On New Year’s Eve, 2008, the US Coast Guard issued its long-awaited regulations regarding salvage and marine firefighting. While there are various points of criticism, overall the rulemaking is an excellent advance over the current situation of preparing in advance for marine casualties that implicate salvage and firefighting. The owners or operators of a tank vessel that carries or is designed to carry Group I-IV oils as cargo in bulk has until July 1, 2010 to revise its vessel response plan (VRP) and submit it to the Coast Guard for consideration and approval.
U.K. Coastguard Responds to Tug Fire
Yarmouth Coastguard received a radio call from the tug HT Blade, stating they had an engine fire with three crew on board. The Maritime Incident Response Group (MIRG) was activated and Coastguard Rescue teams from Lowestoft, Cromer and Felixstowe were tasked as well as requesting the launch of the Cromer lifeboat to the scene. A Rescue helicopter from RAF Wattisham is transporting the MIRG crew and a cargo vessel 'RMS Riga' is offering assistance in the area.
U.K. Launches Incident Response Group
The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has launched the Maritime Incident Response Group (MIRG). The MIRG comprises 15 Fire and Rescue Service (FRS) teams strategically located around the country, with 50 fire fighters on each team. The personnel have been trained to tackle fires in the marine environment and provided with special equipment that is easily air-transportable. Source: HK Law
