Navico Under New Ownership

Navico is a strong player in the recreational boating sector, claiming a 32% market share and well versed in investing in growth both organically and through acquisition, including a commitment to product development. Navico Acquires MARIS; Expands Portfolio

Navico Holding AS, parent company to the Simrad brand of navigational marine electronics, has reached an agreement to acquire MARIS (Maritime Information Systems A/S) from The Grieg Group. MARIS is a supplier of data solutions to the commercial maritime sector related to navigation, voyage optimization and voyage monitoring. With well more than 10,000 navigation systems delivered, MARIS is a supplier of ECDIS systems globally. The MARIS ECDIS, radar/ARPA overlay to ECDIS, and VDR solutions complement Navico’s Simrad product portfolio, the company said.

The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) explains its role in support of marine safety, pollution, maritime security & vessel monitoring in a new brochure. EMSA operates maritime information systems to support the maritime monitoring activities of the Commission and Member States. • detect oil pollution and vessels through satellite images. EMSA operates the European oil spill and vessel detection service CleanSeaNet. This service analyses satellite radar images to detect possible oil spills on the sea surface. Oil spills appear as dark shapes on the image.

Ove Bråthen strengthens Scandinavian sales team at MARIS

Maritime Information Systems AS, Norway (MARIS) has appointed Ove Bråthen Director, Sales Scandinavia. Mr Bråthen, who holds an electronics degree with focus on radar and underwater acoustics, brings more than 25 years’ international sales experience to the company, having spent the first six years of his career with the Royal Norwegian Navy. After working at sea on a number of seismic research vessels, Mr Bråthen spent the next decade as Sales Manager for Schlumberger Oilfield Services, selling high-tech products to the seismic, offshore and defence industries.

MARIS, Seagull ink New ECDIS Contract

Maritime Information Systems AS (MARIS) has signed an important agreement with Seagull AS covering cooperation on product specific ECDIS training at Seagull’s shore-based training center in Norway. The agreement  between the two Norwegian maritime industry specialists marks the latest initiative by MARIS to develop a standard training package by assimilating information on leading training  centres and approaching those in the ECDIS training business to offer cooperation and market MARIS’ products and services. “Our strategy is to identify crucial safety and environmental issues facing the hazardous cargo sector and develop and publish recommended criteria that will serve as benchmarks for the industry,” said Steinar Gundersen, Deputy Chief Executive (Corporate), MARIS AS.

Ralf Pluch Strengthens MARIS Sales Team

Maritime Information Systems AS, Norway (MARIS) has appointed Ralf Pluch Sales Director for Europe. Austrian-born Mr Pluch joins the company from ExNC Entwicklungs- und Vertriebs GmbH, which he founded to develop and market AIS Class B transponders. Prior to this, he worked as Sales Director with Nauticast GmbH/ ACR Europe, developing an international sales and service network for AIS Class A transponders. During this time, the company gained a market share of 20% in more than 30 countries. In his role at MARIS, Mr Pluch will target sales in the European markets excluding Scandinavia.

Tolani Shipping selects MARIS VDS

Tolani Shipping’s Singapore arm, Tolani Shipping (S) Pte Ltd, has opted to use the Voyage Decision Support system developed by Maritime Information Systems AS, Norway (MARIS). Tolani Shipping owns a fleet of bulk carriers ranging in size from 50,000dwt to 84,000dwt with an average age of five years. With its origins in India, Tolani Shipping established a presence in Singapore in 2003 and operates vessels under both the Indian and Singaporean flags. The MARIS VDS System is an electronic tool based on the MARIS Electronic Chart Display System (ECDIS), designed to plan and execute voyages in a safe manner with optimal fuel and time consumption and also document and analyze the results.

MARIS Supplies ECDIS to Hong Kong Police

Maritime Information Systems AS, Norway (MARIS), a recognised Electronic Navigation specialist, has secured its first contract from the Hong Kong Marine Police. After an official tendering process, the company has been selected to supply 12 ECDIS Systems on board 12 existing patrol boats operating in waters around Hong Kong. MARIS worked with its agent Elekon Electrical Company to make several presentations to the HKMP Department and was selected after meeting all technical requirements. MARIS will provide its latest ECDIS Systems based on its 10th Generation Smartline MK-10 ECDIS 900 Systems with advanced features and latest hardware, including the Intel Core-2 DUO processor, solid state drives, etc.

EU Funds for Maritime Information Systems Project

The EU announces funding for a project to implement a common interoperable Information and Communications Technology (ICT) platform for the maritime logistic chain in Italy, Spain, Cyprus, Germany and Portugal. The project will receive almost €8 million in co-financing from the TEN-T budget until December 2013 and will contribute to the development of TEN-T Priority Project 21 “Motorways of the Sea”. The objective of the project, which was selected under the 2010 TEN-T Multi-Annual Call, is to design and develop an interoperable ICT platform (the “MIELE Middleware”) able to interface maritime ICT systems (i.e. port community systems and other eMaritime applications) in Italy, Portugal, Spain, Cyprus and Germany (the “National Vertical Pilots”).

Modern Maritime, of Arlington, Va. (MMI), and P and H Marine Associates, supplier of Marine Management System consulting services, Portsmouth, N.H. (P and H), have agreed to terms for a merger of the two companies, effective early March. MARIS Signs Joint Agreement with COSCO/ENS

Maritime Information Systems AS (MARIS) has signed a Joint Development Agreement with COSCO/ENS to produce a range of low cost navigation and marine IT products for the world shipping market. The products, based upon proven MARIS technology, will be sold under both MARIS and COSCO/ENS badge names. China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO) a national flag carrier of the People’s Republic of China, was established in Bejing in 1961 taking international shipping as its main line of business. COSCO has been the world’s fastest growing shipping company over the past decades. MARIS Makes Agreement With Peter Johansen Group

Under the name Royal Denship the Peter Johansen Group is building a series of super luxury yachts for foreign owners. These yachts are being built at several Danish shipyards. The agreement includes deliveries of the following products from MARIS: ARPA2000 Radar/ARPA automatic radar plotting aid, ECDIS900 electronic chart display and information system, VDR2000 voyage data recorder. The yachts are also equipped with LCD screens in all cabins, living areas, and the fly bridge, enabling totally independent access to centrally stored movies and music as well as the super luxury yachts navigational information, communication and security units. The entertainment systems are delivered by Peter Johansen Group A/S.
