankers. Amendments to MARPOL Annex I, BCH Code, IBC Code, IGC Code and to the Survey Guidelines under HSSC to mandate the provision of a computer program capable of calculating the applicable damage stability requirements were agreed.
Flag State Performance Table: 'Clean Sheet' for UK
According to the Chamber of Shipping's (ICS) latest Flag State Performance Table, the UK has no negative indicators against any of the 18 criteria ICS uses to assess performance. ABS Type Approval for Hyde Guardian
Hyde Marine, Inc. announced that its Hyde GUARDIAN ballast water treatment system (BWTS) received Type Approval from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) on September 13, 2011. Hyde GUARDIAN was the first BWTS to receive Product Design Assessment (PDA) certification from ABS in April 2010. PDA is the technical approval for equipment and is the first step in receiving ABS Type Approval. Founded in 1862, ABS is a leading international classification society devoted to promoting the security of life, property and the marine environment through the development and verification of standards for the design, construction and operational maintenance of marine-related facilities.
MCA Responds to Vessel Fire
The UK Maritime and Coast Guard Agency (MCA) have responded to a vessel fire off the coast of Ramsgate. Dover Coastguard was informed that the vessel, Sea Riss, had 6 people on board with a fire in its engine room. On board the general cargo vessel are 1770 metric tons of steel products. Ievoil Sun Disaster Reveals No Direct Hit
The U.K. coast guard said on Monday its investigation of the wreck of the Ievoli Sun has so far revealed "no indication of a hit to the bow", one of the possible explanations for the loss of the chemical tanker in the English Channel on October 31. Video footage from a remote operated vehicle is being examined on Monday to ascertain the extent of the damage to the vessel and to quantify the threat of further pollution. "An initial survey...shows creases and superficial damage to the double hull forward of the accommodation block," says the UK Maritime and Coast Guard Agency (MCA). "Superficial damage has been sustained around tank seven, which contains styrene. Number nine tank has been breached, and a small amount of styrene is leaking from there," added a spokesman.

No Injuries in Britain Cruise Ship Fire
According to reports a fire broke out in the engine room of the Calypso and was put out by the crew in about three hours on Saturday. Authorities say no one was hurt in a cruise ship fire in the English Channel. The ship was carrying 462 passengers, virtually all of them Dutch, and a crew of 246. The British Maritime and Coast Guard Agency says search and rescue units were dispatched to the scene off the southern coast of England. Lifeboats and a coastguard helicopter were sent to the stricken liner but crew members had put out the fire in the engine room before they arrived. The ship was heading for the port of St. Peter on the island of Guernsey at the time of the fire. The maritime agency says the ship will be towed to Southampton because of damage to the engines.
