Keeping a Watchful Eye

In 2014, Forbes Associate Director for Maritime Services at Control Risks stated that maritime risks are on the rise. Mariners and ship owner/operators experienced a 26% spike in maritime piracy and armed robbery since 2014  and the North Sea Oil Industry admitted that it had been targeted and thwarted cyber attacks, attacks that if successful could have caused untold financial and logistical damage. •    Within the last decade, plans to attack a cruise ship in a major U.S. port were revealed. Maritime surveillance systems play a key role monitoring sea lanes and ports while supporting worldwide maritime safety and security. The ability to operate effectively and securely in any environment (air, land or sea) depends on an acute awareness and understanding of the surrounding elements.

WatchStander Nonlethal Antipiracy System Ready for Market

Maritime Security systems company WatchStander LLC announced that it has completed development of a fully automated system designed to prevent gangs of pirates and other unwanted individuals or groups from boarding ships. The object of the system is to make it more physically intolerable for the criminals to approach the ship and to persuade them to abort their attacks. The video and data from all incidents will be archived for subsequent transmission to the data centers of the shipowner and WatchStander for training and evidential purposes.

Port of San Francisco Develops New Physical Security Plan

Embarcadero Systems Corporation (ESC) won a contract to develop physical security plans, security technology and security plan implementation recommendations for the Port of San Francisco’s seven and a half miles of shoreline stretching from Hyde Street Pier in the north to India Basin in the south. Under this five-month contract, the ESC-led team will provide a comprehensive Physical Security Plan suited to protect the unique needs of the Port of San Francisco, recognizing its significant tourist industry and open access to waterfront facilities. The plan will work in collaboration with local, state and federal resources; coordinate with the city’s Emergency Operation Plan; and comply with the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
