Cavotec Bags $5 Million Shore Power Order

Cavotec announced it has signed an order for shore power with a global shipping company, valued at about $5 million.The order from an undisclosed global shipping company includes a substantial number of PowerFit shore power units, enabling vessels to connect to shore power with ease while docked. Deliveries are scheduled later this year,Cavotec said.Cavotec’s PowerFit is a complete containerized solution for high voltage vessel connections. By facilitating shore power connections

Kraken Robotics Delivers Minehunting Systems to Royal Danish Navy

Canadian company Kraken Robotics has completed deliveries and sea acceptance tests of all systems for its minehunting sonar equipment under the contract with Royal Danish Navy.The contract was signed in September 2020, following a competitive bidding process. Under the contract with the Danish Ministry of Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization (DALO), Kraken has delivered four complete turnkey minehunting systems.Each system consists of a KATFISH towed Synthetic Aperture Sonar

BIO-UV to Deliver Ballast Water Treatment System for Drillship Pair

BIO-UV Group said Thursday it had received a major order to supply its BIO-SEA ballast water treatment system to a pair of drillships scheduled to enter an undisclosed operator’s offshore drilling rig fleet.According to BIO-UV, a modular version from the BIO-SEA B-Series, combining mechanical  filtration and UV disinfection, has been ordered by a United Arab Emirates-based offshore drilling contractor, a returning customer for BIO-UV Group, and will be installed on the vessels

Cavotec Wins €6.65 Million Shore Power Order

Cavotec reports it has signed a contract with one of the world’s largest shipping lines to supply shore power equipment for newbuild containerships.The €6.65 million order is for Cavotec’s PowerFit units, which are complete containerized solutions for the high-voltage connection of vessels to shore power. Deliveries will take place between late 2023 and early 2025.Patrick Mares, president of Cavotec's ports and maritime division, said, “We're very pleased to receive this repeat order which is based on our successful cooperation with the customer over the last few years.

BIO-SEA BWTS Ordered for Cruise Ship Quest

French UV-C water treatment specialist BIO-UV Group said it has received an order to supply a low-flow BIO-SEA L-Series ballast water treatment system (BWTS) for retrofit installation to the 1,268 GT expedition vessel Quest.The 49-meter-long, 60-passenger capacity vessel is the fifth passenger ship operating under Cruise Management International [CMI] to have specified a BWTS from BIO-SEA by BIO-UV Group partner TECO2030.Maxime Dedeurwaerder, business unit director, BIO-UV Group’s maritime division

Fire-stricken Venezuelan Oil Tanker Undergoes Repairs in Cuba

An oil tanker owned by Venezuelan state oil company Petroleos de Venezuela's maritime division is undergoing repairs in Cuba after suffering a fire while discharging last week, four people familiar with the matter said this week.The Aframax-sized vessel Teseo had set sail from Venezuela's Cardon port with about 500,000 barrels of fuel oil for power generation on October 20, destined for Cuba's Felton port, according to an internal PDVSA document and Refinitiv Eikon ship tracking data.The fire started in the Panama-flagged tanker's engine room and was attributable to lack of proper maintenance by cash-strapped PDVSA, two of the people said.

Pandemic Forces Ship Owners to Shelve Scrubber Installs

Ship owners are postponing or canceling the installation of “scrubbers” that extract harmful sulphur emissions from their vessels as the coronavirus pandemic tightens finances.Regulations from United Nations agency the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which took effect in January, were viewed by the oil and shipping industries as one of the first worldwide efforts to enforce environmental change.The rules aimed to make ships use fuel with a sulphur content of 0.5%, compared with 3.5% previously. Operators had the alternative option to install devices - scrubbers - to strip out the pollutant, which causes lung problems among humans and contributes to acidification of oceans and acid rain

Trafigura to Build U.S. Deep-Water Oil Port

Swiss commodities trader Trafigura has applied to build a deep-water port in Corpus Christi, Texas, on the Gulf of Mexico, which will be able to load supertankers, reports FT.The report said that the plan would see the commodity house build an offshore deepwater port facility  with a view to accommodate very large crude carriers (VLCC) capable of carrying more than 2m barrels of crude. It requires approval from the US Department of Transportation’s maritime division.According to a Reuters report, United States began exporting crude oil in 2016 after the ban on exports was lifted but while its production and therefore exports keep hitting new highs

Fisherman Rescued East of East Caicos Island

The Coast Guard, a good Samaritan and Turks and Caicos Police Maritime Division rescued an overdue fisherman Tuesday approximately 100 yards off the eastern shore of East Caicos Island. Rescued was Timothy Hamilton, 65, of Cockburn Harbor, South Caicos Island. Hamilton was reported overdue to the Turks and Caicos Police Maritime Division Monday, who requested the Coast Guard’s assistance at approximately midnight. Hamilton departed Cockburn Harbor at 7 a.m. Monday and was expected back later in the evening. A Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew, deployed to Great Inagua, Bahamas, launched Tuesday morning to search for Hamilton and located him 100 yard from shore near East Caicos Island at anchor waving his arms at 8:46 a.m.

It’s Electric: Charging Asia’s First E-ferry

Innovative charging technologies connect Asia’s first e-ferry to electrical power, eliminating emissions and dramatically reducing operating costs. The retrofitted passenger ferry, which operates between the island of Cijian and the port of Kaohsiung in Taiwan and that entered service last year, is fully electrically powered. This follows the introduction of a hybrid ferry earlier in 2017. The charging solution was supplied by Swiss based engineering firm Cavotec, who said the technology ensures safe, fast and efficient connection of the ferry to electrical power at the Kaohsiung berth.

Liebherr Bolsters Its Australia Maritime Business

World’s First Shipboard Go-kart Track

The world’s first full-scale shipboard racetrack is now on the water, in a project which has brought the best out of German karting technology specialist RiMO Supply and Dutch decking specialist Bolidt for owner Norwegian Cruise Line. The 326m long, 167,800 gt Norwegian Joy entered the water at Germany’s Meyer Werft in March, offering a glimpse of surface from Bolidt that has been extensively used for road works, car parks and bridges, but which has never before been requested for go-karting afloat.

Denel, tkMS to Partner on Naval Ship Upgrades

As Denel gets ready to revive the Naval Dockyard facilities in Simonstown, the company is collaborating with thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (tkMS) for joint support of the South African Navy frigates and submarines. Denel, which is a global supplier of defense products and solutions, and tkMS signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on board the SAS Amatola, in Rostock, Germany. The cooperation is based on the recognition of the critical importance of the operational availability of the South African Navy Fleet at all times. Denel’s Maritime division will take responsibility for maintenance and upgrades on three Heroine Class submarines (SAS Manthatisi, SAS Charlotte Maxeke and SAS Queen Modjadji) and four Valour Class Frigates (SAS Amatola, SAS Isandlwana, SAS Spioenkop and SAS Mendi).

Cammell Laird: Polar Ship Contract to Kick-start Exports

British shipyard and engineering company Cammell Laird said it plans to unleash an “aggressive exports drive” in 2017 after one of its busiest years for commercial marine work, which saw it land the biggest shipbuilding project in the U.K. for a generation. Cammell Laird CEO John Syvret said the winning of the £150 million contract to build the Sir David Attenborough polar research vessel for the U.K. Government “threw open” a new global market to build a range of high value polar vessels from research to cruise ships.
