UK Navy Rescues Five from Sinking Tug

Five mariners were rescued by the crew of a U.K. Royal Navy patrol ship after their tug started to sink in rough seas last week in the Caribbean.The oceangoing tug began taking on water after suffering an engine failure some 20 miles west of Sint Maarten. The vessel's crew sent out a distress call around 1 p.m. on Friday and took refuge on the large sand barge their vessel had been towing.Patrol ship HMS Medway, the Royal Navy’s permanent presence in the region, was slightly more than a dozen miles away and promptly responded to the Mayday call.

Sri Lanka Allows Fire-hit Tanker New Diamond to Sail to UAE

Sri Lanka has allowed a fire-hit supertanker to sail to the United Arab Emirates, where its oil cargo would be transferred to another ship for further supplies to Indian Oil Corp, officials said.The approval for the ship to leave Sri Lankan waters has been given by the maritime rescue coordination center and it is likely to sail towards the UAE, Captain Indika De Silva said."Two navy ships are shadowing the tanker until it leaves Sri Lanka's 200 mile exclusive economic zone," De Silva added.In early September, the New Diamond caught fire after a blast in its engine room.

Cargo Ship Catches Fire off the Coast of Italy

Twelve crew members were rescued Wednesday from a cargo ship ablaze off the coast of Italy.At about 7 a.m. local time, the Reggio Calabria port authority received a mayday call reporting an uncontrollable fire in the engine room aboard Bolivian-flagged freighter Bellatrix, in the Mediterranean Sea, about 180 miles southeast from Catania, Italy's Coast Guard said. The Coast Guard assumed coordination of the rescue effort and arranged for multiple air and surface assets to be sent to the scene.

SAR Traning for African Women

Training for African women working in search and rescue (SAR) operations underwent at the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center in Rabat, Morocco (13-15 November).Thirteen officials from developing countries and Small Island Developing States took part in the first regional training course of this kind. The participating states were Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Mozambique, Nigeria, Republic of the Congo, Senegal, Seychelles and South Africa.The course included a practical exercise on a rescue boat and provided a platform to discuss how to improve and enhance the knowledge of African women working in SAR and to provide them with appropriate tools to manage SAR missions.International Maritime Organization (IMO)…

Bulk Carrier Rescues Yachtsman

Frontier Jacaranda, a bulk carrier operated by NYK Bulkship (Atlantic) NV., rescued a distressed yachtsman on January 18 (local time) in the North Atlantic.While Frontier Jacaranda was navigating for Rotterdam, Netherlands, the vessel received a call from the UK’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Center. The ship immediately headed to the instructed area and rescued a British yachtsman. The U.S. Coast Guard response continues to the grounding of the 308-foot Chinese-flagged commercial fishing carrier Ou Ya Leng No. 6 on Taka Atoll in the Marshall Islands, Wednesday.A Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules crew arrived and made contact with the mariners who remain aboard the vessel and are awaiting rescue.Initial reports from MRCC China stated the crew abandoned ship and were on the atoll, but upon arrival, the Hercules crew confirmed they are aboard the vessel and using emergency generator power.

Tanker Rescues 28 Fishermen off Colombia

A product tanker operated by the NYK Group rescued 28 fishermen from life rafts on last week off the coast of Colombia.The Challenge Pollux was sailing from the Panama Canal to Houston on September 14 when it received a call from a U.S.-based Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) requesting assistance with the rescue of 28 crew members who had evacuated from a sinking fishing boat.The rescued seafarers were given water, food, clothing and first-aid on board the Challenge Pollux before being transferred to a Colombian Coast Guard vessel.Challenge PolluxCaptain: Birender SinghFlag: Singapor

MOL LNG Carrier Saves Crewmember from Wrecked Fishing Boat

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has announced that on December 16, its operated LNG carrier, the ESSHU MARU, rescued a crewmember from a fishing boat that wrecked in the North Pacific Ocean.   Early in the morning of December 16 (in local time), the ESSHU MARU, while underway in the North Pacific Ocean toward Pyeongtaek, South Korea, via the Panama Canal, received a request for rescue assistance from the United States Maritime Rescue Coordination Center, and rushed to the scene.    At 11:30 on the same day, she safely rescued a crewmember from the wrecked fishing boat. (North latitude 12°59', West longitude 113°17')   At 07:22 on December 22, the vessel handed over the survivor to the United States Coast Guard off Oahu, Hawaii.

Indian Coast Guard Rescues Tanker

On receiving the distress call motor tanker  MV Infinity I around 20 nautical miles from Goa on Wednesday evening, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) salvaged the vessel, its cargo and rescued 14 crew by dispatching ships from Goa. MV Infinity I reported water ingress and continuous listing (nautical term for tilting) to starboard (right side of the ship). The vessel had reported that the list is increasing despite ship's de-watering efforts. Such emergencies can lead to the sinking of the ship. The 83 m long MT Infinity-1 is an oil/asphalt carrier and was on coastal passage from Kandla port in Gujarat to Karwar in Karnataka with a 14-member Indian crew. She was carrying approximately 1750 tonnes of Asphalt. Indian Naval Ship Trikand from Western Naval Command immediately responded to the call.

Fire Aboard US-flagged Car Carrier

A car carrier vessel has suffered a fire on one of its decks, approximately 40 miles off Harwich, the U.K. Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) reported. The U.S. flagged ship, Courage, reported the fire to the U.K. Coastguard at Dover Maritime Rescue Coordination Center just before 10 p.m., June 2. Using an inbuilt CO2 system to, crew members flooded a large area to put the fire out and continued their journey. The situation is currently contained. A Dover Coastguard RAF Wattisham helicopter was on standby, but was not needed. The vessel is now coming to Southampton where it is being monitored by the National Maritime Operations Center, MCA said.

MOL Car Carrier Rescues Drifting Fishermen

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. today announced that on Sunday, February 1, 2015, the MOL-operated car carrier Astral Ace found drifting castaways near Malay Peninsula in the South China Sea, and was able to safely rescue two Malaysian and three Indonesian fishermen.  At 11:25 (all times were in local time) on February 1, 2015, the Astral Ace, sailing from the port of Singapore, to Laem Chabang Port in Thailand, found drifting fishermen – their fishing boat was half sunk, and immediately began the rescue operations.  At 12:15 of the same day, five drifting fishermen were rescued.  At 16:10 of the same day, the members were turned over to the Malaysian Maritime Rescue Coordination Center.

New RS Class Salvage Ship Delivered

Construction work has been completed on the Spasatel Zaborschikov - the third in a series of multifunctional rescue-salvage ships (project MPSV07) built to RS class. The ship was delivered to the State Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (SMRCC) on June 20, 2014 and is being prepared for transfer to Vladivostok, its port of registry. Construction of the new ship was carried under a state contract for the Russian Federal Agency of Maritime and River Transport and FGI Directorate of State Contracting Authority for Marine Transport Development Programs. The project was developed by Marine Engineering Bureau. RS class notation: КМ Arc 5 AUT1-ICS OMBO FF3WS DYNPOS-2 EPP Salvage ship.

Search and Rescue of Ice-trapped Passenger Vessel Underway

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is coordinating a search and rescue for a Russian passenger ship beset by ice approximately 1,500 nautical miles south of Hobart. AMSA’s Rescue Coordination Centre Australia (RCC Australia) was contacted by the Falmouth Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) in the United Kingdom on Christmas morning. The Falmouth MRCC received a distress message via satellite from a Russian flagged vessel, MV Akademik Shokalskiy, with 74 people about 7:20 a.m. (AEDT). The ship is in the Australian Search and Rescue region, 100 nautical miles east of the French base Dumont D’Urville. RCC Australia assumed coordination of the incident and issued a broadcast to icebreaking vessels in the area.

Vietnam to Prosecute Following Fatal Ship Collision

The crew of Singaporean cargo ship 'Sima Sapphire' which collided a Vietnamese fishing vessel leaving 3 dead and 5 missing will be prosecuted since data from the ship's black box incriminates its crew, according to the Vietnam Government. The Sima Sapphire was on voyage to Malaysia from Ho Chi Minh City when it collided with a Vietnamese fishing vessel from the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang, which was returning to shore with 16 persons onboard. The collision threw all 16 fishermen to the sea, of whom 8 were rescued by the Singaporean ship.

Indian Coastguard Rescues Vessel Crew

The Indian Coastguard rescued and evacuated 25 crewmembers of a Panama merchant vessel near Porbandar. The crewmembers of M.V. Christena-II that had run aground off the Porbandar coast were evacuated on July 28, according to Indo-Asian News Service. The 492 ft.-vessel was laden with 180 tons of marine gas oil and 40 tons of high-speed diesel. It ran aground after main engine failure following rough weather in the Gujarat coast. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Center, Mumbai, and the Maritime Rescue Sub Center, Porbandar, picked up distress signals from the Panamanian vessel. The Porbandar authorities were alerted and a coastguard team brought the crewmembers to the shore. The crew was then handed over to the police for further investigation.
