Simulators Track our Changing Relationship with Technology

Simulation-based training has its whole-of-ship/whole-of-team scenarios, but zooming in, the industry is now working on more specific targets.We have a close relationship with technology, evidenced by, for example, the phones we are estimated to unlock around 50-80 times a day. It has changed us. Half the people surveyed in a 2022 King’s College London study said that they feel like their attention span is shorter than it used to be. They are wrong, though, if they think that the average attention span of adults today is just eight seconds, one second less than goldfish.

NSB Invests in New Simulator

NSB GROUP will work with Wärtsilä on the technical upgrade of the simulator of its NSBacademy. Since 2007 NSB is training Nautical Officers in its own Maritime Training Center. The retrofit for the technical update began in June and is expected to last three months.The NSBacademy has two ship‐handling simulators with a field of view of 270° and 180° respectively. Anglo-Eastern’s flagship maritime training center in Mumbai recently celebrated the inauguration of its new premises at Leela Business Park in Andheri East. All American Marine Hires Federer as Business Development Manager

Bellingham, Wash. shipbuilder All American Marine (AAM) said it has appointed Terry Federer as business development manager, effective May 10. Federer takes over the role from Ron Wille, who was recently named president and COO.In his new role, Federer will focus on the continued expansion of the aluminum shipbuilder’s presence in the national and international maritime markets. AAM, now part of Bryton Marine Group, builds highspeed passenger boats, hybrid vessels, dinner cruise boats, patrol vessels and research vessels.

Four Charged in Coast Guard Credentialing Scheme

Four individuals have been charged for their roles in a conspiracy to sell phony U.S. Coast Guard merchant mariner credentials in Norfolk, Va., the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia announced Monday.According to allegations in the unsealed indictment, Lamont Godfrey, 42, of Portsmouth, Va.;, Eugene Johnson, 45, of Norfolk; Shunmanique Willis, 43, of Texas; and Alonzo Williams, 45, of Louisiana, acted in concert to create counterfeit certificates from the Mid-Atlantic Maritime Academy (MAMA) and sell them to merchant mariners for a profit.

As tourism increases so will the demand for trained, licensed employees and sea pilots navigating the Inside Passage and a new University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) scholarship endowment was inspired to do just that.The Captain Michael A. Clinkscales Maritime Scholarship has been established to support UAS students enrolled in marine transportation courses. Nigeria Ports in Pact with Port of Antwerp

The Antwerp port community and its various partners are currently on a trade mission to West-Africa, including Benin and Nigeria.A collaboration agreement was signed between Port of Antwerp International (PAI), the consultancy and investment subsidiary of Port of Antwerp, and APEC, its maritime training center, and Nigerian Ports Authority, which manages the 6 ports of Nigeria. Simwave Simulator Center Opens in April

With a range of dignitaries in attendance, Simwave will officially open its 5,000-square-meter maritime training center in Barendrecht on April 19. The three hundred guests will take a look behind the scenes at the new location, which houses more than 50 simulators. The center has already been in use for some time now. The 'site acceptance test' was successfully completed on January 29th, in collaboration with the supplier of the simulators, the Norwegian company Kongsberg Digital.

Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) has announced that the 20,146 TEU containership, MOL Tribute, came into full management of the Hong Kong Ship Management Center on July 10, 2017. Built by Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea, MOL Tribute is 400 meters in length having a deadweight of 196,877 MT, with her sister ship, MOL Tradition, scheduled to enter Hong Kong management at the end of August. Through these milestones, BSM becomes part of a select group of operators that have the expertise to manage some of the world’s largest containerships.

Jakarta, Indonesia-based maritime training center PT Azureus Simulator Asia has chosen KONGSBERG’s Dynamic Positioning (DP) simulators to help it meet significant growth in regional demand for offshore operational training. Due for delivery in June 2017, PT Azureus Simulator Asia is the first Indonesian training center to utilize KONGSBERG DP simulators. Day of the Seafarer Celebrated in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi Ports informs it celebrated the global ‘Day of the Seafarer’ with as many as 1,000 seafarers. The day is observed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on June 25 each year to raise awareness of the vital role played by seafarers. Gifts were distributed by Abu Dhabi Ports employees to mark the day. The gift parcels, which contained commemorative items, were hand-wrapped by Abu Dhabi Ports employees and distributed at all ports. With a focus on building human capital, Abu Dhabi Ports said it has developed several avenues to further maritime education.

Simulation & Ice Navigation Training

In a anticipation of the growing need for deck officers and masters experienced in operating in ice covered waters and as evidenced by the relatively rapid increase in vessel traffic in areas of the Arctic Ocean due to the receding ice coverage, the Alaska’s Institute of Technology (AVTEC) in Seward, Alaska has developed a comprehensive course of instruction in Ice Navigation. This two week course is directed toward masters and mates without or with minimal experience in ice covered waters. The course of instruction is a combination of classroom lectures, case studies and simulation exercises, operating various vessel models in a myriad of ice conditions. TWC Funds Training of 195 Mariners at San Jacinto College

Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) informs that its Chairman, Andres Alcantar, recently visited the San Jacinto College maritime training center to present a $368,173 Skills Development Fund grant for maritime job training. The TWC Skills Development Fund grant will fund training for 195 mariners from Buffalo Marine Services, G&H Towing Co., Higman Barge Lines Inc., and J.A.M. Distributing. Since the start of the San Jacinto College maritime program in 2010, approximately 2,500 U.S. Coast Guard certificates have been awarded to mariners. TWC explains that having a local maritime training center saves companies travel expenses. In the past, mariners were sent out of state for similar training.

San Jacinto College Breaks Ground on New Training Center

San Jacinto College has broken ground along the Port of Houston for its new 45,000-square-foot Maritime Training Center. At the site of 3700 Old Highway 146 in La Porte, stood student Dave Allen, taking in the view of concrete piers that will support San Jacinto College Maritime Training Center, a facility to prepare new mariners and serve as local training site. “This is going to prepare so many people for work in this industry,” said the San Jacinto College maritime student, who is on track for employment with a local maritime company and completes his second internship this year.

Avante Expands VSTEP Simulator
