Marlink Upgrades SkyFile Messaging Portfolio

Maritime VSAT Resource Launched at Nor-Shipping

A new online resource providing in-depth, impartial information and advice on maritime VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) technology has been officially launched at Nor-Shipping 2015. maritimeVSAT.com is based on an initiative led by maritime communication services provider Marlink and supported by major industry organizations. Its purpose is to educate the wider maritime industry on all aspects of maritime VSAT by providing a detailed knowledge base and clear understanding of the technology available, thus helping ship-owners to make an informed choice when upgrading vessel and fleet communications. BOW Completes FBB Testing

Blue Ocean Wireless (BOW), a company delivering GSM communication capability for the merchant maritime sector, has completed full FleetBroadband (“FBB”) testing. The FBB service is now fully operational and commercially available to existing and potential BOW customers. This system was designed to allow officers and crew to make and receive voice calls, send and receive text messages and emails and access the internet. BOW also announces that Smart Communications, Inc., a wholly owned mobile subsidiary of the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company, NTT DOCOMO, Inc., and Altobridge Limited will invest a further $7.5 million into BOW to accelerate the rapid introduction of FleetBroadband and next generation maritime communication services.

Harris, CSnet to Develop Ocean Observing Systems

Maritime Communication Services (MCS), Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS) , has signed a strategic agreement with CSnet International to collaborate on the marketing, design, development and operation of ocean observing systems. The systems will be used for exploration of energy resources, monitoring of pipelines and reservoirs, marine science, warning of seismic events, and monitoring of infrastructure security. CSnet's Offshore Communications Backbone (OCB) consists of a network of power and fiber optic cables and sensor ports connected to a surface communications buoy. The communications backbone provides global users with a pre-engineered, expandable system that can be deployed - and redeployed - anywhere in water depths of up to 3,000 meters.
